After returning home from the Navy, Harry went to work for Southwestern Portland Cement Company (CEMEX)in Xenia, OH where he retired after 35 years. He is survived by his wife, Barbara (Adkins) Ashley; three sons, Paul, Phillip, and Shawn; his nephew, Chris Baker; his sister, Dale Woods; sister and brother-in-law, Joe and Thelma (Ashley) Brashier of Hazard, KY and numerous other relatives. "Uncle Bill" Phillips, 92 of Dayton, OH went peacefully to be with his Lord surrounded by loving family and friends on March 4, 2011 at Walnut Creek NH. He was born June 10, 1918 in Blue Diamond, KY and grew up in Stearns, KY. He was preceded in death by his parents Pearl & Caldwell Phillips, loving wife, Charlene Phillips in 2001, sister Pauline Collier, brother Bonell Barth, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law. William is survived by his son & daughter-in-law, Thomas C. & Gloria Phillips of Kettering, OH, granddaughter, Barbara (Phillip) Sowders of Dayton, OH, grandson, Ken (Kim) Phillips of Dayton; great grandchildren: Ashley (Danny) Thieman, Matthew Sowders and Kayleigh Phillips, brother-in-laws, Ken (Adeline) Vahle, and Paul Vahle, sister-in-law, Jean Davis and several nieces & nephews that he loved very much. When he was not serving the Lord you could find him on the golf course or rooting on his favorite team Kentucky Wildcats. Born November 23, 1922 in Blue Diamond, KY, she was the daughter of the late Floyd and Nannie (Collier) Ballard. Helen graduated cum laude from Miami University in 1943. She went on to become an Army Lieutenant during World War II. After leaving the Army she was a dietician at Good Samaritan Hospital in Zanesville, OH and taught nutrition at Muskingum College. She finished her working career in 1983 teaching English Literature at Licking Valley High School near Newark, OH. Helen was an avid reader and enjoyed photography. She was devoted to her family and loved living on the family farm. Helen will be missed by all who have known her. Surviving are her children, Tom (Karla) Gebbie of Centerville, OH, Philip (Julie) Gebbie of Pittsburgh, PA and Richard (Barbara) Gebbie of Galena, OH; three brothers, Cecil Ballard of Asheville, NC, Lee Balla! rd of Scottsdale, AZ and Jerry Ballard of Nashport; five grandchildren, Tom Gebbie, Lori Darrah, Steven Gebbie, David Gebbie and Ian Gebbie; four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Ingram and wife Kathy of Little Leatherwood; daughter Donna Ingram Bowling of Hazard; brothers Charles Boggs and Lawrence Boggs, both of Little Leatherwood, and Larry Colon Boggs of Cornettsville; sisters Margie Sizemore of Jeff and Lois Griffith of Little Leatherwood; grandson Joshua Wade Bowling and wife Holly of Morgantown, West Virginia and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Visitation will be held at the Church of God of Prophecy at Little Leatherwood beginning at 6 p.m. on Thursday, February 24. Services will begin at 1 p.m. on Friday, February 25 with Jeff Sloan and Kevin Collins officiating. Burial will follow in the Arthur Halcomb Cemetery. ******************************************** Geneva Simpson Geneva Simpson, 82, of Hazard, passed away on Wednesday, February 23 at the Hazard ARH medical center. She was retired from HA Spalding Engineers where she was a secretary, treasurer and vice president for 43 years. She was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hazard. The daughter of the late Chester Ross and the late Bertie Ross, she was also preceded in death by her brother, Eugene Ross. She is survived by her husband, Charles Simpson; daughter Sally Spaulding and husband Hank; son Charley Simpson, Jr. and wife Kimberly; sisters Irene Blair and Jeannette New; grandchildren Angela Haney, Carrie Combs, Skyler Fugate and Dan Spaulding along with seven great-grandchildren. Arrangements are being handled by Maggard Mountain View Chapel of Hazard where the family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, February 25. A memorial service will follow with Rev. Ellen Peach officiating. She was the daughter of the late Ira Williams and the late Cindy Joseph Williams, and was also preceded in death by her daughter, Lorene Eversole; son William Eversole and brothers Claude Williams and Willie Williams. She is survived by daughters Brenda Wooton and Shirley Smith and husband Ronnie; sons Ricky Glen Eversole, Marty Williams and Elbert Hardin; sisters Rosa Lee Baker, Melissa Williams and Eva Mae Garrison; brothers Julius Hardin Williams and Reason Williams along with nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was born in Perry County, the son of the late Johnnie Deaton and the late Mimmie Smith Deaton. He was a lifelong resident of Perry County, and was a member of the Perry County DAV Chapter #64. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a farmer by occupation. He was also preceded in death by brothers Bud Deaton and Billie Deaton and sisters Bessie Moore and Thelma Gilbert. He is survived by his brother, Ed Deaton and wife Edna of Buckhorn; sisters Oma Jean Johnson of Buckhorn, Edna Wells and husband Jerry of Hazard and Charlene Amis of Franklin, Ohio along with a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held on Monday, February 21 at the Johnson United Baptist Church at Buckhorn with Gary Riley, Elmo Johnson and Chris Turner officiating. Military rites were conducted by the Perry County DAV Chapter # 64. The burial followed in the Johnson Cemetery at Buckhorn. He is survived by his mother, Christine S. Florence, Ovitt & others.   I am also related to the Couch & Campbells.  The current Couch family is trying to put the old family back together.  We are Couch DNA group # 5 with Bill Couch's genweb site.   We have made much new discovers with the family.  There are 2 groups of Couch's in Group # 5.  The Carolina's group & the Va/Ky group.  The Va/Ky group were never in the Carolinas,  It is our current belief the connection between the two groups may be in England. Cornwald to be exact.   We get together every two years, with new current information. I am attaching a picture of it. The story about Samuel Johnston and Mary Wise may be true, but it is also possible that it came from another tragic story. Samuel's grandson, Levi Pennington Johnston, born in 1863, was a county judge in Jackson County. In August 1898, he shot and killed his wife, Armina Bowling Rader Johnston, and then shot himself to death. There is a newspaper article about this tragedy. I have found Dr. Samuel Johnston (b.1808) listed as buried in three different cemeteries--Moores Creek in Jackson County, the Johnson Cemetery and another cemetery at Daisy in Perry County. I still can't figure out where his father, Samuel Johnston born 1777 is buried even though he is listed in 2 cemetery lists--the Johnson Cemetery and the one at Daisy. Thank you for your help. I think if you google Jackson Co KY genealogy you can find that.
