Spencer F. Godsey, age 58, of Hazard, Kentucky, died Thursday, March 24, 2011 at his home. He was born in Perry County, Kentucky on February 7, 1953 to Paul Godsey and Gladys Fugate Godsey. He is survived by a special friend: Elaine Gayheart; mother: Gladys Godsey; son: Andy Price; daughter: April Godsey; brothers: Dickie, Harold Gene, Elmer Clay and Delbert Godsey; sister: Hilda Stacy. She was born on January 16, 1922 in Hazard. She graduated from the University of Kentucky and was a public school teacher for two years in Perry County, 17 years in Wolfe County, and 13 years in Fayette County at Russell Cave Elementary, retiring in 1989. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charles E. Rose, Sr., and by her dear granddaughter Marian Gale Johnson. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jan Rose Heeg and Nathaniel Heeg of Seattle, Wa., her daughter Marianne Rose of Columbia, SC, and her son and daughter-in-law C. Edward and Karren Young Rose of Charlottesville, Va.; grandchildren Kathryn Rose Fallis of Raleigh, NC, Charles E. Rose, III, M.D. of Lexington, Elizabeth Rose Heeg and Rebekah Rose Heeg of Seattle; and four great-grandchildren. Olinger, Sr. departed this life on Monday, March 21. He was born in Hazard on March 10, 1926, the son of George "Dock" Olinger and Georgia Bell (Combs) Olinger, who preceded him in death. D.Y., as he was warmly known, accepted Jesus as his savior at an early age and became a member of First Baptist Church of Town Mountain. He attended Liberty High School in Hazard, and then later completed technical school. He joined the Navy at the age of 17 where he served as gunner's mate during World War II. He was united in marriage to his teenage sweetheart, Zetta Olinger, to which two sons and two daughters were born. D.Y. worked as a coal miner for approximately 15 years. He began his career in the health care field in 1962, and during the last 14 years served as the ARH stores supervisor, retiring from ARH in 1989. He liked knowing that he participated in providing quality patient care. D.Y. was ordained a deacon of the First Baptist Church Town Mountain and served as the chairman of the deacon board from 1979 until his death. In additional service to God and His church, over several years he lovingly served as a Sunday School teacher, Sunday School superintendent, president of the usher board and treasurer. As a Gideon he enjoyed sharing Bibles with people of all walks of life. D.Y. was known for his patience and kindness, which are virtues that touched many people. In all his relationships these qualities were evident. He was always willing to help out in any situation and set an example for others to follow. He was an outdoorsman and liked spending his leisure time fishing, hunting, gardening and sharing time with his family.
