    3. I have seen several articles on that. Right now I don't know just where, but I know it was in one book about Harlan County. I was thinking it was also in the book, History of Perry County, but am not sure of that. It even told of places he stayed while in KY. Actually, they did not buy the land, just the mineral rights. And some people sold their mineral rights for a little of nothing. > [Original Message] > From: <LyndaCGKyCol@aol.com> > To: <KYPERRY-L@rootsweb.com> > Date: 4/7/04 7:38:20 PM > Subject: Re: [KYPERRY-L] Post Civil War Mining Companies > > In a message dated 4/7/2004 7:01:08 PM Eastern Standard Time, > wpjohnson@kih.net writes: > > > It is my understanding that the coal companies did not buy up any land in > > any of the Eastern Kentucky Counties until several years after the Civil > > War. 3. It is my understanding that the coal companies did not buy up any land in any of the Eastern Kentucky Counties until several years after the Civil War. By 1890=1900 the coal mines were beginning to operate heavily. 1. Post Civil War Mining Companies
    2. Is anyone aware of a website, book, or whatever, where one could gain an understanding of how the coal mining companies gained their land in Perry County after the Civil War? Were they the so-called "Carpet Baggers"? Did they steal land and run people out of the County? My gg-grandfather, John "Squirrel Man" Walker and his family, collectively, owned about 7,000 acres of land along, and off, Troublesome Creek. I have land deeds showing where this land was sold between 1870 and 1873 for reasonable money. Yet, when they arrived in Texas in 1873 their first purchase of land was 40 acres for $12.50 down and two annual note payments of $50.00. That leads me to believe they left Perry County broke. It is also rather suspect that the old boy learned to write his name at age 81, with only one deed, out of many, showing his signature. Any ideas or thoughts? Any > suggestions would be appreciated. > ************************************************************* Hi Debbie, I doubt if there are still any floating around any courthouses, because its the law that each Courthouse has to send them to Frankfort. Maybe the county keeps a log book of deaths? I know they used to, but I'm not sure if thats still true. So unless they were severely mispelled, which I have seen a few like that, I'd say that a death certificate never was filled out for that person. I've tried every way under the sun to find one on my great-great grandmother with no luck. I guess the physician, or whoever just didn't take the time to fill one out for her. Also, You can do a particial search on the RootsWeb Ky Death Index and maybe find any that were misspelled. If you know the year and the county, it will bring up all the deaths in that one county for that year. I have some luck doing it that way. You can even put a first name and a county and get hits that way, Good Luck, Debbie. By the way, that was a good question! Lynda

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/nBB.2ACI/2870.1 Message Board Post: You can go on the Hazard Kentucky Perry County Website and there are pics of the Hazard Fired Department, several old and newer ones. There are stories there also if I am not mistaken. Can't you write the City of Hazard, Attn: City Clerk or the Mayor and ask for information relative to the City of Hazard Fire Department? I am sure there is information to be found. My family lived right above the Fire Department many years ago. I remember the people working there and I am sure if you might pen a letter to the Fire Department asking for information they will help you or direct you to someone who can.
