Vessely, age 81, of Hamilton, passed away in Hospice of Hamilton at Sunrise, on Thursday, April 15, 2004, at 12:50 a.m. She was born in Perry County, Kentucky, on March 18, 1923, the daughter of Butler and Jallie (Watkins) Wilson. Mary was a member of West Side Church of Christ and was employed as a social worker for the Dept. of Human Resources of Butler County for twenty-five years, retiring in 1987. On April 29, 1941, in Covington, Kentucky, she was married to Luther Parks and he preceded her in death; on April 22, 1966, in Hamilton, she was married to Robert Vessely and he preceded her in death. She is survived by two daughters, Sandra Sue Parks of Hamilton and Pamela and her husband Woody Hanger of Oxford; two devoted sisters, Ruth Blankenburg and Virginia Lee Brandner, both of Hamilton; four grandchildren, Jeff and Michelle Jamison and Jordan and Eliot Hanger and a number of nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Frederick S. Parks in 2003; one daughter, Jodi Lynn Parks in 1958 and two brothers, Ledford and Raymond Wilson. Funeral services will be held at the Brown Dawson Funeral Home, 1350 Millville Avenue, Saturday, April 17, 2004, at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Dan Knisley, Pastor of the West Side Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park. Hazard Herald, Thursday, July 12, 1934 Green B. Callahan, 55 years old, and one of the best known and most popular residents of Hazard, died at his home at Walkertown at 5:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon. Mr. Callahan had operated a store at Walkertown for several years and had been successful in business. He had been in declining health for six months. Funeral services with Re. A. S. Petrey and Rev. I. E. Inlow, in charge, were conducted at the Walkertown Baptist Church. Burial was in Breathitt County.
Hazard Herald, Thursday, July 19, 1934 Robert C. Napier Killed by Train Former Sheriff and Popular Citizen Meets Death At Napfor at 6 O'clock Monday Afternoon. R. C. "Red Bob" Napier, 70 years old, one of the best known and most popular citizen of Perry county, was killed at 6 o'clock Monday afternoon when hit by a Louisville and Nashville Railroad freight at Napfor. He had lived only a few minutes after being struck. Mr. Napier had spent the day in Hazard, returning to Napfor on the 4:25 train. Leaving the train, he crossed the track to visit a store where he made a small purchase. Returning he walked behind the passenger and into the path of the moving freight. Mr. Napier served a term as sheriff of Perry County and had always taken a keen interest in politics and public affairs. He was the owner of a large timber and coal acreage, and until 10 years ago, was an extensive lumber and log dealer. He was a member of the Baptist church and belonged to one of the county's prominent families. Funeral and burial services were conducted at the Napfor cemetery near Chavies st 2:00 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Rev. T.G. Bates was the officiating minister. Pall bearers were H.S. Adkins, A.J. Stout, Jerry Campbell, Bill Duff, Floyd Duff, and Brinton Davis. Mr. Napier is survived by two sons, W. B. Napier and Floyd Napier: five daughters, Mrs. Ira J. Duff, Mrs. E.M. Hazard Herald Thursday, May 10 1934 James Campbell Given Ten Year Term in Prison James Campbell, 20 years old, was found guilty of Manslaughter in the Perry circuit court Tuesday and given a sentence of ten years in prison. He was charged with the killing of his uncle, Andy CAMPBELL, on Troublesome Creek, May 5, of last year. His trial was started at noon Monday and went to the jury at 10:30 o'clock Tuesday. Hazard Herald, Thursday, May 17, 1934 Solly Collins Is Given Life Term Found Guilty of Participating in Murder of J.A. Simmons, Two Others Will Go On Trial. A jury in the Perry circuit court returned a verdict of guity in the case of Solly COLLINS, charged with participating in the killing of J.A. SIMMONS, and fixed his punishment at life in prison. COLLINS went on trial at 8:00 o'clock Wednesday morning. COLLINS, together with Marcellus FUGATE and Ed NAPIER was charged with killing J. A. SIMMONS, an aged peddler, who's lifeless body was found on the highway near Ary on the night of January 11. He had been stabbed to death and had nineteen wounds in his body. Following the finding of the body officers began an investgation and secured leads that placed the three defendants near the scene of the killing about thirty minutes before the lifeless body of SIMMONS was found. A large knife found near the body was said to be the property of COLLINS and was enough to have him under arrest. Collins denied any part of the crime and said that the knife found by officers was his property but had loaned it to Marcellus FUGATE. He admitted getting out of a car near where SIMMONS was killed but alleged that he had gone directly to his home. He explained that blood stains on his clothing with the statement that it came from a cut on the back of his left hand. NAPIER and FUGATE will go on trial at the present term of court.
Hazard Herald, Thursday, May 17, 1934 William Stidham Is Shot And Killed By Allison White William STIDHAM, 28 years old, electrician for the Kentucky Block Coal Company, was shot to death at 1:30 o'colock in front of the Hetrick's store at Clemons. Allison WHITE, 63 years old, is charged with the killing. A family grudge is said to be behind the slaying. Evidence presented before the coroner was that WHITE shot five times. STIDHAM had four wounds in the body and one in the face. WHITE had been in the store about 10 minutes when he saw STIDHAM approching, according to witnesses, and as STIDHAM neared the store door WHITE opened fire. At a preliminary hearing before County Judge A.M. GROSS at 1:00 o'clock Tuesday. WHITE was held to the grand jury without bond. Funeral and burial services for STIDHAM were conducted at 2:00 o'clock Sunday afternoon. (Lynda's note: I have William Stidham married to Adelia Combs, but I don't have her parents)

Hazard Herald Thursday, Sept 20, 1934 Mrs Asher Killed Mrs. Jennie ASHER of Hyden, 72 years old, died at 8:30 o'clock Sunday morning at the Hazard hospital from injuries recieved at 1:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon when she was struck by a car driven by Raymond COUCH. Mrs. ASHER was rushed to the hospital after the accident where an x-ray examination revealed a skull fracture and a spine injury. Raymond COUCH, 18 years old, is the son of Woodson COUCH. Car that he was driving is owned by Farmer OSBORN, an uncle. A warrant for the arrest of Mr. COUCH was issued by Judge A.M. GROSS at 10 o'clock Sunday morning. Hazard Herald, Thursday September 20, 1934 Accident Is Fatal To Troy Campbell Injury Recieved In Mine Of Fourseam Coal Co. Brings Death to Popular Young Man Troy CAMPBELL, 31 years old, injured in the mines of the Foreseam Coal Company on September 12, died at the Hazard hospital at 7 o'clock Friday morning. From the time of the accident his condition was considered critical. Mr CAMPBELL was a well known and popular young man and his death has brought sorrow to numerous friends. Mr. CAMPBELL is survived by his wife, Mrs Ora NAPIER Campbell, two daughters, Faye and Geraldine and one son, Fallen. Funeral and burial services were conducted at the Campbell burying ground near Napfor at 11 o'clock Saturday morning. Rev. A. R. PERKINS officiated.

Hazard Herald, Jan 2 1940 Yerkes Man Loses Life Body Found By Railroad Track Thought To Be Hit By Train Crit CAMPBELL's young son, Crit Jr. was a long time without a doctor Monday night, for his daddy hurrying after a physician was killed supposedly by an upbound freight train in the Yerkes yards. Young Crit, who is only a year old is suffering from pneumonia and is in critical condition. It became apparent late Monday night that the presence of a physician was an immediete necessity and Daddy Crit, bundled up well, hurried from his Napfor home after a doctor. It is supposed that he did not hear the approach of the train. His body was found beside the track. Claim agent L. E. HOLLINGSWORTH of Hazard was busy trying to discover if Crit had actually been hit by the train. None of the train crew saw any accident or were able to make any report of it when questioned by Hollingsworth today. Mr CAMPBELL is survived by his widow, Mrs. Lillie Campbell and by four other children in addition to Crit Jr. Six sisters also survive. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Wednesday at the home with Rev. Garrett Colwell in charge. Burial will be in the Napfor cemetery. Hazard Herald, Jan 2, 1940 Railroad Man is Heart Victim As He Goes Hunting Funeral plans are being planned for Wednesday afternoon for Jesse ADAMS, 49 year old Louisville and Nashville railroad conductor and brakeman who dropped dead while hunting near Booneville in Owsley County Monday morning. Mr. ADAMS had gone hunting with several friends and turned back complaining of pains in his chest. The friends hunted all day and found on their return to the starting point that ADAMS had failed to appear. They started to search for him and found his body slumped in the snow about 100 yards from where they had parted earlier in the day. Death was attributed to heart failure. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Retta ADAMS and by his daughter, Mrs. Pearl BOWLING and two younger sons at home. Mr ADAMS worked on mine 83 and 84 in the Vicco section and was well known there. From the Hazard Herald, Friday, Jan 5, 1940 Jeff Man Dies Thursday Evening Whitt CORNETT, 67, of Jeff, died at his home Thursday evening. He is survived by his widow, Liza Jane CORNETT. Mr CORNETT was born in Kentucky, the son of Henry and Susan BEGLEY CORNETT, and lived here all his life. Mr. Cornett's death which came at the Hurst Snyder hospital was caused by kidney and glandular disorder. In additition to his widow, he is survived by six sons, Jack, of Muskegon, Mich., Talt, Pearl, Russell, George, and Henry all of Jeff. Two daughters, Mrs. Green GUILLAN and Mrs. Wick SIZEMORE, both of Jeff also survive. One brother and a sister also survive. Funeral services will be held at the Jeff Baptist church at 10 o'clock Saturday, with burial at the COMBS Cemetery at Jeff.
