The Hazard Herald, 20 June 1912 Copied from microfilm by Allen Wallts Transcribed by Freddie Wilson, 2 August 2004 ANOTHER KILLING Sam Stacey telephoned Sheriff Horn that he was on his way from near Second Creek to surrender himself. He made his appearance shortly after the report of a shooting having taken place, in which Steve Standafer, age 35, married, leaving a wife and five children to mourn his loss, was almost instantly killed. The shooting took place in Stacey's store. Stacey wanted a speedy hearing and had three persons, who were present at the time of the shooting, summoned. The Hazard Herald, 6 February 1919 Copied from microfilm by Allen Watts Transcribed by Freddie Wilson 2 Aug 2004 JAMES ("FOGGY") STACY DIES The entire community was saddened last week by news of the death of James Stacy, familiarly known as "Foggy", on Tuesday at his home on upper Second Creek. He had been in failing health for several months, and the end came gradually, so it was not a shock. He was buried Wednesday by the local lodge of the Masons and Oddfellows. A large family survives him, and the older sons are already numbered among our formost citizens. "Uncle Jim" Stacy was one of the very best citizens Perry county has produced, and Perry county has, and has had, very many of nature's vertiable Princes among men. He was always kind, honorable and generous to a fault. A good father and husband, and his every spoken word was truth and reliability to every man. A truly honorable man, and all honored him as such. a good man, who had lived well to a ripe advanced age, has passed from our ??ldst, and many, beside his own family, will mourn his loss. [James "Foggy Jim" Stacy was born 28 Nov 1844 in Perry county, s/o John Stacy & Cynthia Smith. "Foggy" had 16 known children by three wives. He died Tuesday, 28 January 1919 at his home on Second Creek at age 74 years.] Freddie

Transcribed by Lynda Combs Gipson, 30 July 2004 >> This is a tough one, because I think some information here may be goofy. Both the Ritchie book and David Faris' "The Fugate Family of Russell County Virginia" give Gabriel's birth date as 3 Mar 1835, and name his wife Polly or Mary Polly Fugate. The Ritchie book agrees with this death date for Gabe of 8 Aug 1916. One of their sons is probably the informant, Hiram "Jink" Ritchie. Mary Polly Fugate was the daughter of Martin Fugate and Elizabeth Smith, and she died in 1905. However, Gabe's father was James Ritchie, first son of Alexander Crockett Ritchie and Susan Grigsby. His mother was *Hannah* Fugate, daughter of Martin Fugate and Mary --. Perhaps the confusion was due to the information "Jink" Ritchie gave, and he gave *his* mother's name, not his father's mother's name. Gabe's father James had a brother by the name of John, too. Then the undertaker Ike Ritchie: is he the same as Isaac "Big Ike" Ritchie, son of Gabriel Ritchie & Mary Polly Fugate? Enough confusion??
