I usually remind everyone to back up their work on the first of the month. Since we were on a trip at that time, I am running a tad late in the reminder this month. I have just corresponded with someone who had a computer crash and lost all their work. Now is the time to back everything up so if you have a crash you will still have your data. Carter
Hello Looking for confirmation about a Harlan County Battalion death of a JAMES LEWIS, as related by Ella V. Preston in a Civil War memoir on Don Chesnut's page. She says in late autumn, at a log house near BIG COWAN, a fight between Harlan Co. Battalion and Confederates killed James Lewis (Union) and JOHN COLLIER (Confederate) Lewis was buried the next day at Maggard Cemetery on the Cumberland River. Could this be the Battle of Leatherwood? When is the re-enactment? If it's the last weekend in October, I can't attend, but can someone help find info on this story? Thanks so much Phyllis Richerson Lewis descendant

Many Sizemores in Kentucky, North Carolina, Virginia, Alabama, and Arkansas did apply for Cherokee benefits, and appear on the Guion-Miller rolls (..."this includes the names of all persons applying for compensation arising from the judgment of the United States Court of Claims on May 28, 1906, for the Eastern Cherokee tribe. That's a quote from NARA's website where you can search the index and get the application # for the person you are interested in: http://www.archives.gov/research_room/arc/arc_info/native_americans_guion_mill er_index.html The application files themselves, complete with accompanying depositions from family members and friends in support of the individual's application, are available also through NARA. For example, one of the Arkansas Sizemore families that left Kentucky about 1852 had an applicant, Russell Sizemore, #41917, who lived in Madison County Arkansas at the time of application. He was the son of Ephraim Sizemore and Naomi Ritchie, grandson of Edward "Ned" Ritchie. Like the other Sizemores, his application was rejected. So, simply appearing on this roll does not guarantee Native American heritage. Appearance on one of the other rolls, such as the Dawes Roll (Final Rolls of Citizens and Freedmen of the Five Civilized Tribes in Indian Territory) does. Index at: http://www.archives.gov/research_room/arc/arc_info/native_americans_final_rolls_index.html What I meant about Ned Sizemore and his relationship with Martha Fields was that they were unmarried, but had a child, Isaac Newton Fields, during the period of time Ned and Louanna were having their own children. July 1892 in Roane Co., TN. He was in Perry County, KY in the 1920 & 1930 Perry Co., KY Census, as listed below. His father was General Johnson, and his mother was Louisa/Eliza/Lizzie Oody (she had been listed by all three). All I have been able to find in Kentucky for him, is what is in the census. I did find articles in the Rockwood Times, at the Roane Co. Herritage Society Library, concerning the death of two of his children and the death of his first wife. Unfortunately, it did not mention the names of any of them. I am putting together a book on the Oody family, and Grover is one of the few remaining descendants, that I need info on. I do not have the maiden names of either of his wives, nor the marriage dates. Any help would be deeply appreciated. Especially, if I could locate any living family members.
