    3. Thanks, Norma. We were hit with some really nasty weather......you name it.....we got it....Thunderstorms, remnants of Ivan caused flooding, 3 tornadoes touched down within 4 miles from my house......a little too close for comfort for me. But needless to say, everyone is fine and well. I would like to contact Mary Ann Newberry Campbell and see if she can give me more information about her parents and siblings of her mother. I found 2 Mary Campbell's in the phone directory in Hazard, KY. I telephoned them both. One was not a Newberry by maiden name, the other did not have a working phone number. Do you happen to know what name Mary Ann Newberry Campbell would be listed under in the telephone directory or what her street address is? If you feel uncomfortable posting that information on this board, feel free to email it to me at my email address registered on this message board. Thank you.

    1. School Census
    2. Carol Anderson
    3. I don't believe there was much consistency as to when or where the School Census were conducted. I know there was one done in 1890 in Knox County, KY. It listed the numbers of male and female children in each household (not always their names) so they would know how many students might be attending school. I think they were grouped by school district (what school they would attend). Carol Anderson

    2. Mary South
    3. Dona, I have that she was Mary E. Hall(per The Fugate Family of Russel Co., VA). However, in the 1930 Perry census there is a daughter, Daisy, listed. In the KY Birth index, Daisy's mother was listed as Mary Engle. Sons, Charley and Marcus have Mary Hall listed as the mother in the birth index. In the 1920 Perry census a step son, Martin, is listed as Hall...but Hall is marked through. So maybe Mary Engle was married to a Hall before marrying Martin Fugate? Mary South

    1. Re: Pension Record of John R. BEGLEY
    2. Beth Adams
    3. Linda & Donna, Yep, it's definitely a soap opera.........LOL Since 1997, Pension records have become my bedtime reading material. A lot of them are boring and will put you to sleep in a heartbeat. But on occasions, I do run across one that will keep you in suspense. Below is the information that I have to go on in order to try and sort out the children of John R. BEGLEY. . . Deposition by Catherine BEGLEY, Traveller's Rest, Owsley County, Kentucky - dated September 17, 1903 Catherine BEGLEY stated, "I am 65 years of age; my post office address is Traveller's Rest, Owsley County, Kentucky. I am the widow of the late John R. BEGLEY, who served as a member of Company G, 47th Kentucky Infantry, War of the Rebellion and who received an honorable discharge and was pensioned for disabilities received in the service and line of his duty while a member of said company and who died on the 23rd day of February 1892 as a result of said disabilities received in the service and for which pensioned. . . . I was married to John R. BEGLEY on the 22nd day of May 1867 at Traveller's Rest by the Rev. George W. MILLER. I had not been previously married but my husband, John R. BEGLEY, had been married to Betsy EVERSOLE and divorced from her . . . I was well acquainted with said Betsy EVERSOLE and knew her after she was divorced and married to Jerry FIELDS. They then lived on what was called Squabble Creek in Clay County, Kentucky. Both she and her husband are now dead. After he was divorced from Betsy EVERSOLE he lived with Lucy EVERSOLE for a while prior to his and my marriage but they were never married . . . She moved to the Indian Territory about fifteen years ago and died while there. Hiram BEGLEY, who had married her daughter, Rindy, wrote to his brother, Joab BEGLEY . . . He lives in Laurel County, Kentucky. . . . Hezekiah CREECH, who lives near Booneville, Kentucky, went with me when I visited Joab BEGLEY. . . Three children were born of my husband's marriage to Betsy EVERSOLE, Jane, Martha, and a little boy whose name I cannot recall but he died when he was a boy. I do not know where either of them now live. I heard from Martha seven or eight years and she was then living in the Middle Fork country in Hazard, Kentucky . . . Two children were born to my husband by Lucy EVERSOLE, viz. Rindy and Marcus. Marcus lived with his father an my self until he was about twenty six years of age when he died. Rindy married Hiram BEGLEY as above stated. . . It was one of Hiram BEGLEY's children that wrote about Lucy EVERSOLE's death. In the letter above mentioned it was stated that Hiram BEGLEY, his wife Rindy and mother in law Lucy EVERSOLE were all dead. Edward GAY and Abel JOHNSON both of Gays Creek, Perry County, Kentucky were well acquainted with my husband at the time he was living with Lucy EVERSOLE and know that they were never married but that they just lived together. Ten children were born to me and my husband, John R. BEGLEY, as follows: Alfred, Elizabeth, Nancy, Susan, Mary, Elijah, Orlena, Tennessee, and Rachel. Rachel my youngest child and my first born a little boy are dead. The boy died before he was named. . . Tennessee and Orlena are the youngest and are both married. . . " (NOTE: The deposition was taken prior to finding out that Lucy EVERSOLE was still alive, married, and residing in Arkansas!) According to the deposition above, Catherine stated that John R. BEGLEY and Betsy EVERSOLE had the following three children: Martha BEGLEY Jane BEGLEY A Little Boy BEGLEY, who died young In the 1850 Census, John BEGLEY is residing in Perry County and listed as follows: 1850 Perry County, Kentucky Census, District 1 (H) 87/95 BEGLEY, John, 36, F (?), Farmer, 100, KY, cannot read or write . . . Jane, 15, F, KY . . . Abijah, 13, M, KY . . . Bradford, 10, M, KY . . . Adella, 4, F, KY . . . Lafeyatt, 1, M, KY In researching online at Rootsweb WorldConnect, there are a couple of researchers who state that Abijah BEGLEY, listed above under the household of John BEGLEY, died on December 4, 1853 in Perry County, Kentucky. This would coincide with the deposition above and place Abijah BEGLEY as the little boy of John R. BEGLEY and Betsy EVERSOLE who died as a boy as stated by Catherine BEGLEY in the deposition above. Based on the 1850 Census and the date of death for Abijah BEGLEY, he died approximately at the age of 16. So based on the above information, so far, we have the following: John R. BEGLEY married Betsy EVERSOLE children: Martha, Jane, and Abijah John R. BEGLEY and Lucy EVERSOLE children: Rindy and Marcus John R. BEGLEY and Catherine SANDLIN children: Unnamed Boy BEGLEY, Alfred, Elizabeth, Nancy, Susan, Mary, Elijah, Orlena, Tennessee, and Rachel Hope this helps. More later ........... 3. Linda & Dona, Funny that this couple should pop in here at this time........ Since the kids are now back in school, I was doing a little house cleaning on my files and ran across the Civil War pension for John R. BEGLEY. In reviewing the pension record over the last day or so, here is what was stated: John R. BEGLEY first married Betsy EVERSOLE and they divorced abt. 1846. John and Betsy had Jane BEGLEY, Martha BEGLEY, and a little boy who died at a young age. After they divorced, Betsy married Jerry FIELDS and resided in Clay County, Ky. Second, John had a relationship with Betsy WARD and had at least one son named Layfayette. Betsy died before 1850. From here on out it gets a little confusing........<grin> Third, John was supposed to have been married to Lucy EVERSOLE, sister to Henderson EVERSOLE and a cousin to Betsy EVERSOLE, who was John's first wife who later married Jerry FIELDS. John and Lucy were married by Thomas MURRELL in Perry County. However, there is no record of a marriage license. Thomas MURRELL was a minister of the Gospel for two churches and had a bad reputation. He was later ousted by the church. The neighborhood thought that Thomas performed a "MOCK" ceremony for John and Lucy and there were some who did not believe they were married. John and Lucy had two children: Marinda "Rindy" BEGLEY and Marcus BEGLEY. According to the pension record, John left Lucy because she left a small child of Betsy WARD's too close to the fire unattended. The child's clothes caught fire and he burned to death. Lucy's daughter, Marinda "Rindy" married Hiram BEGLEY. Lucy, Hiram, and Rindy moved to Indian Territory abt. 1887. Lucy married a man by the name of KISSINGER about 1900 and was residing in Arkansas. Marcus lived with Catherine SANDLIN and his father, John BEGLEY up until he died at the age of 26. Fourth, John married Catherine "Kate" SANDLIN.......here we go again.........<grin> Apparently, the marriage ceremony of John and Lucy was enough to convince John that it was for real. After he left Lucy, John took up with Catherine SANDLIN and resided in Owsley County, Kentucky. John and Catherine were brought up on charges of Adultry in Owsley County, Kentucky, however the charges were thrown out of court. John must have believed that his marriage to Lucy was real, because he files for divorce in Perry County, but it was dismissed or thrown out. With no record of marriage and no divorce, he then marries Catherine SANDLIN in Owsley County. John and Catherine had the following children: a little boy who died before it was named, Alfred, Elizabeth, Nancy, Susan, Mary, Elijah, Orlena, Tennessee, and Rachel, who died young. Some people also mentioned in the pension record are Henderson EVERSOLE, brother of Lucy; Joe EVERSOLE, father of Henderson and Lucy; Joab BEGLEY, brother to Hiram BEGLEY; Swimfield BEGLEY, brother to John R. BEGLEY.......and more.......... I am still in the process of reviewing the pension record. The record is over 200 pages and it has my head spinning......<grin> So far it does not mention, Judy DAVIDSON or Elizabeth COMBS.
