He was a retired coal miner and the son of the late Sanders Spurlock and the late Eva Combs Spurlock. He was also preceded in death by his son, Charles Spurlock, and a host of brothers and sisters. He is survived by his son, J.B. Spurlock; daughter-in-law Wilma K. Spurlock; grandchildren J.B. Spurlock, Cheryl Lusk, Johnnie Faye Spurlock, Creighton Spurlock, Holly Girardi, Mark Spurlock, Heidi Cuddy and Sally King Wagner. He is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. Arrangements are being handled by Maggard Mountain View Chapel of Hazard where the family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27. Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 28 with J.T. Eversole and Felix Shepherd officiating. Interment will be at Resthaven Cemetery in Jeff. ****************************************** Larry Wayne Napier Larry Wayne Napier, age 45, of London, passed away Sunday, April 24 at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. He was the son of Henry Bud Napier of Hazard and Ollie Neace of London, the father of Aaron Napier, Katlyn Napier and Dylan Napier of Toledo, Ohio, the brother of Mike Napier of London, Danny Robertson of Gainesville, Georgia and Clint Napier and Teresa Brewer, both of Hazard, Tina Napier of Nicholasville, Beth Napier and Laura Rotondi, both of London, and fiancée of Peggy Meekman of London. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Friday in the Bowling Funeral Home Chapel with Merle David Collins officiating. Burial will follow in the Swiss Colony Cemetery at London. The family will receive friends at Bowling Funeral Home from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Military honors will be conducted by the local DAV. ****************************************** Edmund Lawrence Mengel Edmund Lawrence Mengel, 88, of Birmingham, Al., passed away Wednesday, April 13. He was born July 28, 1922 in Davenport, Iowa to Zelma and Edmund Albert Mengel. He entered the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant. During World War II, Ed served in the Army Corps of Engineers in Italy. Following his military service, he graduated from Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy with a BS degree in mechanical engineering. Ed was a hardworking man who began his career with US Steel Corporation; he was promoted through the ranks and retired in 1977 as plant manager of its Leeds, Alabama facility of the Universal Atlas Cement Division. He wasn't ready to quit working and went on to enjoy a second career in construction management with Alabama Power in Birmingham. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marilyn (Comstock) and his brother William K. He is survived by his wife, Robbie (Mosley) of Birmingham, sons Matt of Asheville, N.C., Alan of Naples, Fl. and his daughter, Jeanette Hall of Hazard, along with multiple loving grandchildren. He will be cremated and there will be no services, in keeping with the wishes of the deceased. In lieu of flowers, well-wishers should donate in Ed's name to organizations doing good work on Alzheimer's research. ******************************************** Debra Watts Debra Mae Watts, 57, died Thursday, April 21 at the Hazard ARH medical center. She was born in Perry County, the daughter of the late Estill Combs and the late Aileen Combs. She is survived by her husband, Clifton Watts of Brownsfork; son Adam Clifton Watts of Brownsfork; daughter Jodie Watts of Brownsfork; brother Wendell Combs of Typo; sisters Vickie Deaton of Brownsfork and Wanda Deaton of Typo, along with a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted on Saturday, April 23 at the Engle-Walker Funeral Home of Hazard with Donnie Oliver officiating. She is also survived by her husband, Michael Combs of Bulan; daughter Alicia Combs of Bulan; brothers Nick Plowman of Hazard, James Plowman of Vicco, Stephen Plowman and Michael Plowman, both of Hazard; sisters Tammy Combs of Bulan, Jamie Riley, Karen Bryant, Rebecca Smith and Aronna Hughes, all of Hazard, and Sabrina Smith of Busy, along with a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held on Sunday, April 24 at the Engle-Walker Funeral Home of Hazard. The burial followed in the Bush Cemetery in Pigeon Roost. ********************************************* Charles Asher Charles Asher, 80, of Hazard, died Wednesday, April 20 at home. He owned and operated Asher Liquor Store and was the son of the late Henry Asher and the late Ida Bailey Asher. He was also preceded in death by his son, Roy Asher, and 11 siblings. He is survived by his wife, Allie Asher; daughters Linda Deaton and husband Danny and Jackie Bowling and husband Roger; sisters Rebecca Asher Melton and Emma Asher Campbell; bother Robert Asher; grandchildren Scott, Allison, Colby, Zach, Raven, Alex, Kevin and Leslie; great-grandchildren Hunter, Hayden, Alex, Abby, Austen, Darren and Austin, along with a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. Arrangements are being handled by Maggard Mountain View Chapel of Hazard where the family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, April 22. Funeral services will begin at noon on Saturday, April 23. She was a retired operator for General Telephone and the daughter of the late Beckham Davidson and the late Mae Combs Davidson. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Thelma Warner and Ethel Lee. She is survived by her husband, Joe Combs; sons Randy Combs and wife Joyce and Kent Combs and wife Cindy; sister Kathleen Wallace; brother Charles Davidson; grandchildren Kevin, Carly, Jordan and Jonathan. Arrangements are being handled by Maggard Brothers Funeral Home of Hazard where the family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26. Services will immediately follow. He was the son of the late Woodrow Walker and Polly Raleigh Walker, and worked as a finisher for Brownies Dry Wall. He is survived by his wife, Marthajayne; sons Billy Jr. "Hodge," Woodrow, John, Greg, Rick, Charlie and Amos Walker; daughter Linda Parks; sisters Patsy Walker, Phyllis Ratliff, Gerry Phillips, Linda Moore and Brenda Toupin; brother James Walker, along with several grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.     2. I knew and worked with Paul for years but ironically we never discussed genealogy. I retired in 2001 and started genealogy in 1999. Here is his obit. Frankfort – Paul N. Maggard, 69, husband to the love of his life, Sheila (Gayheart) Maggard, passed away on Tues., Apr. 19, 2011. He was born May 11, 1941 in Knott County, KY to the late William Arnold and Elaine Slone Maggard. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and Capital Odd Fellows Lodge #6. He retired from the Dept. of Revenue and was a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University. Along with his wife Sheila, he is survived by two sons, Jeff (Emily) Maggard of Lawrenceburg and Chris Maggard of Frankfort; two brothers, Larry Maggard of Shelbyville and Richard Maggard of Minnesota; four sisters, Charlotte Carothers of Tennessee, Doris Stanley of Owensboro, Linda Delaney of Texas and Jennifer Stevens of Indiana; one grandson, William Nelson Maggard; and one special nephew, Ralph Gayheart. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Fri. Apr. 22, 2011 at Clark Legacy Center, Versailles Rd. with Rev. Jack Brewer officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. She is survived by six children; George Edward (Helen) Garrett, Shirley (Mack) Pratt, Lena Faye Sebastian, Blanche (Wilgus) Collins, Ruth (Sid) Isaacs, and Sally (Tom) Collins; 32 grandchildren; 65 great grandchildren; numerous great great grandchildren and many other loving relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Elbert in 1949, four sons, John Harrison, Roy Ray, Roger Eugene and Elbert Garrett; son-in-law Ray Jr. Sebastian and daughter-in-law Bernice Smith Garrett. She was born on December 5, 1914 in Midway, Ky., the daughter of Elbert Clay and Carrie Wigginton Combs. She had a twin sister, Eleanor Clay Combs, who died a few days after birth. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arley Reginald Barber, her son Arley Reginald Barber, Jr., her brother and sister-in-law along with many lifetime friends. She graduated from Ward-Belmont College in Nashville and she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority at the University of Kentucky. She lived in Hazard most of her life and came to Memphis five years ago to be closer to her daughter, Carole. Katie, as people from Hazard called her, had a lifelong love of music and spent hours playing the piano and organ until a few years ago when her hands were too arthritic for her to do so. She played dinner music on the organ at La Citadelle for 25 years. She was also an avid Kentucky Wildcat basketball fan until her death. Until death, she was an extremely outgoing "people person" and had a keen sense of humor. She is survived by her daughter, Carole Barber Smith and husband Philip of Memphis; daughter-in-law Cynthia Barber of Mt.
