She was born August 6, 1934 in Combs to the late Charles and Louise Combs Luttrell. She also lived in Jeff and Hazard until she moved to Lexington in 1981. She graduated in 1953 from Hazard High School and attended nursing school in Illinois, which prepared her for a 10-year nursing job with Appalachian Regional Hospital. During this period she was instrumental in setting up the hospice care program in Perry County. In 1966 she went to work for the state as officer manager for the Perry County Social Services Division in Hazard, and transferred to the Lexington division in 1981. She married her late husband, Eli Logan, in 1957. Nicknamed "Merk" by her friends, she was an extremely popular character who made friends very quickly. She was full of humor and wit, loved to play games, cook, listen to music, play the piano or organ and was a very avid sports fan, watching Kentucky basketball, NFL and many youth league activities. She was always willing to help out a family member or friend. She raised three children and was always helping organize things family related or public. She was head of concessions of the Hazard Little League and Babe Ruth for eight years, and one of the most unselfish people you would ever meet. She also took care of her mother, Louise, in her mother's final years. In the early 1990s, Mary Carolyn's health began to decline and she was forced to retire early from her state job. She was such a stong-willed person that she was able to fight through her illnesses for over two decades, but she lost the battle in 2011. Special thanks go out to the people of Hospice Care of the Bluegrass, as her passing was painless and comfortable. She will be missed by many. She was a member of three churches: First Baptist Church of Jeff, First Baptist Church of Hazard and recently the Hillcrest Baptist Church of Versailles in Lexington. She was also preceded in death by sisters Lillian Lee Suttles, Charlotte Dale Hayes and Margaret Sue Holloway. She did not want a traditional funeral service as her body was to be donated to the University of Kentucky for science. Her cremated remains were to be taken and spread over the grave sites of her beloved mother and father in Perry County, and it will be honored. ******************************************** Cindy Caudill Cindy Lou Caudill, 46, died on Tuesday, June 28.
