    1. [KYPERRY] OBIT John Paul Young 1925-2008

Author: KandyBackAgee Surnames: Young, Anderson, Murrell Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kentucky.counties.perry/5008/mb.ashx Message Board Post: NOTE: I DO NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS INDIVIDUAL. JUST POSTING THE OBITUARY ON JOHN YOUNG FROM THE HAMILTON (OH) JOURNAL-NEWS 3/27/08 John Paul Young of Fairfield Township, OH died on March 24, 2008 at Mercy Hospital of Fairfield. He was born on April 2, 1925 in Black Mountain (a small mining town) in Perry County, KY, to Ethel (Anderson) and Wimmer Albert Young. Preceding John Paul in death were his parents; 4 brothers, Herbert, Roy, Daniel Webster, and an infant brother; and his godson, Jefferey Hugglestone. Surviving are his beloved wife, Olive Belle (Murrell) Young; son, Daniel Paul Young, D.V.M. (Sarah June Dean); daughter, Olivia Murrell Young Wallace, M.D. (Kenneth Franklin Wallace, D.M.D.); his 4 precious granddaughters: Hannah (8), Naomi (6) and Rachel (2) Young and Maggie Wallace (10); his goddaughters, Leslie (Hugglestone) Langham and Nancy Humbach; and his godsons, David and Jimmy Hugglestone. During WWII, at age 17 John Paul dropped out of high school and joined the US Navy on February 5, 1943. He served on a Patrol Craft (PC) as a signalman using flashing lights, semaphore, and flag hoists in! several major battles in the Pacific. His responsibility was to protect the troop and cargo ships in a huge convoy and to set up communications on beaches. Becoming exceptionally skilled in an extremely dangerous situation, he learned a very valuable lesson: he could succeed in whatever he chose to do, but he needed a good education. After more than 3 years in the US Navy, on April 9, 1946 he was honorably discharged as Signalman Second Class, USN. He then returned to high school, earned his GED and graduated from Cumberland Jr. College (Williamsburg, KY) and Carson Newman College (Jefferson City, TN). John Paul married Olive Belle Murrell, his best friend and life-long sweetheart (also a CN graduate), on May 30, 1953 in Fonde, KY. Together in 1956 they received their Master's Degrees from Miami University in Oxford. He continued his education at Miami and Case Western University, obtaining certification as a school psychologist and as a licensed psychologist to do private! practice. His 11 years of teaching were in KY, TN and OH (Hanover and Hamilton) followed by 24 years as a school psychologist in Fairfield and West Carrollton. Mr. Young was a life-long learner and avid reader. He loved animals and the great outdoors. He and his family hiked the northern portion of the Appalachian Trail. John Paul loved sailing and spent a year at sea on a 37-foot sailboat with Dr. Alan Springer (Miami University) and Admiral, the yellow lab. He was active in the US Coast Guard Auxiliary serving in numerous capacities. He especially enjoyed teaching navigation and boating safety. He was a devout Christian, a 54-year member of the First Baptist Church of Hamilton serving in several capacities (including Sunday school teacher and chairman of the Board of Deacons). John Paul was an avid believer in absolute equality and longed for the day when men and women of all races would be treated equally and could become whatever they wanted to become in any field of service. A special thanks to William Krall, M.D., his family physician a! nd the many doctors and nurses at Mercy who so lovingly and skillfully cared for him. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., March 29, 2008 at the First Baptist Church of Hamilton, 1502 Pyramid Hill, Hamilton, OH 45013 with Dr. Dennis Metzger, Rev. William C. Brantingham and Rev. Amber Murrell officiating. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., March 28, 2008 at the Avance Funeral Home & Crematory, 4976 Winton Rd., Fairfield. Burial will be at the Alder Branch Cemetery, Sevierville, TN. 2. Carter L Combs
    3. Dona Here is another message posted on the Combs-Coombs mail list. Carter Hi Cousins My wife and I made a trip to Ky. and we found the following in the Hazard Library Genealogy section. And in the County Court house, Perry county clerks office files. Perry Co. Ky. Deed Book 44 Pages 546 and 547 Has: "Finly Sira Combs (with x his mark) (Although so far this is the only time he ever used the name). I found another deed book 56 page 422. Riley Combs and wife. (Amy Wells Combs). Deeding to Buddy Combs (Rileys brother). In this deed it quotes Riley Combs (heir of Massingle Combs). How could Riley be heir to Massingle Combs?. This was throwing a wrench in the works until we figured it out. Riley was the son of Polly Combs d/o Massingill Combs. Thats how he gets to be the heir. 1898 Perry Co. Ky school census dist #22 Mouth of the Carr I found a transcription by Hayes that had Parent /Guardian as Louisa Combs. This drove us all nuts trying to figure out who in the world Louisa was. We went to the Perry Co. Ky. school board and got a copy of the census. It has. Parent/Guardian as Saissa (sic) we now believe this is supposed to be Sorry Combs. also listed in Hayes was children. Riley Combs 19 m 23 Dec 1878, Buddy Combs 16 m 20 July 1882 and Bitha 13 f 10 apr 1885. School board copy the same except, Bitha should be Betty. Sira's father is Alexander S. Combs b. abt 1825. Evidentally we have two Alexanders born within 10 years of each other and married Brashears. These two Brashears have been confused with each other and even put together as the same person. Therefore the marriage dates have been scrambled. The marriage dates listed below are the correct ones. I still need parents for Aexander S. Combs and Polly Brashear. Anyone have any ideas?. Another deed found is a beauty. Book 21 page 251. It lists all the heirs and establishes Polly as wife and widow of Alexander Combs. 1850 Perry Co. Ky census precinct 2 14 Alexander S. COMBS 25 M Farmer (md. 6 Nov 1846) Polly (BRASHEAR) 23 F Silas 3 M Crittendon 2 M 196 Alexander COMBS 34 M Farmer (md. 19 Dec 1841) (s/o Birdeye Nick and Elizabeth COMBS) Mary (BRASHEAR) 27 F (d/o Robert Brashear) Margaret 5 F Robert 3 M William 2 M Elizabeth 7/12 F 1880 Perry Co. Ky census enumerations dist #82 Combs Bonaparte 33 Betty Jane 25 (d/o Alexander Combs and Polly Brashear) Combs Sira m 25 (Finly Sira Combs, Betty Janes Twin) Perry Co. Deed book 21 page 250 establishes that Sira and Betty Jane were brother and sister and that Sirah Combs and Polly Combs were man and wife and that Bonaparet and Betty Jane Combs were husband and wife) 1880 Perry Co. Ky census dist #2 Combs Crittenden 30 Polly 50 (mother) (Polly Brashear) (Widow of Alexander S. Combs md. 6 Nov 1846) Elhannon 28 m. Elizabeth Guinn/4 Oct 1887 Sira 26 (Finly Sira Combs) Betty Jane 26 (md. Bonaparte Combs) Sally 24 William 18 (Note: somehow Sira and Betty Jane managed to get counted in the same census in two different districts. We also think the reason for this is that Bonaparte and Betty Jane got married this period of time). (I don't know what the S stands for in Alexanders name but I'm leaning toward Sira).
