She was a member of the Grace Brethren Church in Trotwood and was attending Mt Pisgah Baptist Church in Oliver Springs, TN. Survivors include her husband, Ashford; a son and daughter-in-law, the Rev Robert and Julie Combs of Norton, OH; two daughters and sons-in-law, Ruth and Bruce E Garber of West Milton, Bertha and Benjamin Grauman of New Lebanon; a daughter-in-law Dorothy Hsu of Columbus. Also surviving are three brothers, Edward C Combs of Ormond Beach, Fl, Charles L Combs of Bonaire, GA, and Harold combs of Franklin; one sister, Edith E Meadows of Clayhole, KY; eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A mulatto girl around 14, perhaps named Janey Young, shot a man from a rather prominent family (unknown). She claimed accident but was convicted. That's all the details I have. My mother (an Adams from Hazard) went to some of the trial and has been haunted about the event since she was a girl. Any info greatly appreciated! JUST POSTING THE OBITUARY ON DONALD RITCHIE FROM THE SPRINGFIELD (OH) NEWS-SUN 4/5/08 Donald Ray "Buddy" Ritchie, 69, of Springfield, OH passed away unexpectedly April 3, 2008 in his residence. He was born in Hazard, KY on November 20, 1938, the son of Wade and Mary Ellen (Wooten) Ritchie. Buddy was a member of the Union Club. He retired from the Ohio Operating Engineers Union Local #18 as a heavy equipment operator with 30 years of service. Buddy enjoyed going to auctions, working in the garden, restoring old cars, watching NASCAR, football, and CNN. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Ottie Prater and Annie White; two brothers Jimmy and Vernon Ritchie; father and mother in law William and Libby Moore; brother in law Carl Yates. He has left to cherish his memory, his wife of 49 years Marcella Rose (Moore) Ritchie, whom he married February 7, 1959; four children Mary Mader and Donald W. Ritchie, both of Springfield, OH, Tina and Gary Grigg of Urbana, OH, Nina (Danny) Alderson of South Charleston, OH; 4 sisters Bonnie Bloomer of Wolcottville, IN, ! Inez Conley of Kendallville, IN, Maxine Tucker of Dwarf, KY, Rosie Shepherd of Emmelina, KY; 11 grandchildren Sherrie Thornton, Jeffrey Mader USAF, Christopher Ritchie, Nick Ritchie, Phillip Smith, Wade Ritchie, Morgan Weaver, Katelyn, Grigg, Joe Weaver, Haley Weaver, Hunter Grigg; 8 great-grandchildren Sean Thornton, Karissa Thornton, Nathan Ritchie, Journey Davis, Kayla, Lexi, and Jackson Mader, Kyndal Ritchie; 5 brothers in law Billy and Hannah Moore, Donnie and Sandy Moore, Joey and Carol Moore, Ronnie and Joan Moore, Larry and Sue Moore; 4 sisters in law Bev and Ray Moore, Carolyn and Johnny Brooks, Sharon Yates, Becky and Jack Brakeall; special friend and cousin Carl Patrick; several nieces and nephews. A gathering of friends and family will be April 7, 2008 from 5-8 PM in the RICHARDS, RAFF & DUNBAR MEMORIAL HOME. Services will be April 8, 2008 at 1:00 PM in the memorial home with Rev. Survivors include three children; Wilma (Dallas) Mattox, Homosassa, FL, Dianna Fugate (Larry Godsey), Springfield, OH and Omega (Steven) Chamberlain, Citrus Springs, FL, 13 grandchildren including a very devoted grand daughter Jennifer Schafer, 22 great grand children, 6 great great grandchildren, two sisters Deloris Combs, Hazard, KY and Sallie Miller, Irvine, KY, one step daughter, two step sons and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Arlen Fugate in 1987, a daughter Wanda Fay Feltner, a son Billy Ray Feltner and her parents. Funeral services and burial will be held in Hazard, KY. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Mercy Hospice. Arrangements are being handled by the JONES-KENNEY-ZECHMAN FUNERAL HOME.
