Hello List, could anyone on this list tell me if they have come across or heard of a murder in Pendleton between 1878-1883 I know this family was in Pendleton County, on the 1880 Census. The last name involved with the murder is Britton. I would have been maybe self defense or justified homicide since my ancestor didn't serve time in jail as far as I know. He went to TX and lived the rest of his life. I find it hard to believe that he just got away with this since his father wrote him letters from time to time. Please let me know if you have heard of this. Thanks Kenneth Britton -- _______________________________________________ Find what you are looking for with the Lycos Yellow Pages http://r.lycos.com/r/yp_emailfooter/http://yellowpages.lycos.com/default.asp?SRC=lycos10
Western Argus August 6, 1892 AN APPALLING RECORD! ............. Of Crime in Pendleton County, Kentucky! ........... Has it an Equal Anywhere? FALMOUTH, Ky., Oct. 4: The Farmers' Alliance organizations in this country participated in a big blow out and political jamboree at Goforth, a small place, about ten miles west of Falmouth. Political spirits ran high, but spirits frumenti ran higher, it seems. Some noted local toughs were on hand, well primed for an encounter. Tom Arnold, a son of a respectable and well - to - do farmer, became involved in a difficulty with Robert Jones, a noted tough, who has been before the criminal court quite often within the last ten years. Jones was badly shot by Arnold, but may live. During the excitement Robert Asberry, a well - to - do farmer from Gum Lick, was fatally shot, dying within a few hours. Asberry was a bystander, and it appeared that some enemy seized the opportunity to shoot him. John Laudrain, another tough, who carries already the brand of a murderer, is suspected of the crime as he was seen with a pistol about the time the shooting was done. All parties are married men, except Tom Arnold. Asberry leaves a large family. No arrests have been made as yet. This makes the second murder that has been committed within the boarders of Pendleton county within twenty-four hours, and two other men are lying at the point of death as a result of their experience within the same time. Briefly reviewed, Pendleton county has a dark and most shameful criminal record. Within the last two years, murders, almost countless, have been committed within her borders - assignations of the most daring and revolting nature. Marshal Vogelsong shot down at his own gate by here cold blooded assassins, armed with two double barreled shotguns, charged with buckshot. They now serve a life sentence in the Kentucky penitentiary. Lewis Jones, shot down at his place of business in a heartless manner. James Rachford, waylaid and shot as he was returning home late at night. Old man Lowe and wife, Ku-kluxed and shot at their humble home. Nath. Roberts, shot and killed in a drunken brawl on the street here. Mace parker, shot down with a doubled barreled shotgun. Old man Gruelle, taken from home by a masked mob and hanged, and many other crimes and depredations stain her once fair name. The stigma of crime and shame must be lifted from her, and a vigilant, vindictive and fearless prosecution must follow every infraction of law and justice. Retributive justice must be quickly and certainly meted out to every violator and criminal, or we will suffer under the long record of crime. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kenneth Britton" <kennethr.britton47567@lycos.com> To: <KYPENDLE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 01, 2005 11:07 AM Subject: [KYPENDLE] Murder in Pendleton County, KY > Hello List, > > could anyone on this list tell me if they have come across or heard of a murder in Pendleton between 1878-1883 I know this family was in Pendleton County, on the 1880 Census. Hello everyone, Does anyone have information (parents / siblings) on the James RACHFORD mentioned below? I have much information on the Rachford/Rochford/Ratchford family of Pendleton and Kenton counties. I haven't been able to place this particular James with a family as of yet.
