At the noon hour the table was spread with everything that was good to eat and everyone present did his share in helping to devour the good things. Mrs. Whalen is a devoted wife and mother of 13 children, nine of whom are still living; 44 grandchildren, and 40 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Whalen was in the flood of July 10, 1849, at Foster, KY, where there were nine persons killed, four being from the Smalley family, brothers and sisters of Mrs. Whalen. She and one of her other sisters sat astride the comb of their barn and owing to that their lives were saved. She married Mr. Whalen and came to Harrison county, where she helped her husband to clear their ground and build a log hut which they occupied until they made enough to build themselves a fine home where they now reside and are surrounded with every comfort of an up-to-date farmer. Those that were present to help make merry on this occasion were: Mr. & Mrs. Allie Whalen and two daughters, Cynthia and Gertie; Mr. & Mrs. John Ecker, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Price, Mrs. Matt Barns, Miss Annie Arnold, Sam, Riley and Leslie Eckler; Stanley Blackburn and Golf Arnold. All left at a late hour, wishing the old lady many more happy birthdays. Her husband will celebrate his 85th birthday April 6, 1920, if the Lord is willing.
