Wilson Falmouth Outlook Volume 14 Number 28 17 Dec 1920 pg. 7 Col. 3 Story of the Rebellion At the time Confederate General, Kirby Smith, threatened an invasion of Cincinnati during the Civil War, home guards were organized in the vicinity of the city both in Ohio and Kentucky and were called the "Squirrel Hunters." Because many of them consisted of old-time farmers armed with rifles which they were accustomed to hunting squirrels and other game with. If the Confederates had not retired they might have received the same reception the Colonial squirrel hunters handed the British at Lexington, or Jackson's Squirrel Hunters dished out at New Orleans in 1812. The squirrel hunters were entrenched back of Covington and had a company of regulars on the picket line. They responded to the Confederate fire right sharply, and believing the Union forces stronger than they really were the Confederates retired. I have since talked with some of the Squirrel Hunters and they told me that the Confederates could have easily defeated them had they come on. A number of laughable incidents are recorded in the history of Ohio. There was a man who lived in Cincinnati at the time who possessed considerable military knowledge and he was appointed commander of the Ohio forces. He stammered very badly, and more so under excitement. He declined and asked to serve as a private. He was asked why he refused to serve in the capacity of commander, as he was the most eligible man for the place. The gentleman said: "You ought to have sense enough to know that the soldiers would all walk into the river before I could say h-h-h-alt." They gave him a gun and picked another man for commander. T.
