B.T. Riggs Full of years and honors, Capt. B.T. Riggs passed away at his home on East Bridge Street Tuesday afternoon September 14th, at 1:30 o'clock. He had been confined to his bed about ten days with liver trouble, though for several years his health had been gradually failing. Seven years ago he retired from active business life, and had been living in quite retirement. From 1882, when Riggs and Musselman bought the Crown Jewel Milling Co., Capt. Rigs was the head of that institution, and coming in contact with the majority of the people of the county and vicinity established a reputation for business acumen and integrity that stood him in good stead up to the time of his retirement. He was a member of the School Board for 27 years, retiring last spring, having long served as chairman. He united with the Presbyterian church at Falmouth 44 years ago, and was an elder in the church at Cynthiana for many years. He was a member of the Odd Fellos and Masons at Falmouth. Benjamin Theodore Riggs was born in Paris, KY., on Feb. 25, 1839, a son of Benjamin Riggs and Anges Wilson Riggs. His father was born in Maryland in 1799 and learned the jeweler's trade in Philadelphia. He located at Millersburg, KY., thence going to Paris in the jewelry business, where he died in 1839. His wife Agnes Wilson Riggs, was born at Falmouth and was the daughter of James Wilson, a Revolutionary War Veteran. Capt. Riggs was married to Miss Kate Kerr in Fayette County, near Elmendorf, on April 26, 1866. His wife survives with two daughters and a son Major Kerr T. Riggs, stationed at Ft. Leavenworth, Kan., Mrs. W.E. Selin and Miss Theo Riggs, of this city. A brother, W.B. Riggs lives at Covington. Immediately after the war, in which Capt. Riggs was a Federal soldier, he was in business in Williamstown. He come to Cynthiana in 1870 in the internal revenue service as a storekeeper-gauger, afterwards entering into business as noticed above.
