    1. Re: [KYPENDLE] PRESTONs in "Shoemaker Town"
    2. Susan Shoemakertown is east across the Main Licking River from Falmouth. It never consisted of may houses. Some of them are still there. One crosses the river going east from Falmouth and enter Shoemakertown. About a quarter of a mile from the crossing there is a very long steep hill rising from the river. KY 22 and KY 159 are the two highways that cross the river at Shoemakertown. KY 159 is the one that goes up the high hill from Shoemakertown and probably where George and Bess lived. KY 22 runs along the east river bank for some distance before it climbs up over the hill also. I have done lots of work on the Falmouth Outlook and seem to remember something about George running for some office. The only reason I would have had an interest in him was because he and Bess lived across the street from us in Sunrise, KY in 1948-49 or about then when he operated the Sunrise Roller Mill which was next to our property in Sunrise. He took great pride in growing tomatoes with no seed in them. When the plants bloomed he had to paint the flowers with some liquid which kept the plant from producing seed in the tomatoes. After the mill closed they moved away and I forget where they went. There was a family with the surname of Shoemaker and I assume that the town got it name from that family. Good luck with your searching. You could check the Falmouth Outlook in 1925 issues to see if there is anything about him running for office. The papers exist on Microfilm at the Pendleton Co. Library as well as other places. To bad the subject line showed PRESTONs instead of PARSONS Doug Harper Biloxi, MS

    1. PRESTONs in "Shoemaker Town"
    2. Is there anyone who can give me some information of any kind (general or otherwise) about an area of Falmouth called "Shoemaker Town?" In the 1920s, my great-uncle, George Greene (or Green) PARSONS had a flour or grist mill on the banks of the Licking River, and the family lived up on a hill in "Shoemaker Town." In fact, at the bottom of that same hill, the Parsons ran a little grocery store back then and sold some of the flour they produced at the mill. There is a family rumor that in about 1925 George G. Parsons ran for sheriff of the area. We don't know if he won or not, or even if this rumor is true. In 1906, George Green Parsons (1883-1955) was married to Sarah Elizabeth "Bess" Preston (1886-1977), and they had the following children (spouses in parentheses): 1. Mary Lee "Mamie" "Pete" Parsons, (Carl Herbert Hatley), b. 1907, d. 1998 2. Anna Elizabeth "Bud" Parsons (Ralph William Fossett & Charles J. Klaber), b. 1910, d. 2001 3. Ethel B. Parsons (William McKinley Williams), b. 1914, d. 1997 4. George Frederick "Jack" Parsons (Virginia Peale) Still Living 5. Clara Virginia "Jenny" Parsons (James Edward Rawlings), Still Living 6. Roy Carlton Parsons (Mildred Loreander Hudson), Still Living I would surely be thrilled with any information you could come up with! And thanks! Falmouth Outlook Fri. 1 Aug 1924 Vol. 18 No. 9 Pg. 8 Col. 1 Kelat Items The Ku Klux Klan of Pendleton and adjacent counties held a monster meeting at Falmouth Fair Grounds last Saturday night. People gathered in from the four corners of the globe until there were five or six thousand assembled. Although a little chilly, yet Old Probs gave the people a rea good evening. There was plenty to eat and to drink in the booths, refreshing and innocent. Every fellow seemed to be in perfect good humor, one with another, and not a disturbance of any kind was noticed. There was nothing loud nor boisterous, the hooded knights being not only gentlemanly but very attentive in directing the coming and going of autos. Everything was pretty well systematized. The Sunrise brass band furnished the music for the occasion and the boys played well, particularly for a young band. After an address to the public the hooded knights, headed by the band, followed by a drum corps marched entirely around the race track. There were nearly 1000 hooded in the parade. Although red light candles were placed around the track still torches carried by each individual member would have been better and added greatly to the scene still it was all pretty. ============================== Items of interest to: Doug Harper Biloxi, MS

    2. I noticed your posting about the early families of Pendleton County. Could you check the name of BEAGLE? We know there is a marriage of a LEROY BEAGLE and wife in the 1820's and that they are in teh Falmouth area on Census for 1850, 1860, 1870, etc. His wife was SARAH PORTER. Could you see if there is anything on these surnames? I am in no hurry. I would be glad to pay copy and postage charges. Thanks in advance. Karen BEAGLE

    3. My parents,1901-94 and 1898-2000 used to tell me of President Coolege's son 's [unnessary?] death. They were trying to train the athletic me to watch small injuries to my feet. They said he had a blister on his foot, and they alwas mentioned colored socks, and how 1 drop of alcohol at the right time,or a wound dressing, would have saved his life. He,and their 1st 40+ years was before antibiotocs. Dad got pneumonia the 1945-46 winter, and his cousin, old Dr Davison, had us switch to Mom's cousin, young Dr Charles Simmons, who had just been trained in antibiotics.Dec 1945. Yet today,I walk a lot on the berm of Ohio Rt 125,and wearclean, white socks, and nightly inspect my feet. 2. Dear Doug: I want to thank you again for publishing all those newspaper mentions on this site. Bless your heart! From the ones of the Merrills you posted a few weeks ago, I found out that our John Samuel Merrill had more than one wife and children we didn't know anything about. Thank you again! Diane R.

It is not only a home for but a boon to suffering humanity. We will go further, by saying it is one of the coziest and best equipped hospitals in the state. It has a large number of well furnished rooms and one of the best operating rooms we know of, not even excelled in large cities. The building is splendidly located on high land, easy of access. As to the nurses, this hospital has a great bunch of them and all splendid ladies trying to do all they can to alleviate the suffering of humanity. The nurses are Mrs. McMurtry (head nurse), Miss Dickey, Miss Conyers, Miss Layman, Miss Bailey, Miss Cronk, Miss Harney, Mrs. Morgan (special) and Mrs. Fields (special) - quite an array, you see, of cheerful workers, to whom many owe "heaps" of thanks.
