Falmouth Outlook Volume 13 Number 36 13 Feb 1920 Pg. 3 Col. 3 Henry F. "Tub" Fowler Long article about Henry F. "Tub" Fowler, distiller. d. 20 years ago in distillery in Falmouth Quote from the article that was originally in the Cynthiana Democrat by E.B.L. A unique character was Henry F. Fowler, who, from his skill as presiding genius at the mash tubs of numerous old-time distilleries, was popularly given the sobriquet of "Tub" Fowler. By many he was also addressed as "Captain." As a maker of the famous sour mash, straight copper whisky he had no superior and as long as he was physically able to keep on foot his services were in demand. An "Old Tub Fowler" brand of straight product and an "Old Tub Fowler" distillery derived their names from him. In the early fall of '62 "Captain" Fowler joined the retiring Confederate forces on the return march southward, driving his splendid four-horse team with a load of supplies unless my memory is at fault. Word had been sent out that teams and wagons to haul out supplies were in demand and would be well paid for. Several Harrison County men bit and presumption was that they lost out to the value of their entire outfits, no inconsiderable amount. Captain Fowler made the entire trip and remained in the transportation service until the Confederate collapse in April 1865 Worn and weary, thin and wan, minus his former avoirdupois, apparently defeated and low in spirit, his return was in marked contrast to his going. His family had received letters from him it seemed, but no word had he received from home, hence his natural anxiety as to their welfare and whereabouts. Mail frequently slipped in via the underground system from the boys in the South, but it was rare for letters from home to reach them. Letters from the northern prisons came unsealed usually, and some of those handled by our office at Oddville were considered neighborhood property and the contents as to good or bad news were soon known. At the noon hour the table was spread with everything that was good to eat and everyone present did his share in helping to devour the good things. Mrs. Whalen is a devoted wife and mother of 13 children, nine of whom are still living; 44 grandchildren, and 40 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Whalen was in the flood of July 10, 1849, at Foster, KY, where there were nine persons killed, four being from the Smalley family, brothers and sisters of Mrs. Whalen. She and one of her other sisters sat astride the comb of their barn and owing to that their lives were saved. She married Mr. Whalen and came to Harrison county, where she helped her husband to clear their ground and build a log hut which they occupied until they made enough to build themselves a fine home where they now reside and are surrounded with every comfort of an up-to-date farmer. Those that were present to help make merry on this occasion were: Mr. & Mrs. Allie Whalen and two daughters, Cynthia and Gertie; Mr. & Mrs. John Ecker, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Price, Mrs. Matt Barns, Miss Annie Arnold, Sam, Riley and Leslie Eckler; Stanley Blackburn and Golf Arnold. All left at a late hour, wishing the old lady many more happy birthdays. Her husband will celebrate his 85th birthday April 6, 1920, if the Lord is willing. Dear List: Some of my Merrill relatives were from an area that was evidently close to Falmouth -- McKenneysburg -- because that place has been mentioned a number of times in the Falmouth Outlook. I've looked on numerous maps but haven't been able to find it. Does anyone know exactly where McKenneysburg was? I thank you in advance for any info. And, I want to thank Doug Harper again for all the time and effort he puts in to sharing his newspaper articles and info with us. Blessings upon you, Mr. Harper! Diane

On April 17 Mary Littleton asked for information proving that Robert Barnhill (1790-1872) was the father of Samuel Barnhill (1820-1889). I have seen a deed with this information; see below. I am interested in Robert Barnhills son, Robert Barnhill Jr., who married Nancy Shoemaker (daughter of Benjamin Shoemaker and Catherine Ellis Young, widow of Henry Young and mother of Samuel Lockwood Young all of Pendleton County.) Besides the Young family I am also interested in Catherine Ellis father William Ellis (b. ca. 1780, Revolutionary war veteran). There is a deed (Family History Library film # US/CAN 1843014) in Deed Book V, page 289 that shows 34 acres on Ash Run Creek in Pendleton Co sold by Robert and Nancy (Shoemaker) Barnhill for $1360 to Nancys ½-brother Samuel Young. There is also a deed (FHL film # US/CAN 1843014) in Deed Book V, page 290-291, showing land on Gibson Creek being transferred on 12 Jul 1871 from Samuel and Nancy Barnhill of Pendleton Co to Nancy Barnhill which mentions all of the interest the said Samuel Barnhill has in his fathers estate originally received by deed by Robert Barnhill who originally acquired the land from William Ellis. (Note that William Ellis is the father of Catherine Ellis Shoemaker). I would be interested in all of the information you have on these families. Thank you! Vicki Young Albu
1861: May 1: Gov. Magoffin having asked the governors of Indiana and Ohio to "cooperate with him in a proposition to the government at Washington for peace, by the border states, as mediator between the contending parties;" and further -- through Col. Thos. L. CRITTENDEN as his representative, who went to Cincinnati to meet them -- having "solicited their co-operation in an effort to bring about a truce between the general government and the seceded states, until the meeting of congress in extraordinary session, in the hope that the action of that body may point out the way to a peaceful solution of our national troubles;" Gov. Wm. DENNISON, of Ohio, replies that, "believing the general government to be wholly in the right, he can see no reason for the interposition suggested; any other peaceful solution is impossible, that the return of the seceded states to their allegiance to the government of the Union; a truce would only aggravate the impending evils." Gov. O. P. MORTON, of Indiana, replies that he does "not recognize the right of any state to act as mediator between the federal government and a rebellious state; he declines the co-operation sought for, believing the action of the federal government strictly in accordance with the constitution and the law of the land; he believes Kentucky bound to obey the requisitions of the president, and invokes her to take her stand with Indiana, on the side of the Union." May 4: -- Special election for delegates to the Border State convention: "Union" ticket: John J. CRITTENDEN, James GUTHRIE, R.K. WILLIAMS, Archie DIXON, Francis M. BRISTOW, Joshua F. BELL, Chas. A. WICKLIFFE, George W. DUNLAP, Chas. S. MOREHEAD, Jas. F. ROBINSON, John B. HUSTON, Robert RICHARDSON -- elected, without opposition, receiving 107,334 votes in 105 counties. No returns from five counties: Ballard, Hickman, Marshall, Simpson, and Woodford. May 6: Gov. MAGOFFIN's message "renews the recommendation of a previous message, for the passage of a law providing for the submission to the people of the question of a convention, and the election of delegates;" says "the very homes and firesides of our people are unprotected against invasion from without or servile insurrection within;" the people appeal for arms; he recommends the necessary measures to place the commonwealth in a condition of military defense.
Hello everyone! While reading Doug's posts of the Falmouth Outlook and seeing the mention of the Klu Klux Klan several times I'm wondering if there is a membership list somewhere? I have a few Pendleton family members who have disappeared from the face of the earth during the late 1870s and 1880s. Just thought I would try anything I could. Thank you! jamie in california

My 3rd great-grandfather was John Ewing who settled in the area during the late 18th century. His son Ben Taylor Ewing is a direct ancestor and a farmer in what is now known as Morgan. My great-grandfather and Ben's son, John James Ewing, served the Confederacy in the 4th Kentucky Cavalry until wounded and captured sometime during Morgan's last raid into Kentucky. I have heard that there was a photograph of John James and others published in the Falmouth newspaper. Can someone please direct me in how to go about obtaining copies of that article, and possible obituaries of Ben Taylor (d. June 1880) and his wife Eleanor (d. Jul 1876). Any help regarding this and any other anecdotes of this family would be much appreciated.
Doug: Have been reading your Outlook posting for some time as my kin folk came from Pendleton Co. Finally found a familiar name of a distant relative, the Tribute to Katherine Regan. Will keep reading your postings in the hope that information on her sister, Mrs. H.C. Fossett (Mrs. Harvey) (Laura Belle Regan) will appear. Have not been able to trace her since this event in West Virginia. Keep up the good work. Bob Regan Miami, FL
