Ida May Blades James Franklin Blades James E. Blades James E. Blades, one of the city's venerable and highly respected citizens, died last Saturday morning at his home on West Shelby Street, after an extended illness. Mr. Blades was born October 22, 1841, hence was 78 years old. The place of his birth was near Willow, in Bracken county. He was the son of Mr. & Mrs. Jehu Blades, and his mother died when he was but two weeks old. Mr. Blades' father later removed to Iowa, and the son was adopted and reared to young manhood by his uncle and aunt, Mr. & Mrs. William Regan. When 16 years old, Mr. Blades left the home of his foster parents, and went to Leon, Iowa, making his home for several years with his brother-in-law Mr. & Mrs. John Brown, father of Carlos Brown, of this city. After two years stay in Iowa, Mr. Blades returned to Kentucky and located near Kelat where he taught school for a number of years. Mr. Blades was married to Miss Cynthia Jane Cummins of Harrison Co. They then located on a farm near Neave, Bracken County, where Mr. Blades engaged in extensively in tobacco growing and stock raising. About the year 1876 he bought a farm near Anticoh Mills where he remained for two years, and in 1878 he moved to this city and engaged in the grocery business, in partnership with J. U. Ruggles in the building now occupied by Sol Goldberg's shoe store. The grocery business was very successful and in a few years Mr. Blades entered the local tobacco trade, and for thirty years was an extensive handler of leaf tobacco.. So keen was his business judgement that he is probably the only tobacco dealer that ever went through the trying days without financial reverses. Mr. Blades wife died November 30, 1904. He united in marriage to Miss Lena McKenney, of this city, in December 1905 and to this union two children were born, Ida May and James Franklin who with his wife survive. Mr. Blades was the youngest of four children. The other children were Jefferson, John W. and Sarah Blades all of whom have long since passed away. Carlos Brown of this city is Mr. Blades closest relative outside the immediate family. Mr. Brown is the son of Mr. Blades only sister, Sarah E. Blades-Brown. During Mr. Blades forty-five years residence in Falmouth, he has been one of the leading business spirits of the city. He served as director and President of the Pendleton Bank for many years. He was a life-long member of the Baptist Church and a member of the Orion Lodge Nol. 222, F & A. M. and also took an active interest in the affairs of h church and lodge. By good business judgement and frugal habits, Mr. Blades accumulated a big fortune, and at the time of his death was probably the wealthiest man in Pendleton Co. His remarkable success demonstrates the fact that it doesn't matter so much what a man makes but what he saves. When a yound man he worked on a farm in Kansas for 20 cents a day and made it a rule to save a certain portion of his wages. This habit he continued through his life. The funeral services were held from the Baptist Church Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. R. H. Toll assisted by Rev. O. J. Steger and Rev. C. P. Pilow. He was buried in Riverside Cemetery with Masonic honors. Falmouth Outlook Volume 13 Number 46 23 Apr 1920 Pg. 1 Col. 2 Riley, Mrs. Rose d. 12 Apr 1920 bur. Falmouth Outlook Volume 13 Number 44 9 Apr 1920 Pg. 1 Col. 1 The First Commencement The Morgan High School placed itself on the map in a very definite way when it held its first high school commencement, Thursday April 1st. This school was established five years ago by the voters of the district, who elected one of the most modern school buildings in Northern Kentucky. A Freshman Class in high school was enrolled the first year and it was the hope of the Board of Education that they might be able to establish a first class high school in four years. But they had a struggle against odds for a time and did well to "hold their own" and in the meantime the first class was scattered until none were left. The second class enrolled was the class who received their diplomas this year. Not all, however, of the original number took their diplomas here as some have moved away and are in school elsewhere. Neither time nor money was spared to make the Commencement exercises a success. The church was artfully decorated with ferns and potted plants, and the class motto "Pluck" was daintily arranged with class colors – pink and green. Elegant music was furnished for the occasion by a trio from the Cincinnati College of Music. After the salutation "Stepping Stones to Success" and the valedictory "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow" both splendid orations had been given by members of the class, Prof. J. T. C. Noe delivered an excellent class address which was much appreciated by the entire audience. Following the class address, George Howe President of the Board of Education presented diplomas to Emma Kate Douglass and Anna Minerva Rigg. Other members who will graduate this year are: Nancy Arnold, Falmouth; Margaret Aulick, Mt. Healthy, OH; and Francis Aulick, Midway. The Morgan School has been under the supervision of D. H. Norris since it was established. Miss Blanche Howe has assisted in the high school for the past two years. After making extensive investigation she says in a page article in the New York Sun and Herald a few days ago: "From the census report in 1840 down to the present time and other evidences, I find that old man Shell was born in Knox county, Tennessee, ninety eight years ago. He knows little or nothing about his age. He is feebleminded and lived in most humble circumstances, His eldest child is seventy-five while the youngest is only four years of age. The appearance of this old man at the many fairs in the State was schemed by friends near his home in order that they might procure bushels of money for hi, but instead Mr. Shell claims that he received only $199 of the proceeds." Miss Bessie Cummins and Mr. Justice Gardner were united in marriage Sunday afternoon, March 21, 1920 at Stony Castle near Berry the Rev. S.H. Burgess officiating in his ususal impressive manner, making the twain one. Miss Bessie is one of Pendleton's fairest and sweetest young ladies - a bunch of smiles - and the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Ora Price. Mr. Justice Gardner, of near Kelat, is a son of the late Jas. Gardner, and a most excellent, industrious young man. The nuptial ceremonies were witnessed by the bride's parents and several near friends. Soon after the marriage, the happy young couple left for Cincinnati, later going to Ft. Recovery, OH to visit Mrs. Elmer Moore a sister of the groom. What can be more pleasing to contemplate than a happy union of two ripe, rich, congenial and loving hearts, satisfied and cemented in a through understanding of each other and a perfect adaptation to each other, in the well adjusted bonds of holy wedlock? God and nature approve the match and endless blessings will doubtless crown these nuptials. Our best wishes to with them. Rueben McCarty's experiences in the massacre of the River Raisin, which appeared in last week's Outlook, has been received most enthusiastically. Several men from Pendleton County were with Col. Whitney's command at Raisin, and many of our families point with pride to their gallant forbears who fought at the Raisin. One of our readers has volunteered another interesting story, this one concerning Lieut.-Col. James Browning, a native of Pendleton County, who was on the staff of Col. Wm. Whitney. Mr. Browning was released by the Indians and returned to his old home several years after the close of the war. He resided many years on Big Willow Creek, on the farm known as the Sam Galloway place. Mr. Browning later sold his farm and removed to another on Richland Creek, and now known as the John Moore place. He lived there the remainder of his life. His remains are buried in the burying plot on the place. Mr. Browning was a volunteer, and served as Lieutenant Colonel on the commander's staff. He saw service in the fierce battles with the British and Indians, and was with the regiment when they reached the River Raisin. Col. Browning was among the few who escaped the tomahawk of the Indians, when the British left the unarmed prisoners to the mercy of their savage captors. The prisoners, according to the story told by Colonel Browning, were confined in a stockade, the wounded ones being sheltered in a blockhouse. The wounded became too much of the care to their captors, and they locked the prisoners in the block house and set fire to it and burned all of them to death. There were some fifteen or twenty who were spared for torture at the great feast of victory of the redskins. Not only were they made to run the gauntlet, but they were subjected to every kind of torture the savage minds of the Indians could conceive. Those who could not stand the ordeals were killed with the tomahawk. One of the methods of torture was accomplished by scraping the skin from the prisoner's arms with a sharp tomahawk and then rubbing hot wood ashes and salt in the wounds, to make them more painful. According to the story of this old warrior, he had witnessed the prisoners, bound and gagged, undergo this fearful torture without a flinch though the pain was terrible. Some even laughed at the savages, which elicited their respect, for there was nothing the Indian admired more than courage, and nothing he detested more than cowardice and weakness. Some of the prisoners could not withstand the ordeal, and they were killed and scalped by the Indians. One story that Col. Browning loved to tell was of an occasion when the prisoners were lined up on the ice of the frozen river, objects of torture for the Indian squaws, who would walk up and down the line, pinching them and otherwise torturing them. The young braves who guarded them flung taunts at the prisoners for allowing themselves to become captives. One of the squaws walked up to Col. Browning, who was standing near the center of the line, and in full view of a number of the braves, and almost pinched a piece our of his arm. He quickly decided that he would endure this humiliation no longer, and as the squaw started away, he gave her a kick, which sent her sliding across the ice for fifteen or twenty feet. The braves who were standing near, threw up their hands and with shouts ran toward the prisoner. He thought that they were going to tomahawk him, and closed his eyes that he might not see their savage, painted faces as they bore down upon him. To his surprise they came up and slapped him on the back and called him "brave paleface." Col. Browning remained a prisoner of the Indians for many months, but always after this incident he was shown the greatest respect and escaped many of the ordeals which his less fortunate companions were obliged to endure. When Col. Browning returned from the war he possessed a number of trophies, which he prized very highly. He was a highly respected citizen and was one of the sturdy men of the time when Pendleton County was a wilderness. The story of Col. Browning is well authenticated by traditions handed down by the members of the family to the present day. Dear Doug: Another interesting tidbit about some of the Merrills/Merrells. Thank you again for posting all of this info from the Falmouth Outlook. There must have been some kind of epidemic going around at that time in 1920. I think that is the third Merrell/Merrill I've come across who died within that week, two of them as young as this Mrs. Thomas Merrell. Diane

Falmouth Outlook Volume 13 Number 41 19 Mar 1920 Pg. 1 Col. 7 Will Bring Back Kentucky Flag State to send James Buchanan to England to Bring Back Battle Flag lost at River Raisin by Kentuckians Historical Event Recalled Capt. Reuben McCarty, Falmouth Man, was Among the few who escaped Massacre The Kentucky General Assembly last week appropriated expenses for James Buchanan, Louisville, who has been chosed to go to England and bring back the battle flag lost by the Kentucky volunteers in the battle of the Thames, in Michigan, in the War of 1812. This battle is commonly known among students of history as the "Massacre of the River Raisin." The flag was taken by the British forces, and has since been among the trophies of was by the British Government. Story of the Raisin Massacre A force of American troops, numbering about 300, met the combined forces of the British and Indians at the Thames. The Americans were hopelessly outnumbered in both men and arms, and, under the promise that they would be protected from massacre by the Indians, surrendered to the British commander. As soon as they were deprived of their arms and equipments, the British left the scene, and the Indians fell upon the unarmed men and killed and scapled all save the few, some sixteen or seventeen, who ran the gauntlet, and were sapred their lived, althought they were not released by the redskins. Captain McCarty Escapes Among those who ran the gauntlet was Reuben McCarty, a Captain of the Regiment, under command of Col. Wm. WHitney. Captain McCarty volunteered at Falmouth, and had been with the Regiment through its many thrilling experiences. He plotted with an Indian woman (for he spoke the language of the redskins fluently), and through her aid escaped from the palisade where he was confined. Unarmed save for the captain's sword he carried, Captain McCarty plunged into the unbroken, treacherous forest, and started southward for his native home. He had many thrilling escapes from capture by hostile Indians, yet he was able to procure substance necessary to sustain him, and he made the entire trip afoot. When Captain McCarty reached home on the farm now owned by Walter Sharp. near Wagoner's Ferry, his clothes were in tatters, and his hair and beard had grown so long that he was not recognized by the members of his own family. They first thought him a begger, and it was only after hearing his voice that they recognized him. Becomes Leading Citizen Later Captain McCarty became a leading and influential citizen of Falmouth. He built the hose adjacent to the Christian Chruch, now owned by Miss Olive Mulins, and lived there with his family until his death. Active in Masonica Work Captain McCarty was a charter member of McKenney Lodge, F.&A.M., which was organized in 1835, and was its first Secretary. Captain McCArtyu wrote the by-laws of McKenney Lodge and kept an elaborate record of all its proceedings. Later, when the name of the Lodge was changed to Orion, his name appears as Secretary, and he served in many other useful capacities as well. The writing of Captian McCarty on these records is a model for faultless penmanship. It is an inspiration to any one who aspired to perfection in this art. The writing is remarkably uniform, even though it covers a long period of years. Captain McCarty, we are told, used a quill pen, the modern pen not having been invented at that time. These records are among the cherished relics in the archives of Orion Lodge. The sword which Captain McCarty carried through all his service to his country he presented to Orion Lodge. It is used by the Tiler in the discharge of his duties. Captian McCarty was a grandfather of Mrs. Lucy Swoope, who now resided in Cincinnati, and she possesses many historical records of the experiences of his distinguished forbear. The remains of Captain McCarty are buried in Riverside Cem. Falmouth Outlook Volume 13 Number 41 19 Mar 1920 Pg. 1 Col. 7 McCarty, Captain Reuben bur. Riverside Cem. Especially do I enjoy recalling the scenes and incidents of my boyhood days in and around old Antioch, as it was first called. When the post office was established it became necessary to change the name, so it became Antioch Mills, which name was legitimate and appropriate, because of the old grist mill that stood west of the church across the creek. There was the old log schoolhouse, which I think was earlier been the church or meeting house. ..." "Among the families represented in the school were the Woolerys, Brannocks, Cummins, Simpsons, Whitakers, Nesbits, Sellers, Blades and others." "Faces and forms of some of the older teachers pass in panoramas before memory's vision such as John W. Bristow, Rufus Masonry, Haviland Weeks, Joseph Norris, _.W. Wright, T.J. Smith and later the Rev. J. W. B. Smith. All of these teachers, except perhaps the latte, resorted frequently to the use of the switch to impress on our minds the importance of right conduct and diligent application of our minds to our books. I can almost feel the sting of the switch on my back yet. "I note in your news columns that the church at Antioch Mills has been remodeled and that they how have a fine up-to-date church. It is very gratifying to know that interest in the church is still at high tide. I remember at one time when the Antioch S.S. under the leadership of Supt. Z. M. KY, is the oldest man in the world. He tells a newspaper reporter that he distinctly remembers Washington's illness and death and many other events of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Uncle John was born in 1788, and was 73 years old when the Civil War broke out in 1861. He tried to enlist, but was rejected on account of his age. Another startling fact concerning Uncle John is that he has a boy five years old. Uncle John is either the wonder of the age, has some awfully good neighbors or Burbank has been doing some grafting. Mr. Regan is a veteran of the Mexican War, and is one of the few of these old veterans living today. He fought in the principal battles of the Mexican War, and lot an arm in one of them. Mr. Regan is 94 years old, but is till in good health and keeps informed of the current topics of the day. He comes down town when the weather permits, and walks with a spring in his heel equal to a man of fifty. He bids fair to grind out the century mark.
