    3. Bobby Hunt, Re: florence - morris - peddicord - ammerman - pettit - angell - vendler - fryman - cook - hukill - northcutt I am a descendant of Jeremiah Highfill (Highfield/Hyfield) who moved from Maryland to Kentucky shortly before 1790. He and his descendants lived there, including in Pendleton County, and later moved to southern Indiana. His son, Jeremiah and his wife, Mary Taylor (a daughter of Robert Taylor of Pendleton County), moved from southern Indiana to Vermillion County, Indiana, in the mid-1820's. Their son, Thomas (my ancestor), moved from Vermillion County to Scott County, Arkansas, late in 1840, following the parents of his wife, Mary Jane Hunt, and other kinspersons. Mary Jane's parents, Daniel Hunt and Mary "Polly" Wiseman had migrated to Scott County in the mid- to late 1830's from Orange County, Indiana. I am searching for information relating to the elder Jeremiah Highfill and his children and their lines. Jeremiah Highfill's children intermarried, in and around Pendleton County, with the Ammermans, the Petits, and perhaps others among the surnames you listed in your note. The ties to the Hunts are quite strong as well. Will Highfill williamhighfill@charter.net

Falmouth Outlook Volume 14 Number 29 31 Dec 1920 Pg. 1 Col. 1 Banks make announcement The Pendleton and Citizens banks of this city are making an announcement that is of special interest to the people of Pendleton County. Beginning with the new year these two local banks will pay 3 per cent interest on savings accounts and 4 per cent on time certificates. This is the most liberal offer ever made by any bank in Pendleton county, and it shows that they want to keep abreast of the most attractive and liberal methods in banking, We make the assertion that there is not a bank in the State that is more liberal with its customers than our two local banks. Mr. Elliott is well qualified for the place and would make a dandy officer. He is well known throughout the country and has a large following who are urging him to throw his old hat into the ring. A party of friends gave Miss Della Hill a birthday surprise luncheon the other evening at the cozy home of Mr. & Mrs. Sam Martin. A large number of the boys and girls were present, each vying with the other to make the occasion one of delight and memorable as well. Miss Della was just sweet sixteen and had never been ........(but our better half here interferes, hence the unfinished sentence.) Anyway, a right good time was had, each of the guests enjoying the evening to the fullest. Miss Della is deservedly popular and has hosts of friends and admirers. The many friends of Early Cummins, of near Antioch Mills, are trying to induce him to make the race for judge of Pendleton county. Early is a thorough going farmer, one that has made good, and is fully capable of filling the office to the credit of himself and constituency. The time has come for agriculture to be recognized in the affairs of the country. We are having too much legislation and not enough impartial rendering of right and wrong. Mr. Cummins would make a good judge, one hat would be fair to all classes. ============================== Items of interest to: Doug Harper Biloxi, MS

Wilson Falmouth Outlook Volume 14 Number 28 17 Dec 1920 pg. 7 Col. 3 Story of the Rebellion At the time Confederate General, Kirby Smith, threatened an invasion of Cincinnati during the Civil War, home guards were organized in the vicinity of the city both in Ohio and Kentucky and were called the "Squirrel Hunters." Because many of them consisted of old-time farmers armed with rifles which they were accustomed to hunting squirrels and other game with. If the Confederates had not retired they might have received the same reception the Colonial squirrel hunters handed the British at Lexington, or Jackson's Squirrel Hunters dished out at New Orleans in 1812. The squirrel hunters were entrenched back of Covington and had a company of regulars on the picket line. They responded to the Confederate fire right sharply, and believing the Union forces stronger than they really were the Confederates retired. I have since talked with some of the Squirrel Hunters and they told me that the Confederates could have easily defeated them had they come on. A number of laughable incidents are recorded in the history of Ohio. There was a man who lived in Cincinnati at the time who possessed considerable military knowledge and he was appointed commander of the Ohio forces. He stammered very badly, and more so under excitement. He declined and asked to serve as a private. He was asked why he refused to serve in the capacity of commander, as he was the most eligible man for the place. The gentleman said: "You ought to have sense enough to know that the soldiers would all walk into the river before I could say h-h-h-alt." They gave him a gun and picked another man for commander. T. Mr. LaForce, the only son of Joseph Howard and Susan Woodyard LaForce was born in Harrison county near Berry, July 22, 1847. At the age of ten years he was deprived of his mother by death, and at the outbreak of the Great Rebellion, a lad of fourteen years, he cast his lot with the Union Cause. He enlisted under Col. Landrum, then stationed at Cynthiana, and had his first experience of real war when Col. Landrum's forces were completely routed by Gen. John Morgan's men in Morgan's first fight at Cynthiana. Later he was transferred to Sherman's command and served throughout his southern Campaign, Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge being among the battles in which he participated. After the close of the war, at the age of eighteen, he entered high school at Xenia, OH, from which he graduated June 26, 1868, later entering law college at Delaware, Ohio and graduated at the age of 22 years. But because of ill health he was forced to give up his law practice, and taking his physician's advice returned to the farm, at which occupation he continued until 1897, when he came to Cynthiana and in 1902 was appointed carrier on R.F.D. No. 2, serving until placed on the retired list, August 20, 1920. On March 23, 1876, he was married to Miss Frances Zuern, of Pendleton County, who survives him, with two sons, Leon Laforce of Cynthiana and Horatius LaForce, of San Francisco, Calif. and one daughter Miss Era LaForce of Cynthiana. An only sister, Mrs. D.H. LeFevre, resides in Springfield, Ohio. His eldest daughter, Anna Josphine, died February 17, 1899. In early manhood he professed Christian faith and continued a firm believer in that faith throughout his life. He was a member of the Cynthiana Baptist Church at the time of his death with which church he united in 1899. Beginning with the Revolution some of his blood kin have participated in each war of the Republic, which fact in part would probably account for his intense patriotism and love for his country. Strong in his convictions and outspoken in his opinions, his path was not always smooth, but he commnaded the respect and friendship of those who knew him best. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Felix K. Struve, at the home on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock. Burial at Battle Grove cemetery. Sunday Santa Fe Falmouth Outlook Volume 14 Number 20 22 Oct 1920 Pg. 1 Col. 4 Birthday surprise Sunday was indeed the ending of a perfect day for two brothers, J.P. and V.A. Martin, it being the former's 58th birthday anniversary and the latter's 54th. Unknown to them, their children and relatives arranged for a surprise dinner at the beautiful country home of J.P. Martin, which proved a success by the clever way in which it was carried out, both in the enjoyable day spent and in the great abundance of good things to eat, prepared by real artists in the culinary line. After the remains of the feast had been cleared away, the afternoon was spent mainly in pleasant conversation on the present and past event, with the addition of music and the singing of several beautiful hymns. Later in the afternoon ice-cream and cake were served, after which the guest departed wishing Messrs. Martin many more happy birthdays.
