    2. Falmouth Outlook Friday 20 May 1921 Vol. 14 No. 50 Pg. 1 Col. 1 Struck Gas The oil well being drilled on the farm of Less Arnold, across the river from the Fair Grounds by Mr. Caldwell, has reached a depth of 250 feet and work is progressing nicely. Mr. Cox, of Cynthiana, is doing the drilling and seems to be an expert at the business. At the depth of 180 feet a good flow of gas was struck and it is strong enough to be heard escaping several feet from the well. Mr. Cox was badly burned on his hand, arm and face Saturday when he attempted to light his pipe some distance from the well. The well caught on fire and it was extinguished before it burned the cable. Steam had to be used to extinguish the blaze. No one is now allowed to go about the well while smoking. An auditorium gymnasium is also planned in the original structure. This building is designed according to the latest ideas in school house design. 3. Hi, I'm looking for an obituary for Harmon/Herman Greb. I don't know his exact death date, somewhere between 1935 & 38. The gravestone in Riverside cemetery does not have the final date carved, just 19__, I'm not sure if he died in Kentucky or while staying with his daughter and son-in-law in New York state. They were Alby Stauffer and Anna Greb Stauffer. I would appreciate any help. Thank you Dolores

    3. Hello, I am seeking information on my ggggrandfather, Reuben Kemp. He moved to what was then Bourbon County around 1792 as he and his brother Edward appear on the tax list for that year. His daughter Elizabeth married Elijah McClenahan in 1793 and Reuben is said to have built the first jail in Pendleton County. Reuben was also said to have been a blacksmith and he did have 700# iron bar in the inventory of his estate when he died in 1807. Around 1799, he sold two lots in Falmouth to William Downard and I believe because of that he may have lived in Falmouth and might be buried in the old cemetery. I would be glad to have the name of a paid or volunteer researcher that I could contact to learn more about him and his son, Charles. I would also be glad to share what I know about them. Sincerely, Charles Kemp Warren, MI 48092 cvkwrn@msn.com

    2. Vernon Purvis
    3. Western Argus August 6, 1892 AN APPALLING RECORD! ............. Of Crime in Pendleton County, Kentucky! ........... Has it an Equal Anywhere? FALMOUTH, Ky., Oct. 4: The Farmers' Alliance organizations in this country participated in a big blow out and political jamboree at Goforth, a small place, about ten miles west of Falmouth. Political spirits ran high, but spirits frumenti ran higher, it seems. Some noted local toughs were on hand, well primed for an encounter. Tom Arnold, a son of a respectable and well - to - do farmer, became involved in a difficulty with Robert Jones, a noted tough, who has been before the criminal court quite often within the last ten years. Jones was badly shot by Arnold, but may live. During the excitement Robert Asberry, a well - to - do farmer from Gum Lick, was fatally shot, dying within a few hours. Asberry was a bystander, and it appeared that some enemy seized the opportunity to shoot him. John Laudrain, another tough, who carries already the brand of a murderer, is suspected of the crime as he was seen with a pistol about the time the shooting was done. All parties are married men, except Tom Arnold. Asberry leaves a large family. No arrests have been made as yet. This makes the second murder that has been committed within the boarders of Pendleton county within twenty-four hours, and two other men are lying at the point of death as a result of their experience within the same time. Briefly reviewed, Pendleton county has a dark and most shameful criminal record. Within the last two years, murders, almost countless, have been committed within her borders - assignations of the most daring and revolting nature. Marshal Vogelsong shot down at his own gate by here cold blooded assassins, armed with two double barreled shotguns, charged with buckshot. They now serve a life sentence in the Kentucky penitentiary. Lewis Jones, shot down at his place of business in a heartless manner. James Rachford, waylaid and shot as he was returning home late at night. Old man Lowe and wife, Ku-kluxed and shot at their humble home. Nath. Roberts, shot and killed in a drunken brawl on the street here. Mace parker, shot down with a doubled barreled shotgun. Old man Gruelle, taken from home by a masked mob and hanged, and many other crimes and depredations stain her once fair name. The stigma of crime and shame must be lifted from her, and a vigilant, vindictive and fearless prosecution must follow every infraction of law and justice. Retributive justice must be quickly and certainly meted out to every violator and criminal, or we will suffer under the long record of crime. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kenneth Britton" <kennethr.britton47567@lycos.com> To: <KYPENDLE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 01, 2005 11:07 AM Subject: [KYPENDLE] Murder in Pendleton County, KY > Hello List, > > could anyone on this list tell me if they have come across or heard of a murder in Pendleton between 1878-1883 I know this family was in Pendleton County, on the 1880 Census. 1. Baker DNA
    2. James R. Baker, Jr. (jrbakerjr)
    3. Are you a Baker family researcher? If so, I ask you, please, take a DNA test. A larger database is needed, especially for North Kentucky Bakers. So far, in North Kentucky, people who's research indicated that they were descended from the following lines have been tested: 1. The Joshua/Nicholas Baker line from Campbell Co. 2. An unknown Baker family who arrived in Kenton Co. around 1840. 3. The Andrew Baker family of Grant Co. 4. The Edwin Baker family of Boone Co. 5. The John and Mary (Wason) Baker family of Campbell Co. Only one from each line has been tested. We need more. One big surprise was that the Andrew and Edwin people matched, which means that they have a common Baker Ancestor. The unknown Baker family of Kenton matched the Andrew-John Renta Baker line who are mostly in the Madison Co. area. The cost is about a hundred dollars for the basic 12 marker test, and it's simple. They send you a test kit, you swab the inside of your cheek, put the swab in the bottle and mail it back. They run the lab test and give you a series of 12 markers. If your numbers match someone else's numbers, then you have a common Baker ancestor. This is a Y Chromosome test. The Y Chromosome is passed from father to son, so only a male named Baker can take the test. Female researchers often pay for a male Baker relative to take the test for them. Hundreds of Bakers have been tested. I have no financial interest in this, I'm just an avid Baker researcher who has taken the test. You can find out more here: http://www.bakerdna.net/ Jim . . -------------------------------------------- Free Genealogy Databases http://www.jrbakerjr.com --------------------------------------------

I'm trying to find the death record of Benjamin HENSLEY, who apparently died in Pendleton County between 1860 and 1870. My interest is in seeing who the record says was Benjamin's mother. Benjamin is not my ancestor, but his father, Samuel HENSLEY, might be. Some researchers say that this Samuel HENSLEY, whose will was probated in Pendleton County in 1831, had come from Virginia, leaving a wife and some of his children behind there. I see that the death records on the Pendleton GenWeb site skip the 1860s. Does that mean that death records don't exist for this period? If they do exist, might someone on this e-mail list have ready access to the death records for the 1860s??? (pretty please!) Thank you! Scott Simpson __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
