Looking for the obit for my husband's aunt who passed away on 03/30/2010 in Owsley County, KY. Thanks for your help...Robie
Karen, not sure exactly what your question is. But, if you are looking for a definition only, it means: denotes a person with one white parent and one black parent. Also, a person who has both black ancestry and white ancestry. It was common in slave states, and in particular in the New Orleans/French culture of the 1800s [1] The term may be perceived as pejorative in some cultures and situations.[2] Its current usage varies greatly. If you are asking why Levi Ross' line is classed as Mulatto, well that is anyone's guess.
I am researching the family of Levi Ross and have traced Levi on the census records. I see that his race is noted as "mulatto". Does anyone know about this? Hope to hear from someone. Karen
Thank you very much.. ----- Original Message ----- From: "RMW" ancestorhunt@sbcglobal.net

This book is a replacement for the Owsley County marriage records destroyed in the court house fire of 1929. Approximately 5,000 marriage records were lost. This book contains over 6,500 marriages from the period 1843-1929. Judging from census records about 80% of Owsley marriages are in here. The criteria for inclusion were (1) marriages performed in Owsley (2) marriages performed elsewhere but recorded in Owsley records (3) bride and groom lived in Owsley after marriage elsewhere and (4) marriages of Owsley residents whose later whereabouts are unknown. Grooms' names have been "normalized", thus Newman for Newnam and Caudill for Caudell. The choice was sometimes arbitrary but I tried to use the most common spelling and/or the spelling in the 1994 Booneville telephone directory. My apologies to anyone misspelled. When the date of marriage was lacking, I estimated it as (1) one year before the birth of the eldest child (2) years married from the 1900 census and (3) by the ages of the bride and groom. Any errors here are more likely place the wedding later than the true date due to eldest child dying before the census, etc. I have not given all the sources for the parents' names. When the parents were not listed in the sources for the marriage, they were inferred from census records. Unfortunately very little has been published on Owsley County genealogy and there is no county historical society. The best collections of material are by the brothers James F and Arch B Bowman. I would like very much to hear from anyone who has found sources not listed here for Owsley County genealogy. And of course any additions or corrections to this book. The marriages are given as Groom to Bride, date, place, parents, sources. Thus Roosevelt Abshear to Claris (Clarice) Green, c1925, s/o Jefferson Abshear & Martha Frost, d/o Robert Green & Cora Blake, News 7 Apr 1957, bc Henery C 6-17-30, bc Lena F 12-7-28, bc Robt. J 10-4-26, abb, BS 11 Nov 1993 The place is not known but is presumed to be Owsley. The sources are an article in the Owsley County News 1957, an article in the Booneville Sentinel 1993, a letter from Arch Bowman, and birth records of three of the couple's children. The date of the marriage was estimated from the children's birthdates. (Note for 2nd edition) Thanks to everyone who sent in corrections/additions. This book has also benefited greatly from the state's release of death certificates from 1911-1944. Readers can e-mail corrections/additions to me at <_RLSMITH@IAC.NET_ (mailto:RLSMITH@IAC.NET) >.
