    1. Lazarus BELLs
    2. Norman Gallop
    3. I think that I have found the right mailing list? In my family line there are 6 lads called Lazarus BELL so that when I came across the extract below I thought that there is probably a family link-up here. The early known Lazaruses are located in the Swaledale district of the North Riding of Yorkshire in England in the 18th century and later in the 19th century appear further south in the industrial West Riding. Then of course the BELLs become as mobile as any modern person so some of them might very well have ended up in Kentucky. Perhaps someone who reads this might know something about the Kentucky Lazarus and his family? What do the recurring KYs stand for? 1. Karen Sue Peters -- Jackson County
    2. Ron Rowland
    3. From "The Jackson County Sun", Thursday, November 18, 1971 Booneville, Ky -- The murder trial Junior Neeley, about 40, of Booneville, a former restaurant owner and State Highway Department employee charged with murder in the shotgun death of Karen Sue peters, 17, of Booneville, last March 25, will begin here at 9 a.m. today in Owsley County Circuit Court. The trial had been slated at June term of Owsley County Court but attorneys for the defense claimed Neeley "could not get a fair trial in Owsley County because of the great amount of publicity given with case and because of widespread family connections with high county local official". However, Circuit Judge Earl F. Ashcraft of Irvine overruled the motion and set the trial date for today. The circuit judge cautioned the attorney at that time that the case would be tried at the November term. The slain girl's uncle, Taylor Peters, a deputy sheriff of Owsley county for many years, secured as a special prosecutor in the case a Somerset attorney, Lester H. Burns, Jr., former commonwealth's attorney of Clay, Leslie and Jackson counties. At the time the girl died, Owsley County Coroner Robert Strong ruled the death as "a suicide." He said Miss Peters' death was the result of a .38 caliber bullet wound above the abdomen. An official ruling is still pending. Officials at the Oneida Mountain Hospital, where the girl was taken, alerted stat officials that there might be foul play. At that time, Neeley was place under $25, 000 bound. A warrant for his arrest was obtained by State Detective Bob Morgeson and arrested him. County Judge Elijah Campbell placed bond. The Peters girl was a niece of County Judge Campbell.
