Won't mind either way! Although, I would very much like to see either or both have DIGEST MODE! OF Which CRR doesn't have! Which has a strike against mergering to CRR in my opinion. 3. Hello, everybody! Well, I'll say one thing for you guys...you sure know how to help a girl make a decision! I received SEVERAL responses to my message about combining the four lists and adding any other southeastern Kentucky counties who either want to join or that your lines overlap into. The vote was U N A N I M O U S ! ! ! I've sent Brian a message requesting a SEKY list but I haven't heard back from him yet. Now all this brings up a question about the Cumberland River Region list which includes Whitley, Knox, Wayne, Pulaski, and McCreary counties. I'm sending the listowner, Margy Miles, a copy of this message also to see what she thinks we should do...merge or stay separate?!? There are pros and cons to both and, personally, I can live and be happy either way! Margy and everybody else...your thoughts please! 3. Hello everyone, I am searching for information about an Owsley County man named Hen Davis. Supposedly, he killed my third great-grandfather, Lewellyn Bush, in Wolfe County in 1859. Hen was afterwards killed in Owsley County while robbing a woman during the Civil War. Any information is appreciated. Ken ------------------------------

    3. Folks, I'm truly sorry I have been so...so...well...ABSENT lately. I have just been totally swamped with several other things. And it isn't going to get much better for about 2 more weeks! YUCK. One thing I would like all of you to think about...I've had several of you suggest that we include certain other counties on each of the particular lists. There is just so much overlapping, partly because the county lines kept changing, but mostly because people moved around. I think it would be a good idea to include the other counties. But I think it would be a GREAT idea to have one combined list..... .........maybe called Southeastern Kentucky. The question is....what do you guys think???!!! 1. KY NEWSPAPER OBITUARIES
    2. Hello Fellow KY researchers, I live in Cincinnati, OH. My ancestors are from Lee, Estill, Owsley, Perry, Breathitt, Leslie Co. KY. I recently became a contributor to the 'Obituary Daily Times' newspaper database. If you have never checked out this website, you should give it a look see. Here is the URL: http://www.best.com/~shuntsbe/obituary/ Since becoming a subscriber to this mail list, only 2 weeks now, I have found that these mail groups are made up of generous people. Can anyone spare about 10 to 20 minutes a day to help themselves and others? The Kentucky papers need volunteers!!! I know I would be greatful for the information on a possible relative. I saw someone else post a similar message last week, and thought that I would try pleading with anyone who has access to KY newspapers!!! Check out the site! Please think about it. Once you are a contributor to the database, you can get information on specific obituaries that you are interested in, if the submitter still has the information. What a wonderful resource for all of us!! I am not involved with the Obituary Daily Times in any way other than a contributor. Knowing how much you all care about helping people out, I thought someone would like to be made aware of the need! This message is cross posted to other KY mail lists. 2. Hi KY groups, Thank you to all who have answered my previous posts. I was told of this database. Tiger mapping, USGS. I have a map of Lee County, KY, which my husband copied at the library for me. It listed about 50 or more markings which stood for cemeteries, of family burial plots. I wrote to the Lee Co., KY clerk, with no avail, trying to find out where these were located. Thanks to someone coming through for me, I now have 28 of these locations named. You might want to give this one a try. If you have a map as a reference, but are unable to find a landmark, this URL could save you some aggravation: http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html Once again, thanks everyone for being so helpful. I have truly discovered one of the most friendly and helpful group of people!!! Debbie Birch, Yes, it's raining in Cincinnati, OH TOO!!! 1. Court House Burning
    2. Hello Everyone, My father was born in Heidelberg, Ky in November of 1910. When I was growing up, I remember him telling me that there was no record of his birth because the court house had burned down. I just read this in one of the early issues of the KYRESEARCH mail list, "My main area of research is Owsley County where the courthouse burned in 1929 and all the records were lost...according to the Handy Book for Genealogists, the State Archives, and the courthouse employees.....Robert L. Smith, rlsmith@iac.net." I know that Heidelberg, Ky is in Lee County. Can anyone provide me with any information about a fire to the Lee County Court House? The date? Any old newspaper articles that might have covered it? My father's name was Carl William Begley. Son of Matthew BEGLEY(son of Albert Begley and Mary Warren) and Sarah Jane ESTES(daughter of James Estes and Susan Alice McKinney). My father's siblings were Ruby, Roxie (a.k.a Edna), Martha and Cecil (both passed away before 1920). Do any of these names ring a bell to someone? Any information is greatly appreciated. Wilson 1899 PART 3 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Reprinted with permission of the Laurel County Historical Society from their book "Excerpts from the Mountain Echo 1899" Copyright 1996 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THE EXAMINING TRIAL The defendant, being represented by attorneys R. L. Ewell. D. K. Rawlinys and R. L. Reid, entered a motion before County Judge Stanberry Tuesday morning for bail, and at one o'clock Tuesday afternoon the examining trial began, the Commonwealth being represented by County Attorney Sparks, Senator Parker, Hon. W. H. Ramsey, H.C. Hazelwood, C.R. Brock, and J. Walker Moren. The hearing of testimony was not closed until noon Wednesday, the defense offering not one word of testimony in rebutttal to that of the Commanwealth. After argument by the counsel, Sparks, and Ramsey for the Commonwealth and Ewell and Rawlings for the defense, the motion of the defendant for bail was overruled and the prisoner was remanded to jail without bail. The prisoner was ordered to be taken to Richmond jail for safe keeping. TRIAL NOTES The hearing throughout was a recital of one of the most sickening and shocking crimes ever committed in the county. The trial was witnessed by a large crowd with almost breathless silence, every neck being craned to its full tension that the auditor might hear and catch the full force of every word that fell from the witness lips of the prisoners guilt. Dr. A. C. Foster swears that some three or four weeks since Mr. Wilson came to him and told him that he believed that he had Miss Cloyd pregnant and wanted to know if certain drugs and certain instruments would produce an abortion; if cotton-root pills would, if ergot would, or if a catheter inserted into the uterus would. To all of which Dr. Foster answered in the affirmative. He then asked the doctor to write a prescription. The doctor refused. He then asked the doctor to go with him and use the catheter; to which request the doctor's reply was: "Do you take me to be a d-m fool? I will not do it." He then asked the doctor to loan him his catheter, which request was also refused, but was told that he could buy one at the drug store, that there was no law prohibiting the sale of them, but was told that if he used it in the way indicated, it would kill the giri. Wilson afterward met Dr. Foster and told him that he had used the instrument and that he, Wilson, believed it "had done the work." After the condition of the girl became known, Wilson was called into the girl's sick room, and appealed to by both Mr. and Mrs. McLear, that, for the sake of his honor, the honor of the girl, and the reputation of the house he ought to marry the girl there and then. He declined, but said that he intended and would marry the girl as soon as she was able. He was then appealed to by the ruined girl, to redeem the promise by which he had ruined her, and save her further disgrace. Still he refused. Then when accosted by the girl he acknowledged that he had accomplished her ruin under promise of marriage. 3. ~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ People vs E.K. Wilson 1899 PART 2 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Reprinted with permission of the Laurel County Historical Society from their book "Excerpts from the Mountain Echo 1899" Copyright 1996 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ JANUARY 27, 1899 According to the proof advanced at the examining trial the facts and Circumstances are about as follows: About two years ago Mr. Wilson began paying his respects to Miss Cloyd in the capacity of a sweetheart and continued to do so regularly about once a week, some time not so often, and sometimes oftener, calling on her in the parlor of the hotel, where Mr. Wilson was a border and where the girl was a domestic, Mr. Wilson, all the while using every means known to the wiles of man to accomplish his purpose to have carnal knowledge of her and her ruin. Finally, yielding to his persuasive genius and under the solemn promise of marriage, she yielded to his lusty desires and her ruin and death followed. Mr. Wilson's confession, the girls dying declaration, substantiated by a volume of other evi- dences is insurmountable proof belief the girl was a pure girl up to the time of his knowledge of her, that he had given her medicine and that with his own hands, after she had refused to use it he had used the instrument which caused her death. This interview closed, this meeting ended by Mr. Wilson saying that before he would be forced to marry the girl he would kill himself. With this Mr. Wilson left the room, the town, the county and was never again seen in our county until last Sunday morning when he was arrested by the authorities in Madison county at Richmond and brought back here under the charge of murder. The dying declaration of the girl, made in the presence of Mrs. McLear, and Drs. Ramsey and Pennington was in substance as follows: That she was 25 years of age, that no other man save Mr. Wilson knew her carnally, that he accomplished her ruin under the most solemn promise of marriage, that Mr. Wilson was the father of her unborn child, that he had given her twelve pills with directions how to use them, one three times a day, that she took seven of them, that two days later about Dec. 27, Mr. Wilson told her that the pills might bring her all right, but that she did not want to run any risk, that he wanted to use an instrument, that he inserted it into the uterus by the use of a wire, cut it off leaving a portion of it in the uterus, and by this produced abortion , caused her illness and destroyed her life. Dr. Pennington assisted by Dr. Ramsey, attended the girl during her entire sickness and everything known to medical science was done to save her life. Wilson 1899 PART 1 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Reprinted with permission of the Laurel County Historical Society from their book "Excerpts from the Mountain Echo 1899" Copyright 1996 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ January 27, 1899 A sensation that had been smoldering and brewing in London the past four weeks burst forth with all its hideousness and desolating fury upon the peaceful inhabitants of our usually quiet little mountain city last Saturday and Sunday. It was the exposure of one of the most hideous, black and damnable crimes that ever disgraced our favorite town or blacked the record of our court. It was the story of the bewitching conduct of a wiley, cultured, daring and handsome young barrister, the betrayal, seduction, ruin and agonizing death of a sweet, innocent, confiding, pretty, though unlettered young lady and servant girl at the Catching Hotel. The young man implicated and charged with the crime is none less than Mr. E. K. Wilson, who, though he has been a citizen of our county only about nine years, has been honored more than once by the good people of this county, at one time chosen by the suffrage of the people to preside over the interests of the county as its legal adviser and representative as County Attorney, and came within a few votes of being called to preside over the county as its chief officer, County Judge. The young lady who met with such a sad misfortune and tragic death was Miss Mary E. Cloyd, daughter of Mr. Thomas Cloyd, who resides near McWhorter, this county, twelve miles north of London, but who has been serving in the capacity of a cook at the Catching Hotel for the past two and a half years. 1. MT. ECHO---new series!?
    2. Rita Stanifer Maggard
    3. Hello, world! With the recent problems with Maiser and all the confusion surrounding I am totally confused about what I have and have not posted on the last MT ECHO series we started. And to be totally honest, I just really do not want to try to figure it out right now! My "figure-outter" is all figured out after all that (plus 3 new counties!) except to figure out that at this point it would be best to back up and punt! Soooo...I'm just going to start a new series. We'll finish the other one later! In January 1899 an event happened in Laurel County that shocked the entire community. The case may sound vaguely familiar to you because of the parallels between it and a more recent case. A handsome, successful and well-known man became enamored (or at least fixated!) on a beautiful young woman of a lower economic status. The relationship progressed through the power of the man to manipulate and control the woman. When a situation arose that he could not control, he attempted to force events to conform to his desires regardless of the price others had to pay. The story proceeds through the death of the young woman and a completely innocent "bystander", the flight of the young man and his subsequent arrest, and the "media circus" that surrounded his trial. While the events happened in Laurel County and had little effect on anyone beyond it's boundaries, it should make interesting reading for a wider audience for several reasons: (1.) the vast change in the mores of eastern Kentucky in a little less than 100 years, (2.) the unchanging nature of basic human failings and weaknesses and (3.) the startling differences and, yet, somehow, the sameness of press coverage then and now. Keep in mind that this entire story was originally published in a local newspaper in a rural area in 1899 and was considered extremely risque. By the standards of today, the reporter's writing style is very formal, but in 1899 the public use of certain words and mention of certain topics was, in itself, scandalous...their publication shocking! And so, ladies and gentlemen, from Laurel County, Kentucky comes the story of the "trial of the century".....the 19th century, that is. 1. BOWMAN-MAINOUS
    2. I am a descendant of Melvina Bowman, daughter of Henry Bowman and Rachel Plummer, and Walter 'Preston' Mainous, son of Lazarus Lawson Mainous and Rebecca Amanda Flanary. Preston Mainous was born in Lee County, Virginia and came to Owsley County about 1858 with his parents. Preston left Owsley County after his marriage and worked as a 'miner' in Missouri, Arkansas and Oklahoma.. His daughter Cynthia Ann Mainous was my grandmother, she married Charles Wood Hulse in Carroll County, Arkansas in 1890. I have tried for years to find the parents of Lazarus Lawson Mainous, but have not been successful. Any help would be appreciated. I will be glad to help anyone with connections to the Mainous or Bowman family. I also have connections to the Plummer, Evans, Crawford, Lawson, Isaacs, and Flanary families. Lazarus and Rebecca had children that married into the Treadway, Hyden, Flanary, Scott, Minter, Reynolds, Hall, Holbrook, Ponder, and Spivey families. Janet Wise-Eiskina Pierce City, Mo. 1. Whew! What a weekend!
    2. Rita Stanifer Maggard
    3. Obviously, all of you know about the problem at Maiser....else you wouldn't be here! Boy, it sure put my plans into overdrive...I have now done things I had planned on doing a week from now. I think that means I'm ahead of myself?!? So everyone knows where we are and where we (hopefully!) are going I want to bring everybody up-to-date on several things. I have been the coordinator for the Laurel County KYGenWeb page since the project first began over a year ago. I started the LaurelCoKY AREA mail list several months ago and strongly believe county-specific lists are great! Most people seem to feel a little more comfortable posting to a smaller list than they do to a large one like KYROOTS. Since several of my family lines came from Lee and Owsley counties I jumped at the chance to adopt them when they became available. "I can handle two more counties," I told myself. And I believed myself, too! Sometimes, I am just so gullible! Anyway, then Breathitt suddenly became open and....well, my grandmother was from Breathitt...and I REALLY need to do some work there anyway...and some of my paternal lines ventured into Breathitt, too....and....Yep! I believed myself again! You'd think I would learn! So, here we are.....Breathitt, Laurel, Lee and Owsley counties. Cornett Corner? Well, that's one of those paternal lines that runs through all four counties...and everywhere else, too, I think! My grand plan to redo the Lee County page this weekend sort of fell by the wayside when Maiser went down. (Along with the plan to switch LaurelCoKY AREA to RootsWeb next week and then gradually add the other mail lists!) With the situation at Maiser so shakey I was afraid RootsWeb would be deluged with requests for lists for the next few weeks I decided I'd better get all the lists while I could. OK...that's where we are. The question is...where are we GOING?! Here's where I'd LIKE to go.... 1. Everyone needs to spread the word about the lists. Let everyone who might benefit from the new ones know they are up and help me track down the subscribers to the old lists to let them know we've moved. 2. Everyone needs to please feel free to immediately start posting their queries, lines, questions, etc. 3. Those of you who haven't already done so need to send a list of your surnames to me so I can post them on the county pages. The lists are great but having them on the page is more "permanent". 4. I would VERY MUCH like to get the "lookup" pages for each page really beefed up with a good list of available books and volunteers. Please post a list of the books you have and would be willing to do lookups in. 5. Any will, deed, Bible record, newspaper article, school record, church record, etc. that you would be willing to share should be posted to the list. Also let me know if you would be willing for me to post them to the web page. 6. Keep your 'thinking caps' on for any ideas to improve the page and/or the mail list. Feel free to send me any suggestions you have. Remember...this is not "MY" list...it is "OUR" list. The more each of us contributes the more all of us will benefit! Now, get ready, get set.....GO!
