Jackie, I am a HOLBROOK descendant - gggg granddaughter of Zachariah HOLBROOK and Sarah MORGAN. I am in touch with other cousins. Would love to know of your connection to the HOLBROOK line. My great grand aunt Elizabeth CLIFTON married Silas E. PRATHER in Randolph Co MO. Elizabeth is the daughter of David CLIFTON Jr. and Frances "Frankie" COBB - my gg grandparents. I am also in touch with cousins that have WAINSCOTT in their family. My other main surnames from Owen Co are COBB, CLIFTON, and MORGAN. These and my HOLBROOKs intermarried with a variety of Owen Co surnames. Isn't it great to have this mailing list to make more contacts? Sheryl McNeely Shaw Crosby, TX SJMcS@aol.com
Hi, My name is Jackie Couture and I am the archivist for Owen County. I've just updated the Owen County page and added some new records. If you have any files that you would like to have placed here, just let me know and I'll post them. It has been a busy summer, but I'm about caught up now. I have a couple other files to complete and hopefully I can get them uploaded soon. Maybe the next time I get to Owen County I can get some more material to add. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ky/owen/toc.html Thanks, Jackie Couture

Would like to exchange info with anyone researching the CLAXON (sometimes CLAXTON) family of Owen Co KY, hoping to fill in a few blanks, expecially on the early family in Virginia and England. My gg-grandfather was James CLAXON (1805-1843), son of Cassius CLAXON (1782-1872). Cassius was sheriff of Owen County for a while. I particularly need information on the parents of Cassius' wife, Nancy ROE (1782-1858), who was apparently an orphan raised by William Bassett and his wife, Margaret McQuiddy. Were Nancy's parents killed in an Indian raid in the 1780s? Merritt
Just so I can be one of the first on the new list, and Howdy to all my cousins in Owen Co. So far, all I have is this, my ggrandfather: SMITH, James C., b 31 Jan 1836, Owen Co., KY; d 4 Mar 1899, Arbela, Scotland Co., MO; m(1) 20 Dec 1860, HOLDER, Lucinda, Scotland Co., MO; she died 15 Jan 1870; m(2) 30 May 1870, Scotland Co., MO, YEAGER, Cordelia Mary. I'm still rooting around in MO and IA; hope to uncover more there about Owen Co. links. Of course, if someone here has a lead, I'd be most grateful. Floyd E. Turner mailto:floydt@erinet.com
Hello - I am researching John Searcy, Revolutionary War Vet, who made declaration for pension on October 1 1832 in Owen County, KY. Two of the gentlemen signing an affidavit stating they were well acquainted with John Searcy were John Garnett and Tobias Willhoite. They were also forebearers of mine. Does anyone have information regarding John's spouse(s), children? I know that a John Searcy signed a marriage bond for a daughter, Elizabeth Searcy, who married Obediah Willhoite (Tobias' son) in Owen County in 1830; and was a brother to my Israel Willhoite who married Jane Scearce in 1822 in Woodford County, KY. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Betty Babitzke bbabitz@peganet.com

Well, welcome to all the new Owen Co. reachers that have joined the list. I just checked and we have 17 members and the list is only a day old, so I just wanted to say welcome. Don't be shy ask some question give some history on your families, remember not everyone on the list knows each other we will have a lot of new people to get acquainted with. I just wanted to pass on an Email I just received from Melanie (she is a Hammon/Morgan researcher) she and cousin Elizabeth went to Owenton this weekend on a research mission, first time to visit the area and look what she found............... You are not going to believe what I found! I went to a flea market over the weekend after I had gone through the Owen County courthouse. I was walking by this outdoor booth and I saw this signature quilt and it caught my eye because of the age. It was or looked like it would have been made in the 1880's. (For your information I collect and make quilts so that is why I was able to tell the age of it.) It was really pretty and it had all these names on it. Guess what names it had on it? Hammond, Morgan and several other Owen County names on it. It was done in the late 1880's and it is a family quilt. Can you believe it? I almost died when I started reading all of the names. What a great find. I was looking for something that may have been made around the 1800's in Owen that I could just have. It probably sounds funny but at the time it didn't matter if it was made by my family or not but I cant believe I found this. One of the names is John Morgan and his wife. Another is Grandma Hammond. It doesn't have her first name on it though. Melanie ------------------------------------------------- I always wish I could find the family bible, etc., but to find a quilt made by your family!!!! She was so excited she did not even tell me what they found at the court house. Barbara
