Her father according to the marriage records was Joseph King does this sound like they might belong to your KING family? On the SMITH family, we have a lot of our CLIFTON boys marring SMITH girls, I am interested in connecting these girls to their families. The only real clue to one of the girls I have her father will and it names her (Nancy Clifton daughter) this is the will of John SMITH 9/6/1833 Owen Co his wife was Nancy and other children names in the will were: Elizabeth, Sally, Betsey, Jane and John Jr. Any connection. 1. [KYOWEN-L] Surname: Smith/Hicks
    2. My main surname in Owen County is SMITH and HICKS. Searching for information on my gggrandparents, William SMITH b. 1847, and wife Lucy HICKS b. 1848. They had 4 sons, Callie Smith b. 1871, Elonsa (Lonzo) Smith b. 1874, Eddie Smith b. 1879, and James Smith b. after 1880. Found the family in the 1880 Owen County, KY census, (Owenton Dist # 1). William was born in NC, Lucy and boys all born in KY. Family says William was all or part Cherokee Indian, (wen't by Bill Big Knife), however, listed as "white" on census. Have pictures of boys, they were dark complected. Cannot find family on any other census reports, cannot locate a marriage record, no luck with Cherokee roles, either. Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Dayna Ryan from Xenia, OH

    1. [KYOWEN-L] Purvis and Spurr family of Owen county
    2. vernon purvis
    3. ---------- > I am researching the Purvis and Spurr family of Owen county, Kentucky and anyone with a link to the family. John Spurr and his wife, America Devore, were married in Clark county, Kentucky around the year 1829. They moved to Owen county by the mid 1850s and lived in the Gratz area. They had 13 children. John died about 1861. America was still alive in 1900 when she was living with her daughters family, Mahula Sharp. Dudley Spurr, a son of John and America, married Mary "Polly" Purvis around the year 1860. Mary was the daughter of Samual Purvis and Nancy Rutherford that had moved to the Gratz area of Owen county around the mid 1850s. No record of Mary and Dudley's marriage. A mystery involves there daughter, Nancy Ellen. She is listed as a one year old child in the household of Mary's mother in the 1860 census. I wonder if Dudley is her real father. Mary died in 1889 and Dudley married Dora Stewart in 1891 and had 6 more children. Dudley died in 1909 and was said to have been a Mason in the Gratz lodge ( anyone know how to contact them?) After Dudley Died, Dora married Charles Purvis in 1911. He died in 1918 and Dora about 1920. All are in unmarked graves around gratz. Nancy Ellen Spurr, daughter of Mary and Dudley, is said to have married a George Thacker in the 1880s. No record of this marriage and no Thacker researcher can place him. Had twins Rose and Richard, about 1885, Richard died as a baby Nancy remarried to Benjamin Franklin Purvis around 1888 ( again no record of it) and moved to Henry county in the 1890s.

    3. Hello Owen County Researchers - Is anyone out there researching John Searcy, Revolutionary War Vet, who married Milly Francis Lea in Woodford County, KY on Sept 8, 1789 and was the son of Bartlett Searcy and Lucy Anderson, besides me? John Searcy was also a minister in Owen County, KY and closely associated with John Garnett and Tobias Willhoite. In fact, John Searcy's daughter, Elizabeth Searcy, married Obediah Willhoite, Tobias' son, on 10 March 1830 in Owen County. (No proof yet, but I think Jane Scearce was an older daughter who married Israel Willhoite, Tobias' oldest son in Woodford County, Ky in 1822.) Anyone out there have any proof of this? Would love to hear from you! Thanks for any help. Betty Babitzke 524 La Caruna Ct. Punta Gorda, Fl. 33950-7838

    1. [KYOWEN-L] Owen County Ancestors
    2. Greetings Owen County Researchers! The Owen Co., KY ancestors that I am presently researching (without much luck) are the MARION's: Clem MARION had a son, William Preston MARION (1876-1914) who married Cynthia LUCKETT or LUSHELL (1861-1936). William suffocated in a mine near Gratz, and I have his death certificate, but it's not very clear. I have tried to find information on the cemetery which is either Minish or Munish on Highway 82 East, 9 miles from Owenton, but it appears there are no existing records. Is anyone familiar with the surname MARION or with this particular cemetery? I could sure use some help. William and Cynthia were supposedly living in Gratz at the time of his death. The is a marriage for a Frederick to Deodora Gillock, 1842. Don't know is this is father to Wm. H..... Hayden, age 11, is on the 1850 census, listed with family of Samuel Hunt. 1. RE: [KYOWEN-L] Hello everyone
    2. Steven E. Cull
    3. In case anyone hasn't noticed, most of the Morgans in Owen Co. are related to "Elder" William Morgan. There is some information about him at the KY biographies web site, under a couple of his son (or grandsons). I believe there is 2 links. Anyway, give me a day or so and I'll put all of my Morgan information on my web site. Judy, I don't have anything on your Sarah, but if she married into the Holbrook family she is probably related to William Morgan. The Morgans, Holbrooks, Balls, Cull, Ligons,......all lived in the same general area (and most are buried there also). Along the Big Twin Creek road. The church that William preached at is still in use today. The church's cemetery is where he and his family, and most of mine, and probably yours, are buried. The cemetery sits on the side of a ridge (Balls Ridge), a lot of the stones have been lost, washed away, or grow over. What is left if taken care of. 3. You know this is the first time I've seen a Breeden/Morgan connection. I am related on both sides. Let me figure this out.....Okay, I am descended from Thomas W. Morgan, (the brother of Elijah), through his daughter Susan A. Morgan, she married into the Ball family. On the Breeden side...I am descended from Abner Breeding,(the brother of your Richard, yes Frances' surname was Fairchild). Contact me about the Breeden family. 2. Hello Everyone! I am new to the list... Hope someone out there recognizes these names. Searching for information on my great great grandparents, William Smith born 1847, and wife Lucy Smith (Hicks) b. 1848, they had 4 sons, Callie Smith b. 1871, Elonsa (Lonzo) Smith b. 1874, Eddie Smith b. 1879, and James Smith b. after 1880. Found the family in the 1880 Owen County, KY census, (Owenton Dist # 1); but have not been able to find the family in 1870 or 1900 census, cannot locate their marriage record either. William was born in NC, Lucy and boys all born in KY. Family says William was all or part Cherokee Indian, (went by Bill Big Knife), however, listed as "white" on census. I have hit a brick wall, any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you, Dayna
