This is quoted in the MaGinnis Family History by John F. Meginnis, privately published, Williamsport, 1891, pgs 220-222. "The following record appears in Power's Biographical History of Sangamon County, Illinois: '1. David McGinnis, b. (???), 1798, in Mercer County, Kentucky; m. Elizabeth Gibson, in Boone County, December 24, 1820. She d. November (???), 1844, in Sangamon County, Illinois, and he married, second, Mrs. Sally M. King, of Warsaw, Kentucky, in 1851. Her maiden name was Spencer. His death, which occurred July 2, 1867, was caused by injuries received by being thrown from a buggy by a runaway horse. After marriage he settled in Boone County, Kentucky, and must have resided there several years, for I find that they had three children born to them in that county. In the fall of 1826 he visited Sangamon County, Illinois, and after selecting a place to locate, returned to Kentucky. On the 18th of November, 1827, he brought his family to Sangamon County, Illinois, and settled in what is now Island Grove Township. He was accompanied by his brother, Greenbury Dawson, and in a short time they were followed by two more brothers. By dint of hard work he broke up land and opened a farm. That he was prosperous we have evidence, for the local historian says that in 1838 he stall fed about sixty head of cattle. This was the first thing of the kind done in that part of the State. He drove them to St. Louis and sold them for $18 per head. They averaged 1600 pounds in weight. He brought the money home in silver, and kept it for months in an old secretary, without locks on it, or on the doors of the house. The doors of the desk were open so that the money could be seen, and several hired men were about, and there never was a dollar stolen. In 1836 he erected a brick house in Island Grove, and a few years ago it was standing in a good state of preservation. It was about the first structure of the kind built in Sangamon County, outside of Springfield. David McGinnis and his brother William were the inventors of a device for guiding prairie plows by wheels and a lever, which they put in operation in the summer of 1829. It was adopted throughout the prairie country, and might have made them a fortune, but it was never patented. His death, which occurred July 2, 1867, was caused by injuries received by being thrown from a buggy by a runaway horse. His widow was, at last accounts, living at the old homestead, three miles southwest of Curran. David McGinnes and his first wife had issue: i. Mary Jane, b. October 9, 1821, in Kentucky; m. Bernard A. Vanderen, of Sangamon County, Ill., and d. August 5, 1842. Her only living child, John D. Vanderen, is married and lives in Labeth County, Kansas. ii. William, b. July 27, 1823, in Boone County, Kentucky, June 19, 1845, he married Lorinda Darneille. They had three children living, viz.: 1. Zachary T., m., November (???), 1871, Fannie Wright, daughter of Dr. N. Wright. They have two children; live at Chatham, Ill. 2. Emma; m., December 24, 1874, Jacob Staley. 3. Charles. Lives with his parents. iii. Martha A., b. September 1, 1827, in Kentucky; m. Thomas J. Darneille, of Sangamon County, Ill.; d. December 2, 1853. iv. Elizabeth, b. October 25, 1829, in Sangamon County; m. James A. Hall. v. John J., b. February 8, 1832, in Sangamon County; m. Elizabeth Green July 16, 1855. She was born February 5, 1838, in Owen County, Kentucky. They had two children--David R. and William. Mr. McGinnis d. February 15, 1856. vi. America, b. (???), 1834; d. (???), 1844. vii. Margaret, b. (???), 1836; m. R. R. Roberts. Had one child, and mother and child both died. viii. David S., b. December 15, 1838; d. in 1860. ix. Elizabeth J., b. March 29, 1840; m. John J. Green April 2, 1867. He was b. October (???), 1842, in Owen County, Kentucky. They had two childred--David M. and John M. The mother d. February 3, 1873. This is super site for those searching in Kentucky. I wish the other states had this information. Especially the death index, since it begins in 1911. I have found many death records for my Van Deren and associated lines. It's one site that you need to refer to often if you are looking in Kentucky. Here is the URL for the Kentucky Death Index 1911-1986, 1987-1992 The kentucky marriage index for 1973-1993 The kentucky divorce index for 1973-1993 http://ukcc.uky.edu/~vitalrec/ It gives the name of the person, county of the record, county of residence and the certificate and volume numbers to request a copy. Also given is the Vital record website on how obtain a copy. They work very quickly and for a death cert., I think it was $6.00 by mail. The Url for these multi-county 1850 census compilations is: http://www.mindspring.com/~sistler/kycoweb.html And they have some other books to sell. AGLL's prices are far more reasonable than the National Archives. 2) You can get a photocopy book of the 1850 census for Owen Co. Look in any of the big genealogy mag's for an ad. I don't think other census years are availble. 3) You can get the 1850 Owen Co., KY census on CD-ROMs made by two different companies. I don't recall the name of one company, but the name I do remember -- FamilyTreeMaker (Broderbund) -- is the one I recommend as the 1850 Owen Co., KY census is part of a set. You get the 1850 census for all counties of KY on one set of 3 CD-ROM. This is the actual images taken from the microfilm of the actual records *and* includes a statewide index of heads-of-households. Go to http://www.familytreemaker.com/ and then follow the links around to where the CD-ROMs are described. Note: You will need a "viewer" program from FamilyTreeMaker, provided separately, but it is free. Here is the ALLCensus websight that has the actual image of the census on CDs. http://www.allcensus.com/ Barbara has the 1850 Owen Co census on CD. I believe hers is from Cenus View. http://www.galstar.com/~censusvu/ These print out copies of the actual pages just like you do at the library. Nice to have the actual images - helps to catch any mistakes in indexes, etc. Hope this helps someone. Sheryl McNeely Shaw
A good partial census (i.e. schedule pages with names and ages of all individuals but no place of birth, value of property, occupation, etc.) and index for the 1850 census for Owen and the nearby counties of Carroll, Gallatin, Harrison, Henry, Oldham, Owen, Scott, and Trimble included in one volume (Grant Co. is unfortunately in another volume): 1850 CENSUS, NORTHERN KENTUCKY, PART I by Barbara, Byron and Samuel Sistler, 1996 Byron Sistler and Associates, Inc. POBox 120934 Nashville, TN 37212 615-297-3085 "The entries appear in the same order as on the original schedules. In general an entry comprises all members of a given household, except that any individuals whose surname differed from that of the household head are shown as a separate unit." There is one index for all eight counties. The index includes the name of the householder, age, county abbreviation, schedule page number, and individuals whose surnames differs from the householder: e.g. index entry for an entire household REVEL, Eldridge S. 57 (OW-232) e.g. index entry for a partial household (one which contains at least one individual with a different surname RESOR, Dallas 5 * (G-156) In the latter example Dallas RESOR, 5 years old, is listed just after the household with *Lucinda BALDWIN 25, Rhoda 5, S.D 1 (m). [ "m"="male" since "S.D." gives no indication of gender. ] so is part of her household. I have found several names poorly transcribed. e.g. NEARSCH, WILLIAM sr, p. 166 Gallatin Co. - should be MARSH, William sr AGRES, Coleman , p. 196 Owen Co.. - should be AYRES, Coleman But any book is going to have mistakes. This a very useful book. I do quite a few look-ups for Owen Co. researchers and use this census frequently. I think it cost $32 when I bought it two years ago.
The only census for Owen County that I know of for sale is the 1850. Check out this web page for information: http://www.skpub.com/genie/census/ky/ This is a photocopy of the original census rather than a transcription. I cannot locate the web address but there is a web sight that offers the census for various counties and states. The program is called CENSUS VIEW I have the 1850 Owen Co and its great you can see the actual census (micro film) and zoom in if you can't read a name print the census and lighten bad pages. I think the cost is around $25.00 I have had mine for over a year and runs off the CD Had my computer crash and lost a lot of favorite places let me see what I can find for an address or try a search using census view. That's a tall order.. Census records on microfilm can be purchased from the National Archives. For topo maps, call the U.S. Geological Survey at 1-800-USA-MAPS and ask for their catalog for Kentucky (it was free last time I checked). Using the catalog you can order the topo maps you want (it takes about 9 maps to cover Owen County). I believe they cost $4 each with a $3.50 per order handling charge. They will show cemeteries, roads and trails, and even individual buildings in the rural areas. Merritt
