Hi Barbara and All -- I believe that the Elijah Wainscott you asked about was a son of John C. Wainscott and Susannah Cugle. Elijah had at least 19 children over a 34 year period. Of course, it took 3 wives to do it. Nancy Clifton appears as his second wife. He married her in 1852, so it is unlikely that she was his wife on the 1850 Census. I have only one child born to Elijah and Nancy. She may have died in childbirth soon after the first child, as in Nov. 1856 Elijah married for the third time. Although he already had 7 children aged 1-16 from his first 2 marriages, he went on to have 12 more by his third wife. Also, what is the relationship between Nancy Clifton and Mariah Clifton? I have Mariah as married in 1835 to Elijah Wainscott's brother, Washington Wainscott. For Mariah's parents I have Noah Clifton and Charlotte Osborne. Right? Sue in Virginia
I now have the marriage information for Elijah to Nancy Clifton his age was listed as 35 (1817) and Nancy 21 (1831) they were married in Owen Co December 1852 I believe Nancy is the daughter of Robert & Nancy (Smith) Clifton Robert is the son of David Sr (not proven) She was listed living with her brother Charles on the 1850 census (again not proven) The reason I am trying to find out more on Elijah and Nancy (Clifton) Winscott it may help me prove that Charles is the son of Robert. Robert dies in 1833 no will he was only 28 so all I have to go on is census records from 1830. By 1840 Mitchell Clifton (son & presumed brother of Robert) marries Robert's widow Nancy (Smith) Clifton and the 1840 census proves the 1830 census on the number of children Robert had, by 1850 they are gone. I have guardian bonds which name some of his children but Nancy and Charles are not among those listed they would have been "of age" Note on the 1850 census pg 178 an Elijah Wenscott 37 & wife Nancy 28 living next door to David Clifton Jr. Listed in David's household is 2 of Robert's children Elizabeth 22 & George 19 and a Henry Smith 14 (David & Mitchell signed the guardian bond for all 3 children) 2 doors away Soloman Wenscott 57 (no wife) (on the index I have name spelled WE not WI they are the only 2 listed that way) a few doors down Abraham 27, Richard 51, Thomas H 28, Barlette 25, (ALL ARE MARRIED LISTED WITH CHILDREN) I cannot find Elijah 33 with any household. Anyone have any ideas Thanks Barbara
I just found out that the daughter of Elija & Nancy (Clifton) Wainscot) was the Nancy Hays that was listed in Charles Clifton will 1895. "To my adopted daughter Nancy Hays married to J. T. Hays...." Nancy (Wainscot) Hays was born 1854 or 1864 2 records different dates The only Elija I have in my dada base was born 1837 and the son of Washington & Meariah (Cifton) Wainscot. He could be the father of Nancy b 1854/64 I am trying to ID her mother Nancy Clifton and see if this is the correct Elija. Anyone have any ideas on this one?? Any clues?? Thanks Barbara

Ancestry has the census index on line for ALL STATES see below. You have to be a member to do lookups but it works great. I have the 1850 Owen, CO census now that the index is available to me, as time permits, I can do lookup for any of you just let me know. If you want to join go to www.ancestry.com or if your a member after you log the census index it listed under member searches - US Census Records Happy Hunting Barbara PS one little trick if you want to look up a surname without "first name" search ALL RECORDS do not ask for a county or state. The search results will break down the name by state. Even with a first name it will still break out by state if you search ALL RECORDS -------------------------------------------------- This collection contains Federal Census Indexes, State Census Indexes, and indexes to various Federal non-population schedules (Mortality Schedules, Veterans Schedules, Slaves Schedules) for most of the US and parts of Canada. The scope of the collection includes colonial records (pre-1790 tax lists, resident's lists, etc.) and censuses from 1790 to 1870. Some census indexes for later years exist for some states (i.e. Hawaii 1910, Colorado 1880, etc.). It is estimated that the collection contains information on some 35 million people. --------------------------------------- KY census on the database KY 1810 Federal Census Index KY 1820 Federal Census Index KY 1830 Federal Census Index KY 1840 Federal Census Index KY 1840 Pensioners List KY 1850 Federal Census Index KY 1850 Mortality Schedule KY 1850 Slave Schedule KY 1860 Federal Census Index KY 1860 Mortality Schedule KY 1870 Federal Census Index KY 1890 Veterans Schedule KY Early Census Index
This was posted to a surname list I belong to it is packed with great information on how to get started with your research work. The only thing I might add is write down the neighbors on both sides from the census and if you can copy the complete page. Barbara ************************************************************************ Welcome to the world of crazy genealogists!! This is a great pursuit--totally interesting and often frustrating! I can't help you with your immediate query, but offer some "beginning" advice, based on my years of tree-climbing. 1-Gather and organize and study all the information you have in your own family and extended family. Develop a pedigree chart, and family group sheets for each couple on it. Put all pertinent info on a family group sheet, so you have it in easily usable form. This includes Bible records, certificates, newspaper clippings, funeral programs, letters, etc. Talk to all the older generation you can contact. Get their memories recorded while you can! Get PLACES and DATES as well as names! Even a "that was before I was married" is a better date than none at all. Ask them to tell you about THEIR grandparents and aunts and uncles, people who died before your birth. 2-Keep a separate folder for each of your 4 grandparents, and expand them as you go further back (add folders for each new surname) Keep all your research results in the appropriate folder, and KEEP a good record of places you have searched, so that you won't duplicate your efforts. (Sometimes you will WANT to go back and re-do a source, when you have additional information) 3-Begin to construct a time line for each family you are researching. This is writing down in chronological order the major events of their lives, starting with date and place of their birth (known or guessed at); marriage date and place; birth of their children with dates and places; date and place of death, and other events, such as moves. This guides your research efforts--you work to confirm and fill in the blanks. 4-As you research, go from the known to the unknown. Start with death info--get the record if it exists, see what it says about who parents and state of birth was. Although birth and parentage info on a death certificate/record is OFTEN not completely accurate (who gave it?) it is somewhere to start. Was there an obituary in your grangrandmother's box of papers?? Work backward, tracing your ancestor. This is when you start using the census as a locater to place them in a specific locality each ten years. As soon as you have identified a specific locality, you can look at their vital records (birth, marriage, death) and land records, local histories, etc. Start with the most recent census and work backward. I love the 1900 census because of the wonderful information it contains. So even though you think you know about what you would find, look it up anyway, as it gives the states of birth for the parents of each individual, which you may not have known, how long the parents have been married (this gives an approximate marriage date) and the month and year of their birth, which is more accurate than reporting age. Also tells how many children the mother has had, and how many are still living (although sometimes this question appears to be misunderstood by the respondent to mean how many are now living in your home!) Census is not a 100% accurate document, but it is a wonderful finding tool. 5-If you do not have access to census index and films, you can go to your nearest Family History Center, where you can order any film the Salt Lake Family History Library has for a small rental fee, keep it for 6 weeks, and read it at the Center. There are also pamphlets there on getting started, and some general reference books. Because these centers are staffed by volunteers, they are not open all day every day, so find their address (http://www.Cyndislist.com has EVERYTHING, so you can find it there) and call for their hours. You can also now do a lot of automated searching on the computer at http://www.familysearch.org and other web sites, some of which have census records you can see. The Family History Library has filmed MANY county records, so you can order those films, too. I have done this over the years, when I have lived in places not convenient to large libraries. 6-Try to schedule time for mundane things like eating and sleeping ;-) Hope this helps!

I just finished posting to my web page all the NEW Prather family history, this takes the family back to Thomas Prather 1570 and includes the families that moved to Missouri from Owen Co late 1800's There was one Prather, Benjamine Higgins, that moved to Owen County in the early 1800 and some of his sons moved to Missouri so if you have Prather family in Missouri and connect back to KY this is probably your family line. Several surnames (from Owen Co) connected to the Prather's KINMAN, ROMANS, HAMMON(D), CLIFTON,BRISSEY,SHROCK, KNIGHTLY,BOLSTER,HIGGINS Go to http://members.aol.com/cliftoncuz/index.htm Then Family Album then PRATHER The Prather information can also be found on the NEW searchable data base found in The Parlor, but it does not contain the family history notes. I received this message from a Lusby researcher wanted to post it to see if anyone could help with his Samuel Lusby, but he brought up a good question how did the town of Lusby Mill get it's name? Does anyone have the history I have not researched that area yet. I have the history on how Owen Co came by it's name and how Lusby Mill was 1st called Cobb's Mill but not the history of Lusby Mill. Please post to the list if you have the history. Thanks Barbara ********************************************* Hi, Barbara-- I have thousands of descendants of Calvert Co., MD Lusbys, but I don't know if there's a connection with your Lusbys. My great-great-grandfather, Samuel Lusby (1794- ), disappeared after 1832 and before 1840. I'm wondering if he went there. Have you no idea how your Lusbys started? Regards, Dene

Many years ago I had the chance to visit the site of the Andersonville Prison grounds. It is a beautiful place and was so serene on the Sunday that we went. Hard to believe how terrible a place it had been so many years before. Since it was a weekend, and the office was closed, we were unable to get a list of the gravesites. I was with a friend whose gggrandfather had died in Andersonville. Each dead soldier was given a number and put in next to another in these trenches. Then the graves were marked with small numbered stones. That is how you could find the location of a dead ancestor. It was not too long after that that I read Andersonville by MacKinley Cantor. Really unbelieveable for those men who lived and died there. It is well worth reading, especially if you have an ancestor who was part of the history. Judy Estes Lawrence
