I am researching the MASON family of Owen Co. My grandmother was Allie D. Mason, b. 1877, Owen Co., the daughter of Jesse Mason, b. 1845, wife, Mary A.?, b. 1848. Children: Daniel, William, Nancy, Elizia, George, Charley, Sarie J. Jesse fought for the South in the Civil War, but I do not know the unit, etc. I have discovered most of these records in the US Census 1880. Does anyone know any more about this family? I can be reached at ernieky1@yahoo.com Judy Sluder
Melanie, Where you want to go depends on what and when you are looking for. If you are looking for anything very recent, then you need to head for the courthouse of the county you are most interested in. I presume that would be Owen. However, check the hours for the courthouse. There is one weekday I believe it is either open only a half-day or not at all. If you are intereted in before about 1870, then you want to go to the facilities in Frankfort. There is the KY Hist. Soc. Library for general research. I think they are in new facilities. Best you check their website for location and hours. The best place for courthouse (before about 1870) for all counties and state records is the KY State Archives. They also have a website where you can get the location and hours. They also have death certificates through 1947. The Margaret King (UK) Library is in Lexington. It is hard to get parking there. If you were interested in newspapers, then this is the place to go as they have the best collection in KY. They also have the E.E. Barton Collection there which has a lot of Pendleton and Grant Co. families. The Barton Collection is also available on microfilm at any LDS branch library by ordering from the library in Salt Lake, so there isn't too much point of going there just for that. The Filson Club (Louisville) has some interesting stuff, but of very specific interest. My suggestion is this -- decide what records you want to see. If you are interested in Owen Co. court records, then call up the Owen Co. Clerk's office and also the Owen Co. Circuit Court Clerk's office (there are two different offices in the same courthouse) to see if they still have the records you are interested in or whether they have been sent to the KY State Archives. Then you go where the records are. For general research go to the KY Hist. Soc. Library. Lee SBMKHB@aol.com wrote: > > Hi! I am writing to ask a favor of all of you! I am searching for my gg-grandparents. This is what I know: James L. Smith of Owen County married Heniretta Rogers on Oct 3, 1867. Heniretta was born on Oct 25, 1850. She was the daughter of Henry Rogers and Louise (last name unknown) of Owen County. They had four children a Mrs. Robert Lindsay (married name), Ida (Hicks) and Nellie (Mower) and Charity "Chattie". Chattie was my great-grandmother. She was born in 1871 and died on Sep 30, 1928. She Married Ell Graves of Stamping Ground, Scott Co, KY. If anyone has a line on this, please share info with me. Thanks.
Hi! I am writing to ask a favor of all of you! I am in need of some advice? I am going to be going to Kentucky to do some research and I only have one day. Where should I go?? I have a few places in mind but I would like to know what Society or Library has the most information. Is it the Filson CLub or UK's library? I would appreciate your help!! Thanks inadvance! Sincerely, Melanie Hammons Bishop P.S. I will be looking up Owen County Records and families so if you want me to look up something for you let me know. I can't promise I will find it but I will try!

I just received "copies of orginal" marriage bonds/marriage certificiates from my favorate cousin Glenna. This marriage I have never figured out now with the marriage bond maybe someone has a clue: Edmond Clifton and William H. Miller take out a bond on March 18, 1828 for the marriage of Edmond Clifton and Elizabeth Margeum, Owen Co., KY Note This could be the same William Miller that married Nancy Clifton (Edward's daughter) 2/3/1823 (Grant Co) Here is my problem the only "known" Edmond "old enough" to marry was the brother to David Sr & Noah Clifton He was born abt 1780 DE (his son Daniel was born in 1800) & we know he dies after 7/18/1829 he left no will. On the 1820 census he is listed with wife & 2 sons. This could be his missing son, but we have no other record of an Edward on the 1830/1840 census. Does anyone know something about William Miller or Elizabeth Margeum that may help me in solving my Edward question. Thanks Barbara

If you had family that lived in KY when it was still VA you might want to check this out I found some of my "old" family lines Good luck Barbara ====================================================== DATABASE OF THE DAY (Free for 10 Days!) <<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>> ======================================================= Virginia Marriage Index, 1740-1850 Throughout the 18th and well into the 19th Century, Virginia was one of the most populous states in the Union, being home to as many as 1.2 million persons at any one time. This collection of marriage records includes the names of over 300,000 men and women married in the state between 1740 and 1850. In addition to providing the names of bride and groom, researchers will find the date of marriage and county in which the ceremony was performed. HAYES m: March 09, 1892 in Owen Co., KY >> Bless you this is it and now I have enough evidence to help support my theory that Charles is Robert's son and David Sr grandson. As I previously stated I believe Nancy (that married Elijah Wainscott) is the daughter of Robert & Nancy (Smith) Clifton. Robert is the son of David Sr (not proven) Nancy was listed living with her brother Charles on the 1850 census and another sister Therisa was also living in the home (Therisa was listed in David Sr will as granddaughter) You said Nancy Marries 1852 so this fits and dies abt 1855 leaving her only child Nancy. Her brother Charles and wife Easter first born was daughter Nancy b 1846 d 1861. Yet in 1870 another Nancy is listed age 15. I had the death record for his daughter and the census taker listed this Nancy as a child not niece or the fact she was a Wainscott (typical) Then on the 1880 census Nancy is listed as niece and they show her to be a Wainscott. So this all makes sense he took in his dead sister only child and raised her as his own. Then Nancy Wainscott marries J T Hays 1892 this works as Charles will is dated 1896 and he states "to my adopted daughter Nancy Hays, fifty acres of the residue of my land upon conditions that her husband J T Hays, I being surety on said note with said J T Hays pays out of the fifty acres of land a note to Dr. A. W Smither of one hundred and fifty dollars or upwards said fifty acres of land to be allotted to said Nancy Hays off the upper end of the Hammons land so as to include some timber." This helps me as the land listed is just below David Sr old homestead and Robert would have been given land when he married (1825) and this would have passed to his son Charles helping prove my theory. Robert is also buried in the Clifton cemetery, located on David Sr original farm and so is Charles wife Easter and most of their children. Wonder why Nancy waited so long to marry born in 1855 married in 1892 she was 37. I do know that the 1st 4 children Charles and Easter had (1846 - 1852) were all dead by 1888 and wife Easter died in 1889 out of 4 sons only one survived him and out of 5 daughters only 2 survived him, so maybe she stayed in the household to help the family, who knows? I did find in the census index 1870 a J T Hayes but I do not have a copy of that census page, he may have been a widower, will check it out. Thank you again and to answer you second question------- <<Also, what is the relationship between Nancy Clifton and Mariah Clifton? >> Noah Clifton is David Sr brother so Robert (Nancy's father) and Mariah would have been 1st cousins <> This is correct I have Noah's family history posted on my web page and I am updating David Sr right now that is why all the questions on Charles's family. Thanks again for all the great information Barbara
