    1. Re: [KYOHIO] Ohio County obituaries
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: FJLong Surnames: Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kentucky.counties.ohio/7365.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Robert & other Ohio County researchers: I have just published the books, "Ohio County, Kentucky Obituary Index, 1873-1899" and "Ohio County, Kentucky Obituary Index, 1900-1910". I have also reprinted "Ohio County, Kentucky Obituary Index, 1920-1980" (originally published in 2004). I have previously published several sources on Ohio County (including a book on 1810-1840 censuses & early tax lists, as well as numerous articles on various county records, cemetery listings, bible & family sketches). For the past 25 years one of my pet projects has been reading the old newspapers of Ohio County. I have gone through all known newspapers for the county from 1873 through 1980 and made a listing of all obituaries and death notices I could find. In 2004 I published an "Index" book to the obituaries for the years of 1920-1980. It listed the newspaper titles & dates in which the obits were found but not the vital data given in the original article(s). The two new volumes abstract all info given in the deaths notices and obituaries found in the periods of 1873 to 1899 and 1900 to 1919. If given they record the dates & places of death & birth, causes of death, cemeteries were interred, survivors, race, marital data, current & past residences, occupations, military service, other notable references about the person or his family. The volumes contain many annotations to other previous or subsequent newspaper articles about the person or immediate members of his family. In the approximately 1300 pages of the three volumes about 39,000 deaths are chronicled. They are arranged in alphabetical order by the name of the deceased and include cross indexes of all veterans and other names and relatives cited. The volumes al! so include numerous citations of obituaries or articles for the same person that were published in the Owensboro, KY newspapers. I have knowledge of the Owensboro articles since I have compiled the online Owensboro Obituary Index for the years of 1842-1919 available on the Daviess County Public Library's Internet site (http://obits.dcplibrary.org/). I believe that the Ohio County obituary volumes integrate, present and make accessible extensive history of Ohio County and its families.
