Author: Barry_Ashby Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kentucky.counties.ohio/7342.6.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Lynn, Thank you so very much. I will definitely look deeper into all of this information. Yes, what you provided is related to land that was once owned by my Ashby ancestors of Ohio County. FYI, I directly descend from Jesse Ashby 1738 - 1823 and Tamar (b. Ruby) 1756 - 1841. Jesse and Tamar Ashby were founding members of the Baptist Church of Jesus Christ, on Walton's Creek, when it opened on 9 July 1814. Nowadays it's called Walton's Creek Baptist Church. When researching ASHBY surnames I have to look at all ASHLEY surnames as well. The two names are so close in spelling that I have to consider them one and the same. Oh, I do separate them, but only after all the research dust has settled. As for details about specific parcels that my Ashby tribe members bought and sold, I can only say, "Stay tuned." I honestly don't know very much about same. I'll surely know more after I see some land deeds. What I do know is my ancestors farms were centered around property located south of the Rough River (or Rough Creek) along Walton Creek just north of present-day Centertown. Fact: My great grandfather (mother's side), Edmund Rowe Ashby 1835 - 1913, resided at approximately Lat 37 25.93 Lon 87 00.80 roughly one mile north of Centertown. Unknown is where my great grandfather (father's side), Christopher Rowe Ashby 1863 - 1929, resided. Over time these Ashby's surely bought and sold land parcels throughout the county. I know for sure my father's uncle, Ulys Clark Ashby 1895 - 1950, owned a few parcels. Sorry, I don't know how Walton Creek got its name. Matthew Walton sure looks to be a very likely suspect. Very near the Ashby farmlands and very near to where Walton Creek joins the Rough River is a place designated "Rosses Ripple". I don't know how "Rosses Ripple" got its name either. I do know that a Thomas Ross b. Abt. 1784 married Jesse and Tamar's daughter, Elizabeth "Bettie" Ashby b. 1785. Did Thomas and Bettie Ross own land in Ohio County? I honestly don't know. It is an abstract from the "Cook book" I mentioned. Thought you would want to get a copy of this deed from Ohio Co. courthouse. This is indexed as JESSE ASHLEY DEED BOOK C, page 89 3 October 1807. MATHEW WALTON of WASHINGTON County to JESSE ASHLEY in consequence of an agreement between him and ROBERT CALDWELL that binds Caldwell to convey a debt on LOUALLEN JONES and CHARLES IRBY, conveys to ASHLEY 1,000 acres on Rough Creek. JACOB LEAY, JESSE HEAD, witnesses. Recorded 5 October 1807 This seems to relate to my post of an abstract of Deed Book C, page 242, 11 July 1808 whereby JESSE & TAMOR ASHBY convey 50 acres on Rough Creek to Thomas Ross. The 50 acres being part of 1,000 acres deeded to Ashby by MATHEW WALTON. Two things come to mind in reading these abstracts. One is - Waltons Creek in Ohio Co. Is there a connection to Mathew Walton? Second is - Rossville in Ohio Co. Either you or Oscar or someone posted info re. Rossville on Rough Creek (north side I think?) Is there a connection between the Jesse Ashby land, Thomas Ross and Rossville? As you know, the actual deed would likely give a detailed description of the land and maybe answer questions or raise more. They know what records are there and where to look for them, and are old hands at courthouse research. Call up the county clerk and ask for a researcher's name. Or, I just bought about 15 deed copies this way last month. If you want to do it this way, I'll ask my researcher if she wants some more business. It's cheaper in the long run when you can't go there. Janice Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: lrmbjb Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kentucky.counties.ohio/7342.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Barry, I'm sure there are many people that monitor this board that can help you more than me. However, I will try to get it started subject to correction. The County Court Clerk has custody of the records you seek. Their is a Grantor- Grantee index that gives both names, a very brief description of property and dates of course. It then gives the deed book and page number where the complete doument is recorded, With that info, you then go to the "stacks" or big file shelves that house the deed book, take it out and look at the page number given and thus can read (or get a copy) of the deed you are interested in. This same basic procedure applies to all sorts of records, ie Wills, marriages etc. (Someone correct me if this ain't exact) I'm sure you can order copies and probably not very costly. I don't have that info at hand but will look it up if you can't find on line. However, In 1986, Michael & Bettie Cook published Ohio County Records. Vol 1 (abstracts) 1799-1852which has: Marriage Bonds & Consents - (1799-1880) Index to marriage bonds & consents - 1799-1880) Addenda to Marriage records with index. Deed Book A (1799-1803) Deed Book AA (1799-1813) Deed Book B (1805-1807) Deed Book BB (1799-1852) Deed Book C (1807-1809) INDEX TO DEED BOOKS I have a copy of the above listed deed index and abstracts. Example: Deed Book AA: page 284, 4 Oct. 1810 - abstract JOSEPH ASHBY and TAMER ASHBY his wife to Joseph Warden for sum of $156 convey 83 acres on which ASHBY now lives, part of tract of land deeded by Mathew Walton to ASHBY in the line of Joseph Lewis' survey. Corner of John Taylor's survey. Recorded 4 October 1810. Deed Book C, page 242, 11 July 1808 - abstract JESSE ASHBY and TAMOR ASHBY his wife to Thomas Ross for sum of one shilling convey 50 acres on Rough Creek, part of 1,000 acres deeded to ASHBY by Mathew Walton. Recorded 13 July 1808 with dower release of TAMOR ASHBY. LM NOTE - I don't know if Joseph & Tamer are the same as Jesse & Tamor or not - perhaps you do. The index has the following ASHBY names: Amy, George, Jane, Jesse, Joseph, Tamer, Tamor, and Thomas. Having said all of this (subject to correction) I suggest, if you can not visit the Courthouse, that you obtain copies of the ASHBY INDEX PAGES from the Grantor and/or Grantee inexes. Then, after checking that out, get copies of any actual deeds you may want. I have not proofed this but maybe it will get it going and someone can help more. 1. [KYOHIO] Land Records and Deeds in Ohio County Kentucky
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: Barry_Ashby Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kentucky.counties.ohio/7342/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I would like to find out what land in Ohio County my ancestors may have owned and where it was located. To do this I need to see land records and deeds. (Deeds are the legal records for transferring land or property.) For Ohio County what county office keeps land deeds - the County Clerk? How are these deeds indexed - by grantor (seller) and grantee (buyer) or both? And exactly how does one go about obtaining a copy of a specific deed? Has anyone recently obtained a copy of a deed from the Ohio County Clerk? If so, can you provide me with step-by-step instructions? Are mail requests accepted? What are the fees? Thanks, Barry Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
