Hello, can anyone tell me who this Jacob and John are in the 1800 Ohio Co census?? Its a Tax List and no township listed for any of them. Odd thing is there are 2 listings with different KYS1a numbers for John and for James. I don't understand ... why are they listed twice?? I also have James and William and I believe those to be my Wm and his brother James Smeathers... Not a clue who John is..its not Wm's son, we have him b abt 1790 and he would only be 10y old. Someone once said they though the Jacob was our Archibald Jacob but no way, he was not b until 1795... I sure wish I could figure this out...stumped again! thanks, NSmothers "Life ain't in holding a good hand, but playing a good hand well." FORWARDED WITH PERMISSION... Dear All: Some volunteers from the society of the Daughters of the American Revolution ( DAR) have established a wonderful new program for users of Rootsweb. These volunteers will do lookups in their database and records if you think one of your ancestors served in some capacity during the American Revolution. These volunteers have more databases that are available to them than the ones commonly used by the search engines. The process is fairly simple : Go to the DAR message board: There are two ways to do that: > www.rootsweb.com > message boards > topics > organizations and societies > DAR Or if you want the easy way :-) http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=topics.organizations.dar Address your message as follows: subject: DAR Lookup > surname> location > dates In the body of the message put the information regarding the person, Be sure to fill out the surnames box at the bottom since the new search engine will be keying on that item. Leave the email response box checked and you will be notified when the DAR volunteers respond. Give them a week or so to get to your request. We really appreciate their efforts. This info can be key for: a: joining these prestigious organizations ( DAR & SAR) b: sending a request for the copies of the files that were submitted and the information they have available. Many thanks to: Glenda Thompson DAR VIS Volunteer Vice Chrm. Patriot Lookup for organizing this effort and all the many volunteers that are donating their time and effort to us instead of pursuing their own ancestors, Best Regards John A Hansen DAR board admin. BTW: Please forward this message to other lists and boards that each of you are involved in. A word of thanks to each volunteer that does this work and especially the one that responds to your post would probably be highly appreciated.
I have a question if anyone know. My gggg grandfather Wm Smeathers had a friend name James Gentry he played jokes on a lot. I am wondering if anyone knows which one of these might have been him?? thanks, Nena 1. James b.1767/1768 Louisa Co., Vir d.1833 Winchester Co., Kentucky (family#10) 2. James b,1782 Albemarle Co., Vir d.1809 Madison Co., Kentucky Both had a wife named Elizabeth. One was Elizabeth Lyons the other was just Elizabeth. Both had several children. James Gentry was with my gggg grandfather, Wm Smeathers in the Ky Cornstalk Militia in abt 1794...do you have anything on him? In the book Law of the Heart written by Dorothy Gentry [which I have another question on], he is mentioned on pg 148...which says, "Abt 5yrs ago, 1808 to be exact James Gentry and I joined the Cornstalk Militia. Gentry was an Ensign, same as me. I must go see abt him as soon as I get Felty [Valentine] Husk to go with as I may need some protection!...Bill laughed...yeah, that trip that me and Husk played on Gentry when he was scouting acorns for his hogs has never been mentioned since but I will remember the look on his face as long as I live..ha ha!" I have this story what my Bill and his pal Felty did to Gentry. Just from what I have read I guess my grandfather xxxx was well known for playing jokes on his friends! I am wondering if Dorothy Gentry was a Gentry by marriage or if Gentry was her maiden name. I had asked her some questions when I wrote to her in Hartford where she still lives, and she wrote me back in 2000 and said she was 80 yrs old and her husband had died and she had retired from being a newspaper editor of the local newspaper in Harford, I assume. So she never answered my questions except to say she was not kin to the Smeathers. But my Wm Smeathers dau, Betsy Smeathers m John Berry and his 2nd wife Nancy Frazier [Gentry] was widow of Wm Gentry, son of Raleigh Gentry. So I have always been real curious if Dorothy was kin to this Raleigh Gentry line. I can't figure out why she wrote a book on my gggg grandfather if she had no relation to anyone in the book. Then I wonder where she got all the info she has in the book. Much of it she does claim came from the Thomas McCreery story he wrote of my grandfather in 1866 in the Life and Time of William Smothers. If anyone knows info please email me, I would also like to know what newspaper in Hartford she might have been the editor of, there is an article they printed on Wm Smeathers I would like to get a copy of, thanks so much. William Taylor Mercer, 1825-1896, and his wife (married 1847) Rebecca Bradfield, 1830-1867, appear to have had most of their children in Ohio County, some specifically in Fordsville. The children's names were Mary Elizabeth Mercer, b. 1849, George Walter Mercer, b. 1851; William Taylor Mercer, Jr., b. 1852; Thomas Frank Mercer (my great grandfather), b. 1854; Susan Jane Mercer, b. 1855; Samuel Payton Mercer, b. 1858; Martha Ellen Mercer, b. 1860; Willis Alfred Mercer, b. 1862; John David Grant Mercer, b. 1864; and Anna Catherine Mercer, b. 1867. I'd be interested to hear from anyone else researching this family. I'm particularly interested in any information about Rebecca Bradfield, where she came from, who her ancestors/siblings were, etc. William Mercer, Sr.'s parents were James Mercer and Annie Graham, from Washington and Marion Counties, Kentucky, but Annie is thought to have died in Ohio County in 1888. William and most of his children ended up in Edwards and Wabash Counties, Illinois, and William and Rebecca are both buried in Bone Gap, Edwards County, Illinois. I assume they were in Illinois by the time Rebecca died in 1867, so their last couple of kids may have been born in Illinois as well. But William's mother stayed longer than that in Ohio County, Kentucky, and several of William Sr's siblings appear to have stayed in Ohio County - several in Aetnaville. Any information is appreciated.
