(Note: This message is being sent to both the KYBRACKE-L and KYNICHOL-L lists) Hi All, I'm searching for one of the MCDOWELL family lines in Bracken and Nicholas Counties. I've been doing a little tree hunting on one of my gg-grandmothers, Isabelle (McDowell) WOODWARD and I have found what I believe to be evidence that her family moved from Nicholas to Bracken County sometime in the 1840 to 1850 time frame. I have been told the following family occurs in the 1860 Bracken Co Census (Augusta, eastern district): John W (or M) MCDOWELL, age 45 Malinda (or Melissa), age 45 Isabella, age 18 Lucretia, age 16 Eliza J., age 14 Samuel L., age 12 Thomas L., age 10 Ruth A., age 8 At this same address was a John GARRISON, a farm laborer, who later married Lucretia MCDOWELL. The LDS Ancestral File lists this same family, and indicates that this Isabella is Mary Isabella. This corresponds to the name on a death certificate that I have of Mary I. Woodward listing the same parents. I have found this same family in the 1850 Bracken Co Census, but under the name of MCDONALL!! Mary I. Woodward's death certificate states that she was born in Nicholas County in September 1840. I do not have access to an 1840 Bracken Co Census but there is a John MCDOWELL listed in Nicholas County with two individuals, one male and one female, both in the age range of 20 to 30. So I will step out on a limb with this one and say that they are probably the same family. Does anyone know about this family or where they came from? The census lists both parents, John M. MCDOWELL (1815-1889) and Melissa INSKO (1819-1865), as being born in Kentucky and I would be willing to bet that at least John M. McDowell was born in Nicholas Co.
