Moorefield, was born on the place where she now lives, in Nicholas County, Ky., July 20, 1818, and is a daughter of John and Elizabeth (Kincade) Banister; Mr. Banister the father of our subject, was born in Virginia, June 20, 1791, and died Sept. 22, 1864; his wife was born in Garrett [sic] County, Ky., in 1792. The subject of this sketch received a common school education in Nicholas County, was married in Bath County, April 27, 1841, to Samuel Adams, who was born in Nicholas County, Oct. 18, 1818, and died March 28, 1878, leaving to her care four children, viz: Elizabeth, Nancy, Millard and Statire. Mr. Adams was a son of John and Mary (Pinter) Adams, both natives of Nicholas County, Ky. Mrs. Adams is a member of the Presbyterian Church at Moorefield; owns ninety-nine acres of land, which is tilled after her directions; she is a woman of intelligence and well worthy of the high esteem in which she is held by the community in which she lives. #3942: History of Bourbon, Scott, Harrison and Nicholas Counties, Kentucky, ed. by William Henry Perrin, O. L. Baskin & Co., Chicago, 1882. p. 598. [Scott County] [Georgetown City and Precinct] GEORGE L. HAVEN, Georgetown, was born in Kenton County, Ky., in April 1853; his father, Augustus Haven, was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., in February, 1823, and came to Ohio when a child. He was raised in Cincinnati, and became a stockholder and director in Royer's Wheel Company in that city. He married Miss Ellen Longmoor, of Kenton County, Ky. He is the oldest child of his parents, there being four others living. He graduated from Chickering Institute in 1871. In January 1872, he began business with Howell, Gano & Co., as clerk in their wholesale hardware house, and continued four years; in 1876 he became traveling salesman, and until October, 1881, traveled in Kentucky and Tennessee; then he and his father bought the hardware, stores, and queensware establishment on Main Street, under the firm name of A. Haven & Son. #3943: History of Todd County, Kentucky, ed. J. H. Battle, 1884, F. A. Battey Publishing Co., 1884, pp. 294-95. [Elkton Precinct] EGBERT GARTH. In 1812 Elijah Garth came from Albemarle County, Va., to Kentucky, and made settlement near Trenton, in Todd County, on a farm now occupied by Webster C. Garth, and which he had but fairly begun to develop, when (in 1815) he died. He was twice married, first to Miss Fretwell, and second to Miss Elizabeth Wait, and as the result of each union, had four children. None of these are now living, but among their immediate descendants are some of the most worthy families of Todd County. Paschal L. was a son of Elijah Garth, and was born in Albemarle County, Va., and removed with his father's family to Kentucky. He was here reared to maturity; returned to Virginia and married Miss Lucy E. B. Garth, who was born in 1813, in Albemarle County of that State. They settled on a farm long known as the "Dunheath" farm, where Paschal spent the remainder of his days, which terminated in 1865, and where his aged widow is now residing. Their union was blessed with twelve children, five of whom are deceased; four of the surviving ones being residents of Todd County. Paschal Garth had served as a county officer in Todd County, and was a member of the Christian Church. Egbert Garth, whose name heads this sketch, is the third child of Paschal and Lucy E. B. Garth, and was born in the county May 18, 1835. He grew to manhood on his father's farm, or until sixteen years old, when he began his career in mercantile life, first as a salesman in a dry goods house. He was thus employed until he opened a business for himself in 1862. From the year 1865 to 1870 he was retired from business, but in the latter year again embarked in business which he still continues. He owns a good double brick store-room on the south side of the public square, where he has a complete stock of goods of a general character. Mr. Garth is a good business man; has served as Police Judge, and is an esteemed citizen. He was married near Elkton, in December, 1880, to Miss Laura Sumpter, daughter of William C. and Mary Sumpter. She was born in Todd County January 23, 1857. Mrs. Garth is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. Mr. Garth has one child, named Paschal Lee Garth, born May 21, 1884. #3944: Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886. Allen County. ANDREW M. HILBURN is a son of Dempsey Hilburn, who was a native of Georgia, and married Virginia Able, of Mississipi; she, at her death, left a family of eight children. Dempsey Hilburn after his marriage removed to Sumner County, Tenn., where he was engaged in agricultural pursuits, and accumulated a fine property, which, at his death, was left, with his children, in charge of a relative. The property was lavishly spent, the children left penniless and soon after bound to different parties. Andrew M. was born December 25, 1845; when only eight years old, he was bound to one Presley Venable, with whom he remained about eight years, when, upon the death of the latter, our subject took charge of the farm. In September, 1861, he enlisted as a soldier in the First Tennessee Confederate Cavalry, in which he served sixteen months, and was engaged in the battle of Shiloh, after which he was attacked by typhoid fever; he was able to return to his command in June, 1862, and with it participated in the engagements at Corinth and Iuka, Miss.; after his discharge from the army, he returned to the Venable farm and remained there until 1867, with the exception of eight months spent in Illinois. On the 3d of September, 1868, he married Malinda E., daughter of A. J. Newman, of Allen County, Ky. Their union has been blessed by the birth of five children, namely: Minnie Laura (deceased), Edward L., born July 25, 1872; Hallie Emma, July 6, 1875; Boyd Fletcher, July 5, 1880, and Myrta Green, September 18, 1883. After his marriage Mr. Hilburn continued to follow agricultural pursuits, in which he was very successful, until 1877, when he leased his farm and engaged in the merchandise trade for G. F. Martin, with whom he took a partnership in 1880; in 1881 he sold his farm and gave all his attention to the trade. In 1884 he bought the Martin interest, and up to the present time he has owned the entire business, in which he has been uniformly successful. In 1883 his health became so impaired that he suspended business for awhile and made a tour of a few months to the West and bought some land in Kansas, with a view of removing to that State, which he afterward found would not be possible, except through the sacrifice of much property; and he therefore abandoned the intention. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, with which he united in 1871; Mrs. H. has been a member of the same church from a much earlier date. He is a Master Mason and a member of Graham Lodge, No. 208. He is a Democrat but has no political aspiration; is temperate in habits and favors the cause of temperance by his example. He started in life without means and but little education; his close application has given him a practical business education, which, with his untiring energy, has brought him a large reward in the way of the world's goods. His views are liberal and his hand is always open to the call of charity. #3945: History of Bourbon, Scott, Harrison and Nicholas Counties, Kentucky, ed. by William Henry Perrin, O. L. Baskin & Co., Chicago, 1882. p. 574. [Bourbon County] [Ruddel's Mills Precinct] DARWIN D. EADS, physician, Ruddel's Mills; was born in Harrison County, Ky., May 11, 1836, son of John and Ellen (McMillan) Eads; he is a native of Spottsylvania [sic] County, Va., coming to Kentucky about 1810, but having been married in Virginia, and his wife dying previous to his leaving that State. Mr. John Eads was a farmer, and passed the best part of his life in Harrison County, where he died in 1836, his wife surviving him and marrying, in 1842, Wm. W. Bowman, of Bourbon County, afterward moving to Illinois, where she is still residing. Our subject remained on the farm until sixteen years of age, when he entered the Ohio Weslyan University, at Delaware, Ohio, which he left while in his junior year. In the fall of 1857 he entered Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, from which institution he graduated in 1859, and located at Ruddel's Mills, where he has since had a lucrative practice. Dr. Eads was first married in 1862, to Miss Jennie, daughter of Thomas Isgrig, of Harrison County; she died, and Dr. Eads married his second wife Miss Anna, daughter of Frank Adair, of this county, who died in 1876, leaving one child, Benjamin Brindly Eads, now eleven years old. For his third wife, Dr. Eads married Miss Avonia Matheny, daughter of Dr. Matheny of Louisville. Mr. and Mrs. Eads are members of the M. E. Church, and he is a Mason and an Odd Fellow; also a Democrat, but taking no part in politics.
