    1. [KYNICHOL] Pre-1795 Roll Call: Jacob Eaton
    2. Judy Martin
    3. Jacob Eaton first appears on the 1795 "First Census" in Mason County, KY and through 1807. That portion of the county where he lived became a part of Nicholas County when it was formed in 1808. According to a biographical sketch of Jacob's grandson, Rev. Harrison Eaton, published in "History of Shelby County, Missouri, 1911", p. 307, " Jacob Eaton was a native of England, whence he came to America when a young man, becoming an early settler of Kentucky, and later coming to Missouri where he passed the closing years of his life." The biographical sketch of Jacob's grandson, Rev. John Eaton, published in the same history, p. 976, Jacob Eaton immigrated into Kentucky from the State of Tennessee (unproven). Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Judy Martin nanajudy1@uswest.net

    3. This is really off the wall as far as connected facts are concerned, but....a Joseph A. Hopkins married a Margaret Murphy in Nicholas Co. on or about 28 Sep 1812. 3. Jeannie, That was certainly worth reading. I began my search last Jan. and have learned so much! In fact, I have learned enough to know that I still have A LOT TO LEARN! However, I have been blessed with a dear friend who is an experienced genealogist who is editing my data and putting it on a "floppy disk(?)" for me. He gently makes suggestions on where to search and gently chastises me if I forget to do something I should have known better. His help is priceless as well as his friendship. I would not be anywhere as far along in my endeavor without his guidance. Many have also kindly helped on the internet, but I do go back and get my own "proof". The thrill is there each time you make a "find". The time and energy you, and other list managers put in to this task should not be ignored either. I am truly blessed by having two great sources of help and information. Kay

    2. Not sure if my James James was there by 1795. He bought the land that he had been living on from Moses Mitchell in 1797. I have no idea when he arrived. They originally came from S. C. but had been in Pa. Malinda James

    2. Jacob HAM entered a deed in the March court of 1793 for 1000 acres "on the waters of the Hinkston fork of the Licking in the County of Bourbon." Jacob and his family came from Berkeley County , Virginia (now West Virginia). This land is on the Jackstown Road just inside Nicholas County near the boundary with Bourbon. To Marla M (the orginator of this query)...Nicholas County was formed on June 1, 1800 from Mason and Bourbon Counties.

    3. Perrin does mention a Joseph HOPKINS, but as a school teacher near Mt. Pisgah Church in the county in 1815. Fledgling lawyers many times paid their way by teaching school while 'reading' the law. Chuck At 11:02 AM 9/15/99 EDT, you wrote: >Chuck, >Thank you for reply. 3. Carolyn, Perrin's 'History of Bourbon, Scott, Harrison & Nicholas Counties' lists members of Nicholas Co legal profession in the 1816-1820 era as: R. W. Weber, Angus C. McCoy, Thomas P. Tall, Robert C. Hall, Jonathan M. Tanner, & General A. S. Hughes. Some careful reading might produce more names. It seems the prerequisites for the shingle were the ability to read the English language & to READ the LAW with an established practice for an undetermined time. 2. Chuck, It makes sense that our Joseph was a teacher also. His son Milton Hopkins left home at the age of 15 (after leaving to Rush Co, IN with his Mother after the death of his father) to 'get' an education when his stepfather refused to help him with his education. Milton became a lawyer, a teacher and a minister. Now I need to be able to find more information on this Joseph and find a connection. I have been unable to find birth records for Milton but do know through Bible records he was born in Nicholas Co. in 1821. This may be our man!!! Thank you so much. Carolyn
