    2. Jean Dalrymple
    3. AGAIN... Here is one of Sandi's tips... well worth passing on.... If you are subscribed to her list then just delete.. if not you may want to check this out and subscribe... this is NOT a list for queries... just for learnin'.. Have a great day.. Jeannie <>< TIP #262 - RESIDENTS OF THE OLD KENTUCKY FORTS AND SETTLEMENTS - PART 1: Early in my contributions to this research site, I ran a series on the old Kentucky forts and settlements. One thing was missing - a comprehensive list of those who lived there. Recently, I found a book entitled "Kentucky in Retrospect - Noteworthy Personages and Events in Kentucky History 192-1967. The original version was published in 1942 for the Sesquicentennial of the Statehood of Kentucky; it was reprinted and updated in 1967 by G. Glenn Clift and the Kentucky Historical Society. I am going to abstract information from the section on the old forts and settlements and add other data as I go along. Many names are found at the forts and are supposed to be relatively complete. However, please refer back to precious tips as I see a few names are missing. FORT BOONESBOROUGH: This fort was established in 1775 in current day Madison Co, on the south bank of the Kentucky River. In February of this year, Capt Wm. TWITTY, James COBURN, James BRIDGES, Thomas JOHNSON, John HART, WM. HICKS, James PEEKE and Felix WALKER came from Rutherford Co KY. They traveled on to the Watauga River (Tennessee River) awaiting the signing of the treaty with the Cherokee Indians. Daniel BOONE was then sent into the area as an agent for the Transylvania Company. The men mentioned above under Capt. Twitty and Boone united and proceeded into Kentucky. Those with the Transylvania Company included Thomas HART, Nathaniel HART, David HART, John LUTTRELL, William JOHNSON and James HOGG from Orange Co VA and John WILLIAMS, Leonard Hendley BULLOCK and Col. Richard HENDERSON from Granville, NC. A petition was issued of the Transylvanians to the Virginia Convention in May 1776 and contained the following names (per the Filson Club Publication #16.) James HARROD, Abm. HITE, Jr, Patrick DORANE, Ralph NAILOR, Robt. ATKINSON, Robt. NAILOR, John MAXFIELD, Sam. POTTINGER, Barnerd WALTER, Hugh M'MILLION, John KILPATRICK, Robt. On Oct. 14, 1779, there was a seige at Boonesborough there were supposedly only 60 at the fort in contrast to 340 Indians. Depositions taken over the years at Richmond, KY of 1801-1806, 1907, 1808, 1811 and 1814 by pioneers at Boonesborough which showed the following names deposed and the dates they supposedly arrived at the fort if shown: James ANDERSON, Thos. 3. Linda, I have also been to Mt. Pleasant Cemetery with Brunker Harney. My great-grandmother, Jane Harney Varner, was Brunker's aunt. Brunker is certainly an interesting person. I spent several hours at his house in May and was so busy listening that I found it hard to take notes. I will probably be visiting him again next month when several members of my family will be spending the weekend in Harrison and Nicholas Counties to do some research together. I don't know a great deal about my Harney line yet. I know that Peter and Catherine Luckey Harney who are buried at Mt. Pleasant were my gg-grandparents. Brunker told me that Peter's father was Thomas Harney, and that Thomas was the son of Hiram Harney. I think Hiram's father was Mills, and another Thomas was the father of Mills. My ggg-gf, Noah Varner, was married to a woman named Sallie Sparks. Their son, Francis Marion, brother of my gg-gf E. N. Varner, was married to Sarah Catharine Harney, daughter of Thomas and Annie Feeback Harney. Amidst charges of adultery and other other ugly stuff, Noah divorced Sallie, Francis divorced Sarah, and Noah ended up married to Sarah. I had quite an interesting afternoon at the state archives the day I discovered that. I haven't had a chance to determine if Sarah's father and Peter's father were the same Thomas Harney, but hope to get to that soon. Based solely on dates, it's possible that Peter and Sarah could have been siblings, but I don' t have any sort of evidence yet. Thomas and Annie were married 08 Dec 1821. Peter was born 09 May 1831. Sarah was born 11 Jun 1836. I'm going to have to do some more digging. I haven't been to Republican Cemetery yet. I have passed the cemetery a few times, but have never stopped. I do have some relatives there, but didn't know that the last time I was in Nicholas County. Hopefully, we can stop by there on next month's trip. If not, I'll have to venture over there another weekend. I live in Scott County, not all that far from Nicholas County. Are you the Linda Harney McDonald who has a web site with lots of Harney information on it? Valarie

Any help with gaining access to the cemetery would be most appreciated. > Thanks, > Valarie Did you know that there are a lot of Harney's buried at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery and the Republican Cemetery near Cynthiana, KY? We visited there this past summer and found many. I believe there was a lot of Varner's also, but I was looking for Harney's and so am not sure. We were fortunate to be introduced to a Brunker Harney that took us to the My Pleasant Cem and gave us a run-down on the relationship to how the Harney's were related to the Feeback's and Luckey's. I took some notes, but am not sure how they are related to the James R. Harney I am researching. If I can give you any more info that I may have from this cemetery, let me know. Linda

I feel that my Harney's came from Nicholas County or maybe Bourbon Cty. My last link is James R. Harney b 16 July 1837. He was married twice. Mary Elizabeth Catlin and Elizabeth May Kellum. I am not sure which was his first wife, but I think Mary. He died 31 Oct. 1924 and I have info that Mary E. was b 13 July 1856 and d 9 June 1934. I think that she is the mother of his 6 children. James died in Anderson, IN and his death record states that he was born in Rush Cty. Not much to go on, but if you have any info you could share with me I may be able to add to my research. Hope to hear from you. Linda
