Hi Chuck, My Dayton line goes back to Garrett and Mary Ann Dayton, pioneer Kentucky Daytons who arrived @1793, supposedly from Maryland. Their son, William Garrett Dayton, b. in KY in 1794, m. Rebecca Hildreth, dau. of Squire Hildreth and Sarah Standiford, and had 3 sons (Squire Hildreth, William M. and John Robert) and several daughters. My line descends through the eldest son, Squire. Squire and his wife, Armilda McDowell (dau. of Thomas McDowell and Isabel Hooton), had 2 sons and several daughters. The elder son was my great uncle Theb and the younger was my great-grandfather, T.W. ("Dick") Dayton. The families were first in Bourbon and Mason Counties. Later their area became Nicholas County and even later, Robertson County. Squire and his descendants lived in and around the Town of Mt. Olivet. As a side benefit to my research, I've made the e-quaintance of several third cousin descendants. (Hi, Jack, Norma, Vera and Nancy, my Standiford cousin.) None of us, however, has figured out yet where Garrett and Mary Ann Dayton came from. I'd love to have any new information on any branch of Garrett's descendants, and I'm sure my third cousins would as well. Thanks for the assist! >Helen, Thomas "Old Stonehammer" Metcalfe was governor of Kentucky from >1828-1832. And his home, "Forest Retreat" (now a bed and breakfast) is located on US 68 between the turnoff to Carlisle and Ellisville. Think he might be buried there. My connection is that he sent letters to the pension folks testifying to my ancestor's (Edward Vivion Brooking) service in the War of 1812. When I requested pension information from NARA, I got the unexpected pleasure of copies of two letters written by Thomas Metcalfe on behalf of my gggg-grandfather. Others mentioned in the letters (with pending bounty land applications) include: John Standiford Mrs. Mary Berry, widow of Col. Robert Berry Abraham Shultz (or Shelty) - difficult to make out George Blake Henry Bramlette Nancy (I think) Barlow Samuel McKune Jeremiah Terry Dick Forston researching SNAPP, BROOKING, HERNDON, ALLISON(?), HARVIN, SHEPHERD in Nicholas/Fleming/Mason Counties
Helen, Thomas "Old Stonehammer" Metcalfe was governor of Kentucky from 1828-1832. Thomas was a stonemason by trade, hence his nickname. The finest examples of stone buildings in (especially) Bourbon County are the work of Thomas and his uncle (?), master stonemason John Metcalfe. There is no doubt he was a resident of Nicholas County as he was enumerated in Nicholas County every census year from 1810 to 1850. In the 1850 Census for Nicholas County (District 2, Dwelling 35, Family 36), he was living (Age 70, b. Virginia) his retirement in a hotel with his wife Nancy (Age 61, also b. Virginia). In this day, we would probably call Thomas a "career politician". The Political Graveyard at http://politicalgraveyard.com/bio has a synopsis of his political and military career. To see a portrait of Thomas Metcalfe go to: http://www.kdla.state.ky.us/arch/Govphoto/Metcalfe.htm The Metcalfe family was from Fauquier Co., Virginia. My interest in the Metcalfes comes from the fact that they had business dealings with my Dayton ancestors, who were also stonemasons.
