Guess I am going to have to take a look at the actual mg record the next time I am in Ky. Pg 58, Nelson Co Mgs 1785-1800, Nelson Co Genealogists: George Howard & Polly Merrifield, bond 14 Nov 1798; m 15 Nov 1798. surety Thomas Sweets Polly, d/o Thomas Merrifield m by James Chambers, from Min Ret. Do not know IF Thomas gave consent for Polly to marry George; but says she is d/o Thomas. ASSUMING that George is at least 21 at mg--b 1777; Polly would be about the same age--Because--as I have stated before-- Thomas was born ca 1745 Frederick Co, Va; is named on a 1765 land record in Frederick Co, Va; is listed on the 1775 payroll list of Ft Pitt & is mentioned in the Clark Papers--IL Expedition 1781-1784. Now--Thomas Merrifield (JR?) m Nelly Matthew 23 Feb 1795 Nelson Co--she d/o Paul Matthews (also listed in index of Clark Papers--b ca 1740-50). Thomas Sr Merrifield m Mrs Jenny Hoofnagle, widow 20 Jun 1796 (believe she MAY be the widow of Peter Hoofnagle). Then a Thomas Merrifield m Rachel Kennedy who is unhappy with him & leaves him (may be the Rachel Merrifield 1810 Washington Co, KY). Samuel Merryfield/Merrifield/Marifield Jr; Thomas Merryfield/Marifield/Minnifield; Richard Marifield/Merryfield/Merrifield; John Merryfield/Merrifield and Alexander Merryfield/Merrifield all named in the 4 Apr 1765 land record of Frederick Co, Va. I believe that Alexander (b 4 Apr 1765, m Rachael Boone 1787 Jefferson Co, Ky, buried at Bloomfield, Nelson, Ky) is the s/o Thomas--not the son of Samuel Merrifield SR (the accepted genealogy of the Merrifield Family). It is highly unlikely that Samuel Sr & wife Mary M. (not Elizabeth) had a son born the same day as the land record in Frederick Co--gives land to Samuel Jr, lists household items & names sons (above) & daus. Mary, Rachel, Dinah & Elizabeth. Davis Merrifield is in Daviess Co, Ky, also-- he is s/o John & Priscilla Davis Merrifield (m 1788 Nelson Co). John & Priscilla Davis Merrifield were members of the Shaker Community at South Union, Ky. Priscilla d 1826 & is buried in the Shaker Cem. Modern day Merrifield researchers says that John & Priscilla was divorced because of the celibacy requirement of the Shakers but doesn't offer any proof/record of their position. Know that John Merrifield JR (wife Sarah Welsh-m 1816 Hardin Co) sold land to Alexander Merrifield 1819 Hardin Co. To be John Jr --he is s/o John & Priscilla Davis Merrifield, not the s/o Alexander & Rachel Boone Merrifield. Researchers says that Samuel Sr b ca 1717-1720 & wife Mary (M. not Elizabeth--born about the same time). Since Samuel transported 1738-ish alone--married in Va to Mary M. ???? Making childen start being born 174?--with Samuel Jr being the eldest. But we know that those that were transported --served at least 7 years-- I doubt if Samuel Sr would have married much before 1745 (which falls into line with approx. births of children). George Howard is 1810 Hardin Co, pg 49: 20010 - 40111-00--has to be the Hodgenville area because same page of census has: Samuel LaRue, Alexander McDougal (from NC, served in the Rev War & was a minister, died at Hodgenville at 100+), Abraham Enlow, etc. There isn't a George Howard in Hardin Co 1820-- The index of "Early Hardin Co Census & Tax Lists 1793 - 1836" gives: George Howard pg 49: 1810 Cen George H. Howard: p 25: Sep 21, 1805 Southwardly Dist, Book 2 tax list George H./H. George Howard: p 101: 1825 tax list George W. (all the listings for George Howard- with or without middle initials). I showed George was in Grayson Co 1820. 1830 Cens: George Howard: George: not stated, Daviess, Ky p 203: 0000010000000 - no females (listed with: John G. Went through entire 1850 Cen Index of the US re: George Howard; at the end of the listing of George--started listing other Howards--extracted the oldest 1st listed since I requested George Howard b ca 1777 MD, d Ky. You can compare the earlier censuses to the 1850 cen listings of the other Howards of Meade (George of Meade b ca 1795 KY). George of Daviess Co b ca 1810 MD (Ann-1850 Daviess b 1774 MD--would not have come to Ky until after 1810-George 1830 Daviess Co also b ca 1774 & husband of Ann of the 1850 Cen). Etc, etc. As you will notice: 1810 Cen Hardin Co: there is a female 45+ in the hh of George (to 45) & wife (to 45). IF this is George & Polly (Mary) Merrifield Howard-- who is the older female-- is she a Howard or Merrifield???? By 1820--This George is in Grayson Co. UNLESS: I can go through the 1810, 1820 Censuses of Nelson page by page. None listed in the census index & no transcription has been done of the 1810, 1820, 1830 of Nelson. (I am currently working on transcribing the 1810 Cen of Nelson; have done the 1820 Bullitt Co & is on line at the website- also the 1830 (I think) & the 1870 Cen of Bullitt--all on the website). Need to do more checking of 1820 Grayson Co to see who the other Howards are that was there too. I THINK Grayson Co is where there was a Shaker Community but have to check it out. I THINK Grayson Co is Bowling Green & the Shaker Community was near Bowling Green. Am not too familiar with that part of Ky tho Grayson Co borders on Tn & I THINK Williamson Co, Tn. (Williamson Co, Tn is where Alexander, John & Thomas MARYFIELD was in 1806, listed in the tax record & Thomas MARYFIELD m Maria Lashorn 1806- mg record- lose this Thomas until he shows up in 1820 Cen & 1825 tax list Hardin Co, died 1826 Hardin Co with Marie Merrifield filing to be exectx with John Rogers as her surety- have found a Lashorn male in Va but was from PA- I think the area of Pa (Washington Co) that flipped back and forth between VA, Pa in a matter of months-next to Monongalia Co, Va- but then the original Co of Monongalia Co is parent to 13 Counties & 3 of them being in PA).
