Pat Craven passed away yesterday. She will be remembered for the work she did in the old records room.
thanks for letting us know. Carlene
Dee, Sorry to hear about Pat. I know all the hard work she did in the old records at the Court House basement. They were her "baby" and she really didn't like to share them with anyone. She kept a very close eye on anyone using them. I don't think anyone knew those records like she did!!! Those of us who met her deffinately will not forget her!!! I, too, dearly love the old records & would hate to see something happen to them!!! In the years of using them--have come to the relization that we can actually damage the records by handling them. One doesn't realize what the oils from your hands can do to the old records. Pat just got there way before I did!!! KY is so open & people gets to go in and search through the old records at will. They don't know how lucky they are!!! Why destroy them??? Such a thing ISN'T possible in IL-you can work with the indexes but the Clerks get the old will records for you to see. Not you doing it yourself like in KY. Some of the Cos. in IN you can't even get records out of. There is positives to both type of systems. In IL, you don't have to worry about things not being there. I got ahold of a very old will here in IL & felt guilty for handling it!!! The paper was very brittle & pieces fell off!!! I gave it back real QUICK!!! The last thing I want to do is to be a party to destroying records-- that is WHY it is so important to transcribe the old records into a form that is nicer for someone to use than the originals!! Once they are gone-- they can never be replaced!!! Where's the microfilm-IF you can get a good copy?????
