    3. The part of the statement below that Harrodsburg was designated as county seat of Fincastle County is apparently in error because the county court of Fincastle was held at the lead mines in what is now Wythe co. Va. The lead mines were located near Fort Chiswell along the New River. If anyone wants to know the location further, Interstate 77 from Wytheville, Va. toward Charlotte NC crosses New River at the old shot tower where the lead from the mines was used to make shot. The lead mine was on the NW side of New River at Austinville, of course there were other mines also. You can see a picture of the Shot Tower on my website. 2. Thanks, Virginia. I assumed you were quoting from the source. For your info. and anybody else's, Mercer Co. (Harrodsburg) has excellent records. Just one exception, in the 19th century when they started requiring on the marriage bonds various kinds of additional information, the clerks NEVER put it in. Adjoining Anderson Co. didn't preserve its records too well, but they were great about putting on that info. on the marriage bonds. Bob

    3. Bob, Thank you, it helps to know what is available at the local level. That is the place (the local level)I most enjoy doing research. It is most unfortunate that all data was not recorded. However, I contacted a county (in another state) for marriage information from the 1920s and was informed the marriage applications were disposed of after a period of time, so were not available. I asked if this was the current practice and the clerk informed me yes they currently dispose of applications after a period of time. So even today, when genealogy is a very big interest for many folks, records are still being lost to future researchers. Regards, Virginia

    3. I hope that this can help someone in their searching. I have a book call "Virginia Genealogical Research" by George K Schweitzer, PhD, ScD. Fincastle County, Virginia it says formed in 1772 from Botetourt County, became extinct in 1777 when it was divided into Montgomery and Washington Counties, see these counties for records, especially Montgomery County. Montgomery County, Virginia(same book) County Seat: Christiansburg(24073), formed in 1776 from Fincastle County and later Botetourt and Pulaski Counties see VA Genealogist 18 (1974). Then it lists the records that availible and libaries. I also have the book, "Kentucy Genealogical Research," by George K Schweitzer, PhD, ScD. Jefferson County, KY: formed in 1780 from Kentucy County, VA, couny seat Louisville (40202) see detailed record list in S W Thomas, Filson Club Quarterly 44 (1970)321. Then lists records, libraries, and historical societies. Nelson County, KY: Form 1784/5 from Jefferson County, county seat Bardstown(40004). Then lists the records, libraries and historical society. If you need to know what records, let me know. 3. I found this in "The Handy Book for Genealogists" by Everton Publishers; Long before any white man had explored the entire Kentucky area, it was claimed by Virginia as part of her Augusta County. It was included in the Virginia County of 1584. The first permanent settlement in Kentucky was at Harrodsburg in 1774. Boone was not the first to investigate the possiblities of Kentucky. The eastern section of the area was explored by Dr. Thomas Walker as early as 1750. Twenty five years later the Transylvania Co. was organized ..under Col Richard Henderson of N. C. ..He purchased almost half of what is now the state of Ky, all land between the Ky River in the central part of the state and the Cumberland River in the western part. Previous to these explorations all of Kentucky had been made part of Fincastle County, Virginia. During Boone's activities in the section, Kentucky was designated as Kentucky County, Virginia. This designation was made in Dec 1776. In 1780 it was divided into three counties, Fayette, Jefferson and Lincoln. By 1790 those three counties were subdivided in nine counties, Mason, Bourbon, Woodford, Fayette, Madison, Jefferson, Mercer, Nelson and Lincoln. Dorothy

    3. Bob, I quoted from the source exactly as written in the book: On further reading I found this data in 'Ancestry's RedBook American State, County & Town Sources' Edited by Alice Eichholz, Ancestry 1992 When the French and Indian War (Seven Years War) ended, the Ohio River was designated as the boundary between settlers and native inhabitants. Kentucky was under the jurisdiction of Augusta County, Virginia. Fincastle County, Virginia, was organized in 1772 to include all of present-day Kentucky with Harrodsburg designated the county seat. That is why I quoted from the source; the book is available at many local genealogical libraries. The quote is from the first paragraph on page 246. However, the next two sentences contradict the previous: The following year the McAfee brothers and others surveyed land along the Salt River, In 1774, under James Harrod, Harrodsburg was founded as the first permanent English settlement in Kentucky by a group that arrived via the Ohio River. Regards, Virginia

    2. I am a little puzzled, Virginia, that Harrodsburg would have been designated a county seat in 1772, since there was nobody there until 1774. And even then, they simply staked some claims and went back east, returning only in 1775. Surely a town was not given a name when there wasn't one and when nobody had been there.
