Seeking parents and or/siblings for Nancy NUTTERFIELD, born 1817, married John Hensley, about 1835,probably in Oldham Co.Ky., children James, John, Eliza E and Nancy J... Probably born Oldham, or Nelson, or Spencer Counties...Any help appreciated... Dick Carter [email protected]
I am new to this list and searching for the family WILKINSON. My grandmother was a Wilkinson, her father was GEORGE A. V. Wilkinson. HIs parents were THOMAS D. Wilkinson and SARAH JANE Wilkinson (her maiden name). Thomas and Sarah were born and married in Kentucky but ultimately moved to Missouri where the last 5 of their 11 children were born. I am looking for the ancestors of this couple (Thomas D. & Sarah Wilkinson). I believe that their parents were born in Virginia and migrated to Kentucky. An old family story is that two Wilkinson brothers married two Dean sisters and a child of each of these marriages married. This I assume to be Thomas and Sarah but I am not sure and now I'm questioning the accuracy of this handed down story. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Carol from Michigan
Bob, Although my Herrell lines did not go to Kentucky early, I have followed several of those who were on the forefront of the frontier in Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee and find it quite interesting! I've watched as John, James, Richard, Gilbert, Walter, George and other Harrells, Harrolls etc. worked their way from indentured servants in Northumberland Co. Va to land owners and participating in the local government. Moving to new lands west of the Blue Ridge Mountain, enduring the Indian raids during the French and Indian War and later generations moving further west. It seems the lands of Kentucky drew them with a magnetic force they could not resist. There was James Harroll who settled on Little Walker Mountain, near Abingdon, Va. in 1769 where his young son, Robert, fought with Evan Shelby at Point Pleasant in 1774. Robert was Horsemaster during the building of the wagon road into Kentucky and later settled in Warren County, Ky. William Herrell, who was assigned along with Ephraim Drake, Edward Sharpe and Richard Stanton to scout along the Warrior Path to ascertain whether Indians were gathering for raids on the settlements of SW Va. Captain William Russell also ordered them to locate the river which separated the lands in Kentucky from the Cherokee lands in NC (TN). The Scouts traveled 21 days and reported back to Russell. These men were former long hunters who knew Kentucky well and, as Capt. Russell wrote, were men of "great veracity". Surveyors were in Ky at the time and locating the treaty line was of great importance to those claiming land in the area. I tend to get carried away with pioneer stories! G. I know of an old cemetery in Nelson County with deteriorating tombstones and even unmarked slave graves there. I you could give me Names/DOB, I could go look and take pictures of stones there. According to my files, Mathew Cissell born 20 Feb 1775 St. Mary's County, Maryland died 23 Jan 1846 in Marion county, KY. Sarah Howard his wife born 1780 in St. Mary's County, Maryland died 1837 Marion County, KY. Both buried at St. Charles Cemetery, Marion County, KY As Census records point out they only had two girls, but 4 boys so I'm short 2 boys. The only girls I have for then is Elizabeth Cissell and Harriett E. Cissell. No Mary Cissells as daughters of Mathew Cissell and Sarah Howard. I'm very confident I have it correctly when I say Peter Cissell married Eleanor Howard a sister of Thomas Howard. I Think studying more on Peter Cissell will also prove that I'm correct. All the clues point to that. Valentine Hefner married Priscilla Burch. Valentine Hefner was a witness on will of Thomas Howard. Mary Cissell daughter of Peter Cissell and Eleanor was not married when Thomas Howard made his will, and when she did marry she married John Hanson Burch brother of Priscilla Burch, their other brother Alexander "Sandy Burch married Eleanor Cissell daughter of Peter Cissell and Eleanor Howard. It's the only Mary Cissell alive at that time that fits as a niece of Thomas Howard. Mary Cissell daughter of John Baptist Cissell married Charles Howard but they were already married by 22 Dec 1796 Nelson County, KY. Thomas Howard would not of referred to her as Mary Cissell his niece, because he already knew she was married, without mentioning her husband. I wish I had complete will of Thomas Howard not the abbreviated version as it might list other relationships, also there was probably an Account, or Inventory of his Estate which would shed more light on subject. I don't think Thomas Howard had brothers. The History of Nelson County concerning Edward Howard states when he died he will his land over to his son Thomas Howard, had Edward Howard have had other sons they would have been mentioned, I suppose if he did have sons other than Thomas They could have died, before their father, but I think somewhere in the History it says Edward Howard only had one son. I think we just need to study Peter Cissell more, and when he dies look carefully at whose a witness, If we find and Edward Howard's on any document of Peter Cissell, then I think it's more obvious than ever. Did Peter Cissell and Eleanor his wife Come to Nelson County, KY. Where were they found living in Nelson County, KY if they did. Do we have a will or Account or Inventory of Peter Cissell, I need every record we can find on him. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, March 12, 2005 11:53 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [KYNELSON-L] Mathew Cissell and Sarah Howard Don't know if this will help or not--- Still looking for Matthew Cissell in 1800 & 1820 but found: 1810 Washington Co, Ky- not stated Matthew Cissell 2201-20010-01 (4 son? 2 daus - male 45+) 1830 Washington Co, Ky Matthew Cissell 0001000200000-f 1200000010000 (Mattew Sr, dec'd??-- wife eldest female? 2 youngest sons in 1820 + one more unless one is w'd son's child?? 1 more dau??) Mr. Hearl, thank you for including this information on the Harrell family. I felt guilty that I did not include them in my history of northeastern Nelson Co., but I didn't know as much as I needed to in order to include them. They were an important pioneer Nelson Co. family Bob Moore.
Thanks for including West Virginia. Too many such lists fail to include those counties. Bob Moore
Yes, Mary, this Processioners' Book was an interesting contribution. I trust that the person who reads your posting will realize that a great, great part of this does not apply to present-day Nelson Co. (The reader should recall also that although the records were stored and remained in Nelson Co., that these land office records on these dates concerned old Jefferson Co. - including present-day Nelson.) At the extreme it mentions Panther Creek, which probably would be today somewhere around Daviess Co. Floyd's Fork would be in the Louisville area. Cartwright's is probably in Washington Co. Some of the Daviess Co. land, by the way, involves George Mason of Fairfax Co., Va., whom some credit with the inclusion of the Bill of Rights in the Constitution. The user of these records should also keep in mind that a great portion of the people mentioned never came to Kentucky, and they sold their land to someone else. I noticed one entry that said it was 30 miles from Simpson Creek to Harrodsburg. I believe the pioneer who wrote that was just a little off on his distances. I hope all this information will be published some day. Bob This is another matter that shows the value of learning the streams in a given area.

>> Twenty five years later the Transylvania Co. was organized ..under Col >> Richard Henderson of N. C. ..He purchased almost half of what is now the >> state of Ky, all land between the Ky River in the central part of the >> state and the Cumberland River in the western part. << Note: It should be pointed out that the above purchase by Richard Henderson was voided by NC and Virginia and he was allotted land on the Ohio River, as I understand it. A portion of the area which Henderson tried to take control of in Kentucky was already occupied by James Harrod and many other early settlers and when Daniel Boone began laying out land for settlers, the farms were not properly surveyed and nobody knew where their boundaries were. As a result, Virginia sent in public surveyors and finally got the mess straightened out. Infact, James Harrod, George Clark, Benjamin Logan and several other prominent men complained to the Virginia and NC governments resulting in the action against Henderson. Also, the fact that Henderson attempted to establish a new state had a lot to do with him losing his "empire". Read the book "Daniel Boone" by Bakeless for more Boone "bungles". Hi Chris, I'm looking for my 4th ggrandfather David L. May. I went to Bardstown in september & searched, but I couldn't find him. Family info says he was born in Nelson or Hardin Co.'s abt 1802. I don't know anything more. He is my brickwall. I don't know the names of his parents or if he had any siblings. I do know he was married to Rebecca VanWinkle in 1825. They got married in Perry Co. Indiana. Their son James Deforest May is my line. I don't know what the L. stands for. There are a bunch of May's in the part of Ky, but I can't seem to make the connection with any of them. I would love to find his parents & country of origin. Chris, If you have time, I would love for you to look around for me. I kind of think it's hopeless, but I guess anything is possible! Thanks, Cindy Meeks

Yes very possible, but I try to use actual Marriage date, so that's what I want to have documented. I had all this before I switched computers, just need to do the download again from my old Genealogy program. Thank you for the correction to 'Ancestry's RedBook'; it pays to have multiple sources of data available. I have several of Dr. Schweitzer's books, but not the one on Virginia. Regards, Virginia
For those of you who need to know when the counties of Virginia were formed and the parent counties, I have a VA. County Evolution Chart which you are welcome to print and use. It includes all counties formed under VA jurisdiction. Some early counties of Kentucky. Go to this site and click on VA County Chart on upper left of page. Note: It prints several pages, a dozen or more. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~harrelld I hope this helps. G. Lee Hearl Authentic Appalachian Storyteller Abingdon, Va.
The Ohio Reddicks aren't my line. However, I have researched them a little, though I don't recognize Eva. Many of the Ohio Reddicks are descended from a Scot-Irish line from Butler Co PA. They are fairly well documented. Cheers, Paul Reddick
