I've hit a brickwall with my 4th ggrandfather David L. May. I'm looking for his parents. He died in Perry Co. In in 1879. His obit from Perry Co. says he was born in Hardin Co. I believe is was 1802. I went to Nelson & Hardin Co's & searched the records, but could not find any trace of him. So, I could not find his parents. I have not been to Perry Co, In in person. The genealogist there looked up his obit for me & told me what it said. But I did go to KY. There are ALOT of May's in both counties in KY, but I could tie them to David. I even joined the May surname project at www.familytreedna.com My paternal uncle gave a sample, but so far no luck. Can anyone give me a reason WHY he would not be found in either Hardin OR Nelson Co? Thanks, Cindy Meeks

Nelson Co. did not exist until 1785, when it was formed out of Jefferson. I looked in the records of Nelson Co. marriages for 1785 to 1800, and there is no such marriage. There are very few marriages recorded in Jefferson Co. from 1780 (year of its formation) through 1785, and none of them is for the couple you are interested in. Bob Moore, Lexington

    2. Sherrie, Go to the Nelson Co website on-line. There you will find the tithables of Nelson Co 1785-1791. In them you will find: Stovall, Isikiah (prob Hezekiah)1 Joshua Hobbs's list 1790-1 tithe paid Stovall, John 1tithe, Daid Cox's list 1786 Stovall, John 1 thithe, Joshua Hobbs's list 1790 Stovall, Raph 1 tithe, Joshua Hobb's list 1790 (Raph is probably Raphael which also translated to Ralph). Nelson Co, Mgs: Stovall, Herekiah to Polly Owens; surety Dolphus Bukey, d/o William Owen, mApr 12, 1795 by Benjamin Ogden. (only male Stovall mg in Nelson Co). IF there was a Stovall who m 1783--would have been Jefferson Co, not Nelson (formed winter 1784-records start Jan 1785). Stovall males-Hardin Co Mgs to 1850: George to Sarah Hibbs bond 24 Sep 1809 Hezekiah to Seney Glasscoc 24 May 1821 by S. Brown Hezekiah O. - Massa McCullum 27 Jul 1826 C. Since you live in Louisville (how I envy you!!!)- you can go to the Public Lib OR the Filson Club & pull the Hardin Co Wills; the Hardin Co Mgs (and confirm the data above & glean the women's mgs). Also, either Lib would have the Censuses & Tax Lists of Hardin Co 1793-1836; Hardin Co Censuses 1840, 1850, 1860,1870 & probably 1880 (all have been published in book form). You might also check the Jefferson Co Mgs for Stovall. You might be surprised at what you might find!!! 3. Hi, I've been having the same problem.

    2. On thinking a little more about your marriage problem, I am a little puzzled that you would have great-great grandparents married at such an early date. I am 75. At least one set of my great-great grandparents were married in 1825. Others were married even later. Why don't you check the date of the children of this marriage and see if you don't have the date wrong. Bob Moore

    2. Dear Sherrie (assume that is your name, although you did not sign), Either the date is wrong or the county is wrong. Nelson Co. did not exist until 1785, when it was formed out of Jefferson. I looked in the records of Nelson Co. marriages for 1785 to 1800, and there is no such marriage. There are very few marriages recorded in Jefferson Co. from 1780 (year of its formation) through 1785, and none of them is for the couple you are interested in. Bob Moore, Lexington

    3. Ralph and Sarah were gr-gr-gr-grandparents per Rollo Stovall's book. Their son, Hezekiah L. Stovall had a son, Hezekiah H. Stovall and Hezekiah H. Stovall was father of my grandfather, James Ernest Stovall. I have searched Hardin County records but haven't found them there. [email protected] wrote: Sherrie Kahle Childers 8408 Fox Ridge Ct. 3. I am looking for information on Sarah Mason who married Ralph Stovall July 6, 1783 in Nelson County, Kentucky. Sarah and Ralph were my gr-gr-grandparents on my mother's side. Ralph was from Hardin County.

    2. The exact name is Nelson County Genealogical Roundtable. Their address is PO Box 409, Bardstown, KY 40004. They operate out of the Nelson Co. library in Bardstown. Bob Moore, Lexington
