We always have a drawing for a homemade quilt (any homemade item by an elder member would be good). We have a gift for the oldest and the youngest. Come up with puzzeling facts about different family members - who shows horses, who cross-stitches, who likes to surf the internet for old tractors, who's birthday is ***, etc. - then whomever answers the most questions correctly gets a prize. The same could be done with baby pictures. I've printed out a family tree and posted it for all to see. Water balloon tosses for children (adults who want to do so too). Pinatas are a hit with the kids. Egg in spoon races. That's all I can think of now. They do have a genealogical society and I'm supposed to be notified of the next time they meet. I went to a presentation last Thursday that they had at Wickland in Bardstown. I have also forwarded this message to one of the members so that she can let us know. Yes, the Nelson Co. Genealogical Roundtable - which published my book. They are at PO Box 409, Bardstown, Ky. They have a great web site, which I'll give to you later when I look it up. I don't have the URL on the tip of my tongue. I'm not sure about whether there are regular meetings or not. I do know that there's going to be a meeting on May 3 at the library in Bardstown, but it may just be the ones who do the transcribing of court records. Let me check into that. Their e-mail address is [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) . I'll get back to you. Bob

Thanks, Eileen, for your reply regarding the Nelson Co. Genealogical Roundtable. It's really a shame that so many researchers who could use its materials don't even know that it exists. I'm afraid I have to tell you, though, that there are plenty of people right in Nelson Co. who have no idea of the wonderful work that this group has been doing for over 20 years. We would be nowhere near where we are if it had not been for them and the many research materials that they have produced. Bob Moore

Is Cissell also Cecil??? Often but not always. But there is a story about how one branch petitioned the courts in KY to allow them to change the way their name was spelled to avoid the connection.
Hello Nelson Co. KY contributors: First I want to thank Bob Moore for the enlightment re: Roundtable. I was unaware of this organization and its resources. Secondly, I want to thank Roundtable and all of its contributors for all the work they produce (even if I have my head in the sand & didn't know it was available)! You are so right, Bob. We need to give and take! I couldn't agree more. I hope Roundtable is inundated with artcles! :) It's been so long since I've done any Nelson Co., KY research - but I like to know what is going on so I keep watching the messages in case a familiar surname pops up. Have thoroughly enjoyed the postings as of late - they have been quite interesting and informative. Great questions - in depth answers. Thanks much to all. It's been a pleasure reading them. Nelson Co Listers....Just sent msge without a "subject". My mistake, sorry. It was about Pottingers of Nelson Co & fact that one of my family tree members, Lytleton West Talbott, of Bardstown, had first married into that family around Civil War times; don't think that mge lasted too long, for later he married for second time to an Eleanor _______ of Ky, b there Jan 1831. If any reader may know something of the Pottinger folks, check out my prior msge "without a subject" line. Again my apologies as I know how busy readers are. Charlie Murphy near Seattle.
Nelson Co Listers: Recently I saw a hint that one of my grandmother's g uncles, named Lytleton W Talbott of Bardstown ? 1820-1890?, had married a Pottinger in Nelson Co. I've lost that material however & wonder if their mge might show up in any early Nelson Co mge records (my guess is perhaps between 1858-1866 or so). I later learned he served with Nathan Bedford Forrest's Rangers, but was taken prisoner at Ft Donnelson, TN by the North & shipped to POW camp on Lake Erie, Ohio called Ft Johnson near Sandusky. Not certain how long he spent there, perhaps the duration of the Civil War; later found him as an attorney married to an Eleanor ________ b KY Jan 1831. They had moved to southern California near San Bernadino. Might any lister know further details about the Pottinger family of Nelson County? My research suggests they were a well known pioneer family in the area. I'm curious whether Lyttleton & his first wife, ________ Pottinger, may have had children. Apparently no children came from his second mge to Eleanor _______. TIA for any tips for further research on my part. Charlie Murphy near Seattle.
"John Figg Sr & Elizabeth to Samuel Porter, on waters on Rolling Fork and Salt River, a part of 297 acres, being 25 acres." Know that Samuel Porter m Mary Figg in Nelson Co, Ky; have ch: James, John, Deborah (Debby) m Martin Thomas Nelson Co; Emily & Elizabeth Porter. Mary b ca 1782 Berkeley Co, Va. 1810 Cen Nelson Co lists Samuel Porter 1820 Cen lists Mary Porter 1830 Cen lists Mary Porter no listing 1840, 1850, 1860 in Nelson Co. (so says authors of "Figg Leaves". Mary Porter along with her sons John, James, Martin Thomas (wife Deborah Porter) sells the land to LEO WIMSATT in 1830-- 25 acres & bounded by land of Roberts Hulls. (Leo Wimsatt from the SMC, MD Wimsatts & connected to the Nicholas Mills Jr genealogy). Now, I have to ask WHERE did John Figg Sr get the 275 acres??? The authors of "Figg Leaves" does not say. But in 1814 John sold land to Joseph Essex (Jr, m Milly Figg-my 3rd GGpts) and in 1820 he sold 20 acres to Samuel MILLER and Betsey for 1.00. Both deeds recorded in Deed Book 9, Nelson Co, Ky. Could the 297 acres have been military warrent land??? John Sr would have been old enough to have served in the Rev War & perhaps got land as a result???????? Can anyone help????? Sure would appreciate any data at all !!!! Mary Y.
