    1. RE: [KYNELSON-L] A Death in our Nelson County Family
    2. Ginny
    3. Dear Dee and all on the list, Dee--Thank you so much for letting us know about Bob. It is a great loss for all who have Nelson County family/ancestors and those of us who also knew Bob as a friend even though we are far away. I got my first e-mail from Bob on 8/30/2000 when he answered a query I had on Genforum about my HOBBS gggrandfather. Bob was a very distant HOBBS cousin of mine and he gave me all kinds of leads on my ancestors--and not just HOBBS--when I sent him some of my tree. I have corresponded with him on and off since then as many of you have. He told me about his illness at the end of March and the prognosis sounded optimistic although it was a serious illness. We hadn't written since then as I was dealing with a family illness and he sounded like things were going well. We always wrote to each other during the NCAA Basketball Tournament in March because he was a devoted Kentucky fan having been the team manager on the Adolph Rupp coached team that won the national championship in the early '50's. I am a devoted Duke fan and he wrote to me anyway! Just shows you what kind of person he was! What an irreplaceable loss for us all. Ginny Durham, NC

    3. Dear Friends, I am very sad to inform all of you that Bob Moore died today. Most of you knew him as a nice man on the other end of an e-mail, always willing to help when he could. The man that wrote a great book on Northeastern Nelson County (Bloomfield, Fairfield & Chaplin) which he donated to the Nelson County Genealogical Roundtable. So many of you purchased the book and found it to be such a big help in your research. We, at NCGR knew him as a man who cared so much for us and contributed so much of his time and effort to our cause. He donated two books, he wrote many articles for our quarterly, the Genealogist. He kept us in line by insisting upon consistency and accuracy. He was working with us up until a few days ago, proof-reading our next Deed Book, and making a list of the Virginia books he wanted us to purchase for our new genealogy library, even though he was very ill. I got an e-mail from Bob a few days ago that simply read "I've got a lot of pain right now." Another one followed almost immediately,"I'm still bothering you and will continue to do so!" Bob The nice man known to his friends as "Bobby" was actually Dr. Robert P. Moore, who worked at the Pentagon translating sensitive material from the Russian Military and so much more. His work for our country will always be remembered. Please put his wife Pat on your prayer list. We will never forget "Bobby" DeAnna Nichols Fisher, President Nelson County Genealogical Roundtable

    3. DeAnna, Pat will be in my prayers. this is just so sad. can you email me privately with details. were it not for " Bob " I would not have all the info I have on my Duncan line. I can't tell you how much I appreciated his guidance in learning genealogy. I feel like I have lost a close friend though I did not have a chance to meet him in person. emailing back and forth is the way we talked. he was a kind, generous man who helped so many of us. 1. George Howard and Mary Ann Burch
    2. Jerry L. Clark
    3. Dear List, Has anyone found the marriage record of George Howard to Mary Ann Burch? I think it was abt 1818 in Nelson County, KY. Also I know people have claimed that this George Howard went to Daviess County, KY and that he had sons Sylvester and Gregory Howard. But since I have not seen the proof that proves these are sons of George Howard who married Mary Ann Burch, I'm wondering if we have the correct George Howard. Has anyone followed this George Howard to provide us with more concrete proof of his children, or associates? Can Someone locate their Marriage record it may list his or her parents.

    1. re: George Howard
    2. Guess I am going to have to take a look at the actual mg record the next time I am in Ky. Pg 58, Nelson Co Mgs 1785-1800, Nelson Co Genealogists: George Howard & Polly Merrifield, bond 14 Nov 1798; m 15 Nov 1798. surety Thomas Sweets Polly, d/o Thomas Merrifield m by James Chambers, from Min Ret. Do not know IF Thomas gave consent for Polly to marry George; but says she is d/o Thomas. ASSUMING that George is at least 21 at mg--b 1777; Polly would be about the same age--Because--as I have stated before-- Thomas was born ca 1745 Frederick Co, Va; is named on a 1765 land record in Frederick Co, Va; is listed on the 1775 payroll list of Ft Pitt & is mentioned in the Clark Papers--IL Expedition 1781-1784. Now--Thomas Merrifield (JR?) m Nelly Matthew 23 Feb 1795 Nelson Co--she d/o Paul Matthews (also listed in index of Clark Papers--b ca 1740-50). Thomas Sr Merrifield m Mrs Jenny Hoofnagle, widow 20 Jun 1796 (believe she MAY be the widow of Peter Hoofnagle). Then a Thomas Merrifield m Rachel Kennedy who is unhappy with him & leaves him (may be the Rachel Merrifield 1810 Washington Co, KY). Samuel Merryfield/Merrifield/Marifield Jr; Thomas Merryfield/Marifield/Minnifield; Richard Marifield/Merryfield/Merrifield; John Merryfield/Merrifield and Alexander Merryfield/Merrifield all named in the 4 Apr 1765 land record of Frederick Co, Va. I believe that Alexander (b 4 Apr 1765, m Rachael Boone 1787 Jefferson Co, Ky, buried at Bloomfield, Nelson, Ky) is the s/o Thomas--not the son of Samuel Merrifield SR (the accepted genealogy of the Merrifield Family). It is highly unlikely that Samuel Sr & wife Mary M. (not Elizabeth) had a son born the same day as the land record in Frederick Co--gives land to Samuel Jr, lists household items & names sons (above) & daus. Mary, Rachel, Dinah & Elizabeth. Davis Merrifield is in Daviess Co, Ky, also-- he is s/o John & Priscilla Davis Merrifield (m 1788 Nelson Co). John & Priscilla Davis Merrifield were members of the Shaker Community at South Union, Ky. Priscilla d 1826 & is buried in the Shaker Cem. Modern day Merrifield researchers says that John & Priscilla was divorced because of the celibacy requirement of the Shakers but doesn't offer any proof/record of their position. Know that John Merrifield JR (wife Sarah Welsh-m 1816 Hardin Co) sold land to Alexander Merrifield 1819 Hardin Co. To be John Jr --he is s/o John & Priscilla Davis Merrifield, not the s/o Alexander & Rachel Boone Merrifield. Researchers says that Samuel Sr b ca 1717-1720 & wife Mary (M. not Elizabeth--born about the same time). Since Samuel transported 1738-ish alone--married in Va to Mary M. ???? Making childen start being born 174?--with Samuel Jr being the eldest. But we know that those that were transported --served at least 7 years-- I doubt if Samuel Sr would have married much before 1745 (which falls into line with approx. births of children). George Howard is 1810 Hardin Co, pg 49: 20010 - 40111-00--has to be the Hodgenville area because same page of census has: Samuel LaRue, Alexander McDougal (from NC, served in the Rev War & was a minister, died at Hodgenville at 100+), Abraham Enlow, etc. There isn't a George Howard in Hardin Co 1820-- The index of "Early Hardin Co Census & Tax Lists 1793 - 1836" gives: George Howard pg 49: 1810 Cen George H. Howard: p 25: Sep 21, 1805 Southwardly Dist, Book 2 tax list George H./H. George Howard: p 101: 1825 tax list George W. Went through entire 1850 Cen Index of the US re: George Howard; at the end of the listing of George--started listing other Howards--extracted the oldest 1st listed since I requested George Howard b ca 1777 MD, d Ky. You can compare the earlier censuses to the 1850 cen listings of the other Howards of Meade (George of Meade b ca 1795 KY). George of Daviess Co b ca 1810 MD (Ann-1850 Daviess b 1774 MD--would not have come to Ky until after 1810-George 1830 Daviess Co also b ca 1774 & husband of Ann of the 1850 Cen). Etc, etc. As you will notice: 1810 Cen Hardin Co: there is a female 45+ in the hh of George (to 45) & wife (to 45). IF this is George & Polly (Mary) Merrifield Howard-- who is the older female-- is she a Howard or Merrifield???? By 1820--This George is in Grayson Co. UNLESS: I can go through the 1810, 1820 Censuses of Nelson page by page. None listed in the census index & no transcription has been done of the 1810, 1820, 1830 of Nelson. (I am currently working on transcribing the 1810 Cen of Nelson; have done the 1820 Bullitt Co & is on line at the website- also the 1830 (I think) & the 1870 Cen of Bullitt--all on the website). Need to do more checking of 1820 Grayson Co to see who the other Howards are that was there too. I THINK Grayson Co is where there was a Shaker Community but have to check it out. I THINK Grayson Co is Bowling Green & the Shaker Community was near Bowling Green. Am not too familiar with that part of Ky tho Grayson Co borders on Tn & I THINK Williamson Co, Tn. (Williamson Co, Tn is where Alexander, John & Thomas MARYFIELD was in 1806, listed in the tax record & Thomas MARYFIELD m Maria Lashorn 1806- mg record- lose this Thomas until he shows up in 1820 Cen & 1825 tax list Hardin Co, died 1826 Hardin Co with Marie Merrifield filing to be exectx with John Rogers as her surety- have found a Lashorn male in Va but was from PA- I think the area of Pa (Washington Co) that flipped back and forth between VA, Pa in a matter of months-next to Monongalia Co, Va- but then the original Co of Monongalia Co is parent to 13 Counties & 3 of them being in PA).

She has never seen the picture before and was asking me multiple questions. You wrote in a previous email that the picture was of a Troutman gathering at the Bellwood Mansion. Do you know any of the others in the picture? Do you remember where you originally got the copy of the picture? Thank you very much again. I will email you more later. Rhonda

Oct 6, 1813- Battle of the Thames-- Tecumseh was killed. The Prophet founded a village near Kansas City, KS in 1826 & died there 1836.(He being born 1775). 2. My Bayles family history includes conversations with Tecumseh and Bayles men (brothers or uncle?) the night before the battle resulting in his death. My ggggrandfather David Bayles (1795-1844) was a soldier at Battle of Fallen Timbers. I will look at records to get more. 1. Re: [KYNELSON-L] re: Ice's Ferry; Monongahela Co, VA-1767
    2. Ice's Ferry is very prominent in my family history as they married in to the Bayles family--Ice (I think it was Andrew) married one of the daughters of Jesse Bayles. I am in process of reentering data and will follow up. Thanks, Chuck Woods -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Thu, 05 May 2005 05:06:47 -0500 Subject: [KYNELSON-L] re: Ice's Ferry; Monongahela Co, VA-1767 My notes in ( ) on ZACKQUILL MORGAN. Do not know parents of Zackquill. He MAY very well be a descendant of Morgan Morgan of Exeter Twp, Berks Co, PA. per: www.dorseykiger.com/history/town.html Morgantown, WVa--history: Mentions: Fort Morgan- 1772 Fort Coburn 1770 Fort Dinwiddies - 1772 Fort Burris Fort Kerns in Greenmount area of Morgantown; as did other small forts thorughout the region. Mononalia Co, Va- Oct 11, 1776; 13 counties fromed from it including 3 Pa counties. ZAQUILL MORGAN- 1st settled in the area in 1772 & in 1785 received a charter from the Va Assembly for the establishmane of a town called MORGANTOWN-- present town is a direct result of that Va Charter. (Zaquill Morgan was Capt; served in Lord Dunsmore's War; discharged at Ft Pitt- listed on payroll list of 1775 Ft Pitt along with men who served under him-- 3 being Samuel, Richard & Thomas MARIFIELD--have an alpha list of 1775 Ft Pitt--listed also is John, William & Andrew ICE--all privates. Tree on rootsweb.com gives Zaquill Morgan b 1742 so he may well be the age of FREDERICK ICE or would Frederick Ice be older since 3 of his sons served with Zaquill?????). Forks of Cheat Bapt Ch- north of Stewartstown in 1775. Still used today- 1st church established west of the mountains of Va. Further towards the Cheat River - a settlement grew up and around a ferry established and operated by FREDERICK ICE in 1767. That same year-- Frederick's son ADAM was the first white child born in the Monongahela Valley. ICE'S FERRY was the first authorized ferry in western VA. George Washington crossed there in 1784. Persent bridge on Cheat Lake on WVA 73 marks the location of ICE'S FERRY. Maybe the History of Monongahela Co, Va will give more clues??? Or perhaps Frederick Co since Monongahela Co was formed from it. Mary Y.

    1. Re: [KYNELSON-L] re: Ice's Ferry; Monongahela Co, VA-1767
    2. You might also check out the Ice surname board on genforum.com--many ICEs there. Also see Bayles name as Baily/Bayless. www.bribling.net/nc.html (maybe that will work- couldn't get the other one to work) has data on John Bayles (Baily/Bayless) 1664; purchases land from the indians (natives of Staten Island). Men on document: John Baily (Bayles), Daniel Dentony & Luke Watson. Gov. of NJ repurchased the land from John Bayles who never setteld in NY. Have seen a listing of "Captives Released by Col. Bouquet- 1765" Ice, Catherine, Christian, Elizabeth, Eve, John, Lewis , Thomas & William. Listing is alpha. Question as to wheither Mary Ice or Mary Bayles was mother of Tecumseh. Arguement being that Mary Bayles would have been too young to have been his mother. Not going to get into that tho- because I don't know one way or the other!!!! I am not a direct descendant of any Ice but have cousins who are. The Ky Ice married into the Dawsons (my line); Joseph Frederick Ice m Prudence Essex, sis of my GGm. Near relation but not direct.
