I am seeking any information on a John CARTER, mentioned in Volume 4, page 148, and Volume 5 page 357, in "Littell's Laws of Kentucky". This supposedly has to do with a Murder of a James Miller, committed by John CARTER....Any help would be greatly appreciated... Would like a faxed copy, or a synopsis of the information. Thanks, Dick Carter [email protected] Dick Carter [email protected]
Mary -- Supposedly all these outlaws were cousins, but just try and find the connection. Jesse James was in KY but the family came much later than the Purcells. If there is family tie there it is not an obvious one.--Judi I think Jesse James was late 1890's. > Mary -- Supposedly all these outlaws were cousins, but > just try and find the connection. I have a bit of info on the Younger lineage sent to me years ago because of the marriage of Joshua Younger who married Elizabeth Virginia Lee. Lee being the line I was searching. To pick up a bit on the Purcell line, this article has Charles Lee Younger b Dec 28. 1779 died Nov 12 1854 married Sarah S. Purcell b 1788. Her will probated Dec 11 1859. Charles Lee Younger was first married to Nancy Toney 1798 and had a child Milton. May have had Thomas Coleman and Elizabeth by Nancy Toney also. Children by Sarah S. Purcell were; Henry Washington, Virginia Lee, Lucy Sullivan, Littleton Purcell, Sidney Ann. Adaline. (Proven by D.A.R.) Ancestry.com has parents of Sarah Sullivan Purcell as #1 Joseph Piersall and Elizabeth Hicks. #2 Sarah a daughter of Thomas Purcell and Elizabeth Sullivan. Sarah S. Purcell born June 10, 1782 Crab Orchard, Lincoln Co. Ky. died Jan 11 1859 Clay Co Mo. Dorothy
It seems that I have become the bearer of bad news on a regular basis, I am sorry for that. Many of you knew Pat Craven when she worked at the courthouse annex in the old records room in Bardstown until she retired a few years ago.. She may have helped you locate records when you visited to do research or she may have made copies and mailed them to you when you were unable to come here. Pat may have even done your family genealogy for you. She was a wealth of information on virtually every family in Nelson County, able to tell you something about your family, sometimes a little, sometimes a lot. It was Pat who organized the old records and kept them safe so they are still available for us now. Oh yes, I know that she was sometimes a little TOO protective and ruffled more than a few feathers by keeping things locked and not letting you copy certain things, her intentions were good though. She was intent on not letting things "walk out" of that basement and be lost forever. She may have been a little possessive about her beloved old records but we have her to thank for those records being orderly and easy to find. Pat may not have been the easiest person to get along with, when you walked into the annex you just never knew whether she would like you or hate you at first sight. I was one of those people that she hated at first sight and she made it very difficult for me to do my research. I never knew why. It seemed such a shame to me as I thought we had interests in common and I was going to be moving to Bardstown soon and I had hoped that we could be friends. It was not to be. I am reminded of the story I heard few years ago, Pat's daughter, who had not seen her in years, inquired as to whether her mother was still alive. She said that she did not wish to have any contact with her mother, she just wanted to know if she was alive and well. I felt sorry for both of them, they were missing out on the closest bond of all, a mother-daughter bond. I spend much of my time these days at the courthouse transcribing records for our books and quarterly magazines, filling requests from our members for copies of marriage bonds, wills, deeds etc. and I think how lucky we are to have had a woman like Pat who helped make it all possible. No matter what my experiences were, I have always had the utmost respect and admiration for her dedication to preserving our history. Now Pat Craven is lying in a hospital in Louisville, with days or weeks to live. If you have remembrances or kind wishes to share, we would like to let Pat know that there are people out there who care and appreciate what she has done for them. Please e-mail whatever you would like to share and I will see that she gets them. I am sure that it would mean a lot to her in her final days. I would not be so quick to dismiss her. In that time period, Kentucky is still Virginia, and Kentucky is a county of Virginia. Nelson and Bullitt counties didn't even exist. The only permanent settlements were the forts and stations. Everyone in the entire area was on the move. Crab Orchard itself was a way station for migrants from the Old Dominion. Out of the thousands who passed through there, only a handful of families stayed there. If it were not for the family archives, who would have though to look for Sara Purcell's 1807 marriage in Indiana. It didn't become a state until 1816. My suggestions is to track the Purcell in-law families for their records and migration routes. When written records are exhausted, it's best to keep exploring the tangents. By the way, there is a Lard family related to the Woodson family, who are kin to the James. Relationship are not always found in linear forms. -----Original Message----- From: Judith Purcell [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, June 03, 2005 3:43 PM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: [KYNELSON-L] PURCELLS, Dennis, Thomas and James Sr. (brothers) Eric-- If Sarah Sullivan was born in Lincoln County, Ky (if I am reading correctly) then it is doubtful she would be a daughter of Thomas Purcell and wife Elenor Sullivan located in Nelson/Bullitt County, KY in 1780. Thomas Purcell had 400 acres of land there surveyed by Daniel Sullivan (bro. to Elenor). Sorry I was not able to find more through my research in trying to find the Purcell connection. I did not find anything in Clark County, Indiana regarding Purcells except for this marriage. But anyone should feel free to check as certainly a more in-depth research might turn up something. I have tried to contact anyone who states as a fact that she was daughter of Thomas and Elenor (Sullivan) Purcell but so far no answers. Maybe your query will bring something to light. I think I will stop including her as a possible daughter in light of the Lincoln County, Kentucky information. Thomas Purcell did have a daugther name Catherine Sullivan Purcell who married Hezekiah Lard in Nelson County, KY and later a James in St. Louis, MO. Sorry I don't have the James information with me, but will say there appeared to be no connection to Jesse James. As long as you've stumbled across the Purcell-Younger connection, here's some information, followed by a query. Col. Charles Lee Younger, b. Dec 28 1799 Nicholas Co KY, d. Nov 12, 1854, Osceola, St. Clair MO is the grandfather of the Younger brothers associated with Jesse & Frank James through Col. Younger's son, Col. Henry Washington Younger. The elder Col. Younger married Sarah Sullivan Purcell, B. 1782 Crab Orchard, Lincoln Co KY, d. Jan 11, 1859 in Clay Co Mo. The marriage occurred on Aug 21, 1807 in Little York, Clark Co IN and was performed by Rev. James Lemon. They had six children, among whom was Col. Coleman Purcell Younger, b. Apr 18, 1809 St Charles, MO and d. Apr 11, 1890 in San Jose, Santa Clara Co CA. Coleman Purcell Younger was an alcalde in California under Mexican rule. He had been a member of the Missouri State legislature, and in California became President of the California Society of Pioneers. He also was associated with Jesse & Frank James' uncle Drury Woodson James, also a cattleman, who founded Paso Robles, CA. It was a mystery where his Purcell name came from until the marriage of his father to Sarah Sullivan Purcell was discovered in the Hihn-Younger archives at Santa Cruz College in California a couple in 2002. The question now remains, what is the ancestry of Sarah Sullivan Purcell? Nothing more is known of her, other than what I've stated. Does anyone know? Not really intersted in the Younger Family--just picked up information along the way because of the Belle Starr connection to my ex-in-law's family. Just know that Grandma Minnie & her #2 husband Rolly Bollin were "colorful" characters!!! You might also be interested to know that Cole Younger & the Dulins were cousins. The Dulins's mother was a Younger & sister to Henry. Always found that interesting but not surprising. Don't know--but it wouldn't surprise me if Jesse James was also connected. The Youngers, the Dulins & the James all form the same area of Ky-just before they all went to Mo. Jesse's step-father was P.B. Samuels, don't know now who his father was. Eric-- If Sarah Sullivan was born in Lincoln County, Ky (if I am reading correctly) then it is doubtful she would be a daughter of Thomas Purcell and wife Elenor Sullivan located in Nelson/Bullitt County, KY in 1780. Mary -- Supposedly all these outlaws were cousins, but just try and find the connection. Jesse James was in KY but the family came much later than the Purcells. If there is family tie there it is not an obvious one.--Judi --- [email protected] wrote: > Not really intersted in the Younger Family--just > picked up information > along the way because of the Belle Starr connection > to my ex-in-law's > family. Mary -- I think you are pretty close on your time line except I would say Daniel Purcell b. 1720 to 1730 as he got land in Hampshire County about 1750. Had not seen Rev. War Service for him. Thanks!! Also, the brothers Dennis, Thomas and James Sr. Purcell did serve under George Rogers Clark out of Kentucky. This was in the Indian Expeditions to Indiana 1780 (all three), and later (1781 - 1783) for a couple of them. This service is considered Revolutionary and was accepted for Thomas Purcell by DAR. The reason is that Indians were incited and encourged by the English to take American scalps and they were attacking the Kentucky frontier to such an extent something had to be done. This was when Kentucky was included in VA and records are there. Lots of good history available. Later service can be found elsewhere, but no Purcells after that. I think you are right with time range for the sons of Daniel. It is good to put a range rather than an approximate date as there was another Thomas Purcell b about 1750 and I don't want people to confuse the two. They were the only Purcell family we found in Frederick County (Allegany), Maryland at the time. I have some family information on the Youngers but didn't research that myself. Yes, take it with a grain of salt. It is speculation at this point. I found Family Forums under genforum.genealogy.com/ for both Purcell and Younger. Under Purcell Family Forum someone has Sarah Purcell b. 1788 KY and d. before 11 Jan 1859 Clay County, MO. for the Sarah that married Charles Younger. Suppose she was in the 1850 census? I will not add more here as that would be duplicating something that would easy to get from that source. -- Judi --- [email protected] wrote: > Correction!!! > > Should have said Charles' son Henry b 1810-- son > Cole was born 1844 (d 1916 > of a heart attack--d in MO). > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Sent: Friday, June 03, 2005 7:46 AM > Subject: Re: [KYNELSON-L] PURCELLS, Dennis, Thomas > and James Sr. (brothers) > > > > Trees on rootsweb.com gives Charles Younger with > at least 4 wives-- > > one of them being Sarah Purcell. If you are interested in the Younger Family I have a bit on them. Cole was not the first "Bad Boy" in that family. "Younger, Thomas, planter on 10 Nov. 1769 committed fornication with Mary Dunkan and begot a base born child. He was fined 30s. and ordered to give security to keep the county from any charge by means of his bastard child called Alexander." If you tell me I can send stuff direct as it is a bit large for list. Trees on rootsweb.com gives Charles Younger with at least 4 wives-- one of them being Sarah Purcell. Another wife was a Hatfield "of the feuding Hatfields of W Va & Ky" (which was much later!!!) Check them out & take with a grain of salt until you prove the data!!! We are tossing out all these names & very few dates.
