Hello List, Thanks to Patricia Morano and others who caught my mistake. Earlier today I wrote that we visited Lincolns homeplace in Lincoln City, IN and I said that Nancy Hanks Lincoln, Abraham Lincolns first wife, is buried there in a cemetery I meant to say that his mother Nancy Hanks Lincoln was buried there, not his first wife. Thanks for catching my error..........I was thinking one thing, and wrote another. Hi Mary, I did check out his site! Very awesome! http://www.ericjames.org/ I see many of my family names there - so I will be spending some time perusing through these.... It looks like he has his earliest James in southern VA 1725 ish. These guys could have also been Scotch-Irish (rough and tumble type people... I think many of mine were these). Quakers, Germans, Scotch-Irish all migrated down the Shenandoah Valley corridor trying to find land, get away from religious persecution, etc. Many then fanned out into Kentucky or NC then into KY or Tenn., etc. Now, if I can get as half as knowledgeable as many on these Kentucky lists, I would be happy! Re discussion of the Lincolns We visited Lincoln City, IN where there is a replica of Lincolns home after they moved from KY. If I remember right, Nancy Hanks Lincoln, Abraham Lincolns first wife, is buried there in a cemetery. If anyong lives close, there is a nice Visitors building with lots of nice pictures, movie, and then a short stroll to the cemetery and the setting with the replica of the Lincoln home and buildings. It is not elaborate but a nice day trip. He is buried in a country churchyard cem just south of Charleston, Coles, IL. Do not know where Sarah Bush Johnson Lincoln is buried; don't know if she is with him or not. Found his tombstone a number of years ago. Thomas & Nancy may have married in Washington Co, Ky but they lived in the Hodgenville area of Hardin Co until they moved to IN (where Nancy died). Thomas returned to Hardin Co & married Sarah Bush Johnson, d/o Christopher Bush (ca 1819-ish). There were other Hanks in Hardin Co, too, who moved into Grayson & Breckenridge Cos. Sarah Lee Hanks, Nancy's mother, married Henry Sparrow in Mercer Co, Ky. A Sparrow also married in to one of a Jenkins Family I am researching in the Nelson/Hardin Cos area of Ky. JUDE --Thanks for your help, I do appreciate it. Isaac Purcell is my ancestor and John was his brother. They are the only Purcell family that stayed there, as far as I can tell. But still we are a long way from being able to put them together and you never know what may have missed. I have been surprised before. I just looked at index (all I have) and it shows Vol 4 pg 148 John Carter charged with murder of James Miller, Vol 5 pg 357 John Carter deceased; commissioners authorized to sell lands. under Miller, James Vol 4, 148, John Carter charged with his murder, escaped jail and was apprehended. I suppose you could get the actual volumes on a library loan.I do not think they are on line. Let me see what I can find, Judi. Due to the spelling--it is going to be quite a task to find anything. Will specifically look in Lincoln Co but be aware that ancestry doesn't have any census of Ky until 1810. Don't know what I will find in the mgs to 1850 (actually 1825-ish). Thomas Lincoln m Nancy Hanks 1806 Washington Co, Ky. When researching families in the Nelson/Hardin Co area of Ky--one picks up all kinds of data!!!! Does anyone have Volume 5 of Littells Laws for Kentucky... Need information in Volume 5, page 357, referring to John CARTER... Seems John Carter was arrested for Murder, escaped, and was recaptured.... Did they hang him, turn him loose, or pat him on the back, and say good boy...Thanks. Dick Carter [email protected]

Eric, Am so pleased to find your website & it is wonderful!!! Have marked it as a favorite so I can explore it more. Was looking for Forrest James only to find out he was Rev John Foster James who m Margaret Elizabeth "Betsy" Wand. She d/o Thomas Sr and MARY FIGG Wand. Mary b 5 Apr 1764. Thomas 2 Apr 1762 England; d 7 Nov 1837 Warren Co, Ky. For this couple, I have the children: 1 Thomas Wand Jr ca 1795 2. Margaret Elizabeth Wand; m Forrest James; she b 6 Aug 1796 ; m 17 Jan 1811 Butler Co, Ky 3. Powell Wand m Mary Kuykendall- he b 23 Oct 1797 4. Nancy Ann Wand b ca 1800 Fred Co, Va; d Crawford Co, Ark; m Moses Kuykendall 14 Dec 1807 Butler Co, Ky--he 1785-1828 Crawford Co, Ark 5. Mary Wand b ca 1801 6. Wm N. Wand b ca 1803; m Nancy Davis Hay 16 Feb 1824 (am sure if I checked the mgs of Ky-I would find actual mg places and could find census data for the above people, too. Much rebuilding of my gedcom files!!!!) Also: Seeli/Seli/Celi Figg b 4 May 1776 Berkely Co, Va; m Mary Dean Kuykendall (widow of Jacob; had children by him) 8 Oct 1804 Hardin Co, Ky. Seeli/etc, s/o John Figg Sr & #1 wife (an unknown Irish Lady); Seeli/etc d 1855 Ellettsville, Monroe, IN. Mary prob. died in Shelby Co, Ky. I descend from John Figg Sr & #2 wife Elizabeth Mitchell who m 1792 Berkeley Co, Va; John d Dec 1839-Jan 1840 Nelson Co, Ky. Have been trying to find other Figgs in Va & I thank you for your "lead"!!! I have the book "Figg Leaves" by Haskarrl & Matson, 1982. Also-- when I was a young girl at LeRoy, McLean Co, IL. I knew Woody James & his wife Maggie (they lived a block away from us & later their dau & son-in-law built a house across the street from them; that is how they all got to IL--their dau married a man from LeRoy). Woody & Maggie was from Ky. I checked the 1930 Cen of LeRoy, McLean Co, IL & found Woody's mother Lavinia living with them. Will have to check the Cems (Oak Grove & Gilmore) to see which Cem all three are buried in. Was just a kid when Maggie & Woody died & would not have remembered Lavinia. Brenda of [email protected] found Woodford James in a household in Ky with his mother & step-father. Just don't remember WHERE!!!! Data was in my gedfile but have had to up-load an OLD back up & have lost lots of data including data on Woody & Maggie. I had asked Brenda if she could find a Woody James with a mother Lavinia anywhere in Ky. She did & I then found them myself. Will have to see if I can repeat the data!!! Mary -- the 1810 is fine since Sarah Purcell married in 1807. Since she remembered Crab Orchard it just sounds like she lived there. I wonder why she did not mention her parents names. Oh well. Thank you. I am not in any hurry and again don't go to too much trouble with this. Judi --- [email protected] wrote: > Let me see what I can find, Judi. Mary--Thanks for the good information on the Youngers. Nothng like the raw information to get a better overview of where they were. Did you find any Purcells in Lincoln County? Suppose you did not or you would have included them. Sarah Purcell being born in Crab Orchard - Lincoln County, KY makes me think there had to have been Purcells there though I do not recall any. Don't go to too much trouble. I am wondering abot the 1810 census. See you are on line now. When I was researching my Hanks line in Muskingum and Coshocton County, Ohio, a James family member told me that their James family was related to the James Brothers. Who knows if this is true? These former Quaker families (James, Hanks, and others) came from Loudoun County, Virginia to Ohio in about 1815. Some of these Quakers came down from eastern Pennsylvania in 1750-60s (Jackson, Janney, etc)and others (like the Hanks) came from Virginia to Maryland and converted to Quakerism there. The Quakers did not last long in Virginia due to religious issues, so they scattered other places. Some families went west to Ohio and changed religions, some remained Quakers and went to the Bedford Co., Pennsylvania area and others (like my Jackson line) disappeared other places - probably Kentucky or further south, following the typical migration route (along I-81) into southern Virginia, North Carolina, etc. James only married into my Hanks, so I don't have much on them. Earliest I have is a James James (b. abt 1775) who married Sarah Hanks about 1800? The original James might have been Quakers in Pennsylvania. Just a thought!
