Dear Fay, Thanks for your interest in the records. I'm going to send them to several people at one time in a separate e-mail, so you'll get them that way. For now, I just had to write to say "Wow!" That's what I said to myself when I saw that you are researching Crittenden County and now live there. I spent almost an hour looking through Crittenden County Court Clerk orders today, looking for anything related to my ancestors James A. Cardwell and his wife Eleanor Alice Fitzsimmons Cardwell. They married in Union County in 1855 and still lived there in the 1860 census. By the time of the 1870 census, they lived in the Bells Mines Precinct of Crittenden County with five children. James A. (my gg grandfather) was a miner. I have been unable to learn much about their lives there in Crittenden. The most frustrating thing is that I have been unable to trace either James A. or Eleanor back to discover the names of their parents. Also, I have been unable to find out when Eleanor immigrated from Ireland -- or from which county in Ireland. If you happen upon any of these names in your research -- or can link me with descendants -- I'd very much appreciate hearing about it. Below I've included a chronology of James A. and Eleanor's appearances in various census records. Note that her first name changes frequently. Any clues that you happen to stumble upon would be appreciated. Thanks. Fran ELEANOR ALICE FITZSIMMONS CARDWELL and JAMES A. CARDWELL 1850: These Fitzsimmons in Union County as laborers in house of carpenter Isaac Clayton: Thomas 18, James 22, Mike 25, Thomas 30 (indexed online as FitzsSemmons and Semmons. 1850 Census Book 976-902 u58ho, Pg. 2 -- KHS). However, no Eleanor listed! At this time James A. Cardwell lives with first wife Lucy Jane Stallions and their infant son, James W. 1860: Eleanor lives with husband James A. Cardwell and 3 children (James W., Edmund, Warner Taylor) in Morganfield, Union Co., Ky. 1870: as "EA" with husband James A. Cardwell in CRITTENDEN COUNTY with 5 children (Edmund, Warner Taylor, M. Elizabeth, Annabelle, Catherine. A sixth child, Marguerite, arrives in 1872.) 1880: as "Alice" – head of household, living with Edmund (23), Anna (16), Marguerite (9) 1900: As "Ellen" Cardwell, age 66, b. Ireland, now widow, Hopkins County, living with daughters Elizabeth, Annabell, Catherine, Marguerite (b. 1871), grandson Robert, granddaughter Mary.
