    1. [KYMUHLEN] Sunday Afternoon Rocking
    2. From: jan, unicorn@sun-spot.com (j) Christmas Lives On (from the "Sunday Afternoon Rocking" series) Christmas Eve of 1884 was a memorable one for our family, but not for joyous reasons. On that snowy long ago Christmas Eve afternoon, my great grandfather was thrown from his horse, breaking his neck. So it was, this man in the prime of life left a young wife expecting the birth of their first child, my grandfather, within two months time. I have often thought, with such a legacy, it was amazing that my grandfather had such joyous feelings about Christmas, and that if he associated it with pain, he never gave hint of it. Instead he came in the door of his simple farmhouse stomping snow from his feet, cheeks flushed, laughing merrily, proudly holding out for inspection a round ball of cedar cut out on the farm. He built a roaring fire in the fireplace and stoked the potbellies and the great iron cookstove. His eyes twinkled as he teased me about the expected "midnight visitor". He enjoyed Christmas as much as anyone I ever knew. Later, the generation that made decisions would decide that "Christmas down home was just too much trouble", and perhaps had I been one of those who sweated over an iron cookstove, or brought in wood for the same, I would have decided the same. But as it was, Pa and I sat disconsolately in a corner together, ruing such a decision. Miserably we shook our heads, and moaned together, the eldest generation and the youngest…that "Christmas just was not Christmas if it was not down home." Yet…somehow it managed to come just the same. It came with a succession of changes, from "real" trees, to artificial ones not looking real at all…to shiny aluminum versions…to artificial ones looking so real one had to touch to be sure. But some things never changed. Always there was the Christmas custard, the coconut cake, the orange cake, the annual jar of pennies I have spoken of before…always there was the laughter and love of a family warming a house, whether a fireplace did so or not. It came just the same. Members left us, members arrived…Pa himself one Christmas was no longer there...but Christmas lived on. This year I dreaded more than any in recent memory. Two aunts we have given back to their Maker, and the memories were poignant. One had been the "hostess of family gatherings" for a good deal of my memory. Her warm presence, her ringing laughter is something once experienced, one will never forget. Another just last Christmas had looked at me joyfully, upon the occasion of hearing a Christmas carol, and grasped my hands in her frail ones exclaiming, "Oh! I feel Christmas in my bones!" And I dreaded this Christmas for the two sisters, aged 89 and 90 who were left, for one had already warned me…"there will be Christmas no more…no more." It was with dubious but hopeful planning that Mama and I packed two trees in my car, decorations…and headed the long miles to them. Would they stop my plans to bring Christmas to them? Would they not want a reminder of times before? And I realized…it was highly likely. We swept into their rooms and began…and I waited for the determined and stubborn "no's" that would tell me there would indeed be "Christmas no more". It never came. Instead I looked into two pair of eyes glowing, heard exclamations of delight. I saw them laughing at the singing Santa I brought them, and try to keep time to the music. I heard them anxiously making sure I would be back to share the season with them. And I saw upon their faces that Christmas would indeed live on. As it forever will…for Christmas is a spirit. An indomitable spirit that lives in the hearts of all who can feel. 2. Judy Tolbert
    3. Hi Linda, I wish I could help you with Lawraney/Lauraneyt/Lourany, Susana. I have seen her listed as a child of Ancel and Elizabeth Adcock in GENDEX, Jeff Murphy's murphy2gencom. However, in his notes his includes: "It is very likely that all the children I've attached to Ancel are not his. This has only been done for convenience in tracking them. I believe we are dealing with maybe two families. All this needs to be reviewed. jm" He lists a Joseph Adcock, Noah Adcock, Luraney Susannah Adcock, Archibald M. Adcock, Mary A. Adcock, James Adcock, Martha E. Adcock. The only information I have been able to find is in the 1850 Muhlenberg Co. Census which only lists Archibald, 20; Mary A., 15; James, 14; and Martha E., 12. Ancel and Elizabeth could have very well stopped in TN on their way to KY and Lawraney Susana Adcock born there and we have no proof. Which could also cover the other early children. I have no information on the ancestors of Ancel or Elizabeth. They do not seem to be related to the other Adcocks in KY and I have been on the Adcock Mail List for some time now and have found no one who connects. I have written to Bobby Anderson of Muhlenberg Co. who apparently knows a lot about the history of Muhlenberg Co. I thought if the Adcock Plantation, wagon and boat factory were destroyed during the Civil War he may have some information on it. I have not received an answer from him. I do not know how we can find an answer to this without going to Muhlenberg Co. and looking at wills and deeds, etc, to see if we can dig up some information. I am wondering if Ancel had another first name or middle name that was used in records. That happened to me with another ancestor I was looking for. All the records I had were in one name but finally found a deed that listed his whole name and then I found lots of information on him. Any suggestions? Thanks, Judy Tolbert Columbia, MO _____________________________________________________________________________________ Get more from the Web. FREE MSN Explorer download : http://explorer.msn.com

    1. ADCOCK, Lawraney/Lauraney/Lourany Susana
    2. Linda L. Clements
    3. Nothing like getting into the Adcock discussion late -- I've been occupied with professional activities and I'm just now catching up on my genealogical e-mail from October! I just (very belatedly) read with interest the discussion of the Ancel Adcock family by Judy Tolbert and Tamara Kincaide. One of my great grandfathers was Alvis S. TOOLEY (c. 1857 - 1922, KY). Shortly after I started my genealogical research -- in 1998 -- I visited the Muhlenberg County genealogical library, and I found from papers in the "Tooley" file that other researchers had Hall S. TOOLEY, (b. c.1821 in Logan Co, KY) and Lawraney/Loureney/Lourany Susana ADCOCK (b. 1823/24 TN, d. c. May 1898, in Muhlenberg Co.) listed as his parents. In turn, Lawraney/Lourany's parents were listed as Ancel ADCOCK (b. 1797 SC) and Elizabeth (b. 1801 NC), married Feb. 1842/43 in Muhlenberg Co. I was pretty naive when I first started this research, and didn't make notes of my sources -- nor of their sources -- so I have no idea what the original source of this information was, nor even who the researcher was who reported it. However, this information is also reported on page 273, column 1 center, and page 284, col. 1 top, in the book of amateur genealogies entitled "Muhlenberg County, Kentucky," Turner Publishing, Paducah, 1996. It would appear that this may be the same Ancel Adcock that Judy and Tamara were discussing, although based on their information I should list him as having been born in 1793 rather than 1797. Now I would like to know whether these really were the parents of Lawraney (sp?) Susana Adcock. I have no siblings listed for her. Since she married in 1843 she wouldn't have been listed at home in the 1850 census. However, she supposedly was born in TN, not KY like her potential siblings (from the 1850 census). Do any of you kind souls out there know anything about Lawreney Susana? 3. I am looking for information on John DOSS, son of Azariah DOSS, Sr. of the 1820 Muhlenberg census. My gg grandmother was Mary Ann DOSS, born 4/5/1826 in KY, but I don't know exactly where. She was the daughter of John DOSS and Jane Jameston. Along with Mary Ann, John and Jane DOSS had the following known children: Sarah D. (born 8/19/1828 in AL) Nancy S. (born 11/1/1831 in AL) George W. (born about 1837 in AL) Since John and Jane married in 1825 and moved to AL before 1830, they do not show on any KY census. I am trying to verify the parents of John DOSS. One source has given me that he was possibly the son of William DOSS and Isabella HEARD, but that connection seems a bit fuzzy. Through LDS records I found that Azariah DOSS, Sr. had a son John born about 1801, the right time frame. Does anyone know more about the family of Azariah DOSS and his son, John? Thanks for your help. Barry Fox Greenville, SC

    3. Judy, Just today I had a request for the burial location of ANSEL ADCOCK, from VICKY DEERING deer_buck@prodigy.net, I was unable to locate him in any cemetery,But as I explained there are many unmarked graves in Muhlenbergh Co Ky. Elizabeth his wife was located in WYATT CEMETERY with the Dec 1861 death,I also checked the history of Muhlenberg County by Otto Rothert and there was no mention of ANSEL. I did check the census for his children you mentioned, In 1870 census I did find 2 JAMES- 1 JOSEPH - 1 NOAH-1 ELVIS-1 THOMAS who were heads of household. There is also a ANSOLAM ADCOCK age 80 Ky living in the household of JAMES ARNDELL who is age 32 and his wife is MARTHA age 31. Could this be the daughter that you mentioned married a ARNOLD? >Martha E. married James C. Arnold and had ten children. In 1870 they had 7 children the oldest was JOHN C ARNDELL age 7 and the youngest was DAVID ARNDELL age 1. I have ARNDELL in my line who also have been referred to as ARNOLD in several documents census/marriages/births/deaths. I am not sure if JAMES above is part of my line,I will check. 3. Hi, I am looking for information on the Ancel Adcock family in Muhlenberg Co. In the 1850 Census they were listed as follows:Ancel Adcock, 57, farmer, SC; Elizabeth, 49, NC; Archibald, 20, KY; Mary A., 15, KY; James, 14, KY; and Martha E., 12, KY. Archibald married Rebecca Jane Goodnight in 1855. They had one son, Robert Walton Adcock b. 1856 who married Dona Bell Clark in 1864 and had nine children. Mary A. married William Jones in 1852 and had three children. James married Sarah C. Rose 1855 and had eight children. Martha E. married James C. Arnold and had ten children. I know Elizabeth is buried at the Wyatt Chapel Cemetery near Ebenezer, KY. She died in 1861. I have a family story that Ancel owned a 6000 acres plantation, a wagon and boat factory on Bear and Thompson Creek. This was all destroyed during the Civil War. Can someone tell me where Bear and Thompson Creek are or were in Muhlenberg Co? Is there any old stories documented about this? Could someone direct me to Civil War Records which might include details or mention of this destruction? Would appreciate any clues. Thank you.
