    1. [KYMUHLEN] MAPS of Muhlengberg County
    2. Richard Callard
    3. Early Location of properies in Muhlenberg County are based on the waterways. Are there Maps that one may get that will help place the families. When I was in Muhlenberg Co. I did get a map of the county but many of the waterways were unnamed and it was useless. Is there an AAA Auto Club that has such a map? The chamber of commerice? Does the County government have such a map for use by indiviuals? Local surveyors? Thank you, Richard Callard callard@dancris.net

    1. [KYMUHLEN] Rhoads #1
    2. Judy Purcell
    3. There is a LOT of data on the Rhoads family. It will take several postings to complete it. January 1800 Court Records Andrew Hunsaker was surveying a road from Smith's Ferry to Greenville. The road passed Jacob's Creek, thence to mouth of Mud River, to mouth of rocky Creek then to Solomon Penrod's, thence to Daniel Rhoads. Another road was being viewed from Billing's Ford on Mud River to Greenville. The viewers included Jacob Studebaker, Daniel Rhoads Sr., William Patton and Thomas Biggerstaff. December 1800 Court Records Elizabeth Rhoads, widow and executrix of the will of Joseph Rhoads, was summoned to court to give counter security for her executorship. Henry Rhoads, orphan of Joseph and being over 14, chose Henry Keith as his guardian. Matthew Adams was the security for Keith. Solomon Rhoads, William Smith and Henry Uncell record their stock marks. George Hunsaker was appointed guardian to John and Elizabeth Rhoads, orphans of Joseph Rhoads, deceased. Samuel Fuller furnished the bond. Court approved Andrew Hunsaker as guardian to Hannah Rhoads, orphan of Joseph Rhoads, deceased. Gilbert Vaught was appointed the guardian of Daniel and Catherine Rhoads, orphans of Joseph Rhoads, deceased. (From the above records, it seems that Joseph Rhoads left children, namely, Henry, John Elizabeth, Hannah Daniel and Catherine.) [Manley's comments] A record of 1801 names daughter Rachel, also. May 1811 Court Records Parmenius Redman was made deputy to Sheriff Solomon Rhoads Five Rhoads families, all formerly from Muhlenberg, were in Edgar Co., Il. The oldest member was Jacob Rhoads, age 62, and his wife, Elizabeth, who was formerly Elizabeth Ripple, native of PA, prior to removing to Muhlenberg. the other Rhoads families censured were perhaps son of this Jacob. They were Alney McLean Rhoads, wife Susannah and 5 children. The Malona family in Edgar Co., IL, was closely associated with the Rhoads. Daniel (or David) Rhoads was censused with wife, Sarah A. E., and 3 children. Daniel and David were written one over the other so I cannot state which was correct [Manley's comment]. Newman Rhoads, wife Rachel, and 5 children and Newman's mother, age 76, a native of Botetourt Court, VA. George Rhoads and his wife, Sarah A., both natives of Muhlenberg, were censused with 4 children. Vacant land acquired in 1850 B. W. Rhoads bought three acres for 4.5 cents

To Grady: 1850 census list of the elderly: Edmond Nanney, 61, VA Jan. 1806 County Court Records John Nanny records his stock mark as "a crop off left ear and upper half crop off the right ear". Feb. 1804 County Court Records Daniel Rhoads was constructing a road to the Logan Co. line. the following men were added to his crew: Samuel A. Grable, James Nanny, Abram Avy, William Pattn, Avery Wood, Jacob Studebaker, Samuel Penrod, Michael Ripple and Adam Billins. April 1804 The last will of Frederick Severs was proved by Henry Rhoads and Abraham Unsell. The executors were Solomon Rhoads and Jesse Jackson. the estate was appraised by Frederick and Abraham Unsell, Henry Rhoads, Sr. and William Smith. Michael Severs, orphan of Frederick, being over 14, chose Frederick Unsell his guardian; Gabriel Severs, orphan of Michale, chose Jacob Severs as his guardian; the court appointed Jacob Severs guardian for Juliana Severs as she was under 14.

    3. Before I transcribe this LONG letter by Rachel Harness Whitman Luce (wife of Matthew Roger Luce), I wanted to make sure someone would be interested. They were from Warrick Co., IN where they married in 1848. They moved to Texas and the letter describes their trip. Judy Penrod Purcell

    1. [KYMUHLEN] Luce
    2. Judy Purcell
    3. To Grady: 11 Feb 1954 by Edward Manley Abner Luce Sr. seemed to have been the emigrant of the Luce families and prior to migrating to Muhlenberg Co. before 1800, the residence seemed to have been Morristown, Morris Co., NJ, and earlier from Shelterberg Island, LI, NY. Abner Luce Sr. appears in the records of Muhlenberg as early as 1800 when the newly formed county exempts the elderly Abner from county levies. this usually was due to old age or being inform. William Luce, evidently a son of Abner Sr. appears in Muhlenberg records Feb 25, 1800 when his name is listed among others including Henry and Alexander Keath (Keith) where they were to mark out a road from Adam's Ferry to Greenville. Feb. 2, 1801, William Luce records his stockmark as "a crop of the left ear and a slit in the right." This same William Luce had several hundred acres patented in his name including all the land around Skilesville where the Muddy River empties into the Green River. The many lots where Skilesville was laid out were a part of the William Luce survey, evidently the original patent included acreage on both sides of Muddy River, the one side being in Logan County prior to the formation of Butler County in 1810. Benjamin Luce appears in the 1811 and 1813 tax lists of Butler County, part of the land had been patented in the name of David Luce. John Luce married Betsy McQuery in 1808 and Jacob Hunsaker married Mary (Polly) Luce in 1880, both marriages recorded in Muhlenberg. Later records include Isaac, Jacob and Jonathon N. Luce. David was appointed constable in 1807, resigning the same year, and in 1810 his excellency, the Governor of KY, appointed David Luce a justice of the peace. This David was a private in the Company of Capt. Alney McLean, from Muhlenberg, 1812. Very early when the migrations were heading for the newly opened Indiana, David Luce, son of Abner Sr., removed his family to Warrick Co., IN, including David's son, Abner, named for his grandfather. Abner Luce Sr., and is wife Mehettable, joined son David and the many Muhlenbergers going into IN, including Daniel and Betsy (Coates) Hunt, Keath (Keith), Hunsaker, Miller and other families. Abner Sr. died in 1818 and Mehettable in 1836, both buried in the Baker Creek Baptist Church graveyard in Spencer Co., IN. these dates copied from their headstones. David Luce's son, Abner, laid out the town of Newburgh, IN in 1829, on the Ohio River and was a prosperous merchant there, also postmaster until 1849 when he and his family moved to Seguin, TX via the Ohio, Mississippi, and Red rivers, then proceeding by wagon-train.

    3. To Grady: 1800 County Court Records Another road was being laid out from Adam's Ferry to the Green River to Greenville. Henry Keith, Alexander Keith and William Luce were the viewers. 1810 County Court Records David Luce to survey a road from the abuttment of the Butler County road to Solomon Rhoads as it leads to Greenville 1811 County Court Records David Luce and Jesse Jackson were recommended to the governor as justices of the peace in place of Solomon Rhoads. 1812 County Court Records David Luce, esquire, produced a commission from the governor bearing the date 23 Jul 1811 appointing him justice of the peace in and for the County of Muhlenberg, who thereupon took the oath to support the Constitution of the United States, the oath of fidelity to the commonwealth and also the oath of office. William Luce was surveying a road. (This William Luce is buried at Old Midway Church Cemetery outside of Rochester in Butler County. William owned land at Skilesville on both sides of Muddy River as early as 1800.) William Luce, a very early pioneer had a land grant that embraced all of Skilesville. Skilesville was called "Model Mills" in the 1860 census. Richard Simmons married Nancy Elizabeth Luce, daughter of William and Anne (Greene) Luce and granddaughter of Abner and Mehetabel (Hallock) Luce and great-granddaughter of Eleazer Luce. Nancy Luce's father, William, owned all the land that embraced Skilesville as early as 1800. Richard H. and Nancy Elizabeth (Luce) Simmons were the parents of Mary Ann, Duff Greene, Jonathan Luce, Richard H. Jr., Nancy Isabella, and John Wesley Simmons.

    1. [KYMUHLEN] 1812 War Letter: Luce, Carter, Everton, Rhoades
    2. Judy Purcell
    3. 18 Feb 1954 by Edward Manley: I have been able to obtain an old letter written during the War of 1812, by Samuel Luce, an early youth of Muhlenberg, a son of David and Elizabeth (Carter) Luce. David was an early justice of the peace and son of pioneer Abner Luce and his wife Mehetable (Hallock) Luce. Abner originally was from Suffolk County, Long Island, NY, the move to Morris County, NJ, and long before 1800 to Nelson County, KY where he removed to the Skilesville section of Muhlenberg before 1800. The soldier-writer of the following letter died the same year (1815) at Natchez, MS during the very bad epidemic of measles contracted during the war. I have been granted full consent for the Times-Argus-Messenger to publish this rare letter in the original spelling and capitalization. Punctuation and paragraphing have been added. The letter follows. "January the 19th day, 1815. Respective father and mother, after Best Respects to you I will tell you in short manner of my health & situation. 1. [KYMUHLEN] Walter Bridges
    2. Dawnene B Young
    3. I'm trying to figure out a Bridges puzzle, concerning this line of Bridges: James S. Bridges, born 1893 in Providence, KY; (married Rosetta Johnson) William H. Bridges, born 1861 in Livingston County, KY; (married Virginia Bruce) John R. Bridges, born 1835 in Livingston County, KY; (married Mary J. Hood) John H. Bridges, born 1812 in KY; (married Lucretia ----------------) probably John Bridges, who married Mary Miller in 1810 in Livingston County, KY This is where the line is in question. On the Livingston County tax rolls, John Bridges claims land in 1812, citing 200 acres in Christian County, patented under the name of Walter Bridges. Walter received a land grant for 200 acres on the East Fork of the Pond River in 1799. Before that, he is on the tax rolls for 1786 (?), and one other year, in Logan County, KY. Walter died in 1806 in Christian County. His widow, Mary Scott Bridges, died in 1809/1810, and her estate was handled by relatives John Scott, and Benjamin Hardin. They leave at least 3 sons: John, William, and Alney/Abney. (Christian County Court records - John Hardin is given guardianship of Alney Bridges, orphan of Walter Bridges). Now -- are my John Bridges of Livingston County the descendants of Walter? I have always thought so, from the tax records. They remain on the tax records from 1806-1860. As for the census records: they are there in 1810 and 1820, 1840 and 1850. Supposedly, they are not there in 1830. However, I have not checked the entire Livingston rolls to be sure. They are also not listed in 1840, but I found this to be an error -- they were listed as living in Smithland in Lincoln county, but I pulled the rolls for Smithland in Livingston County, and there they were. BUT - many of the Scott and Hardin families moved to Arkansas. There is a John Bridges and Cynthia Spivey Bridges buried there along with the Scotts and Hardins. This has been assumed to be Walter's son. If so, who is my John who seems to be remaining in Livingston County, who claimed Walter's land? And what eventually happened to Walter's land? What happened to William? Alney/Abney ends up in Mississippi with a John Hardin; Alney died there in the 1850's. The Scotts and Hardins came to Livingston County via Rowan and Rutherford Counties in NC. There are Benjamin and Moses Bridges names close to their land there. However, I've never heard of a Walter there, and there are no marriage/family records which include him. To further compicate things: 2 of the children of Charles Miller, son of Ebenezer Miller, marry Bridges in Livingston County. Charles Miller's wife is Jane Calhoun of Abbeville, SC. The Thomas/Bridges family history also includes Calhouns. Does anyone have any ideas about Walter Bridges, or my Johns? Thanks much. Dawnene Bridges Young

Gates James M. Shutt to Matilda C. Bivin Miltilda Shutt to Russell Williams William Riley Shutt to Martha Elizabeth Edwards, 1866 Minerva J. Shutt to Seth Beasley [don't know why dates are missing on some] quoting Manley: "I understand William Raymond Shutt of Beech Creek is a son of Leander Shutt and his wife Sarah Hunt. Leander was a son of Benjamin Shutt and wife, Lurana Gates, and Benjamin Shutt was a son of John Shutt, and wife, Elizabeth Groves. While doing research in Muhlenberg County in 1951, I was standing at the crossroads at Ebenezer when Raymond Shutt gave me a lift to Greenville. He mentioned his mother was a Hunt, the family I was doing research on, and she descends from the pioneer John Hunt, who settled Hunt Settlement. If I have it correctly, Sarah Hunt was a daughter of Henry Hunt, son of Joseph, son of Jonathan, son of pioneer John Hunt and wife, Charity (Hunt) Hunt."

    3. I sent an e-mail to Judy Purcell in response to her kind offer to look up information in the index of newspaper articles written by Edward Manley in the1950s about families in Muhlenberg Co. After doing so it occured to me that I haven't bugged anyone on the list for a while about the information I'm looking for, so I'm sending this off to you all..... In chasing my ancestors I am tracing a maize of families in Muhlenberg County. I have pinned down most of them during the time they were in Muhlenberg County, but would love it if there were any information on their origins.... My mother was Louella TOOLEY Miller Clements, Feb. 18, 1908 Stringtown - June 28, 1994, Phoenix, AZ. Her parents were Charles Minton TOOLEY, Dec. 24, 1884 Muh. -March 17, 1959 Muh.Co., KY, and Emma Jane WARMAN, March 13, 1890 Clarksville, TN - March 21,1926 Stringtown. The WARMANs are one of my mysteries. My grandmother Emma was born in Tennessee, and I have traced the family of her mother -- Pherbia Armpster HIGHERS -- back quite a ways in TN. However, Emma's father, Thomas Marion WARMAN, July 16,1852 (TN?) - Dec. 24,1924, Muh., lived in Smith County, TN, before coming to Stringtown, but I now believe that it is possible that before that the WARMANs may have come from Kentucky -- though probably not Muhlenberg County -- to TN before "returning" to KY. Any information you can find about the surname WARMAN would be greatly appreciated. On my grandfather's side, Mint's parents were Alvis S. TOOLEY, Oct. 26, 1857 KY - Mar. 10, 1922 Stringtown, and Matilda Carline GREENWOOD, c1860 KY Muh. - Jan. 6, 1917 Muh., KY. Alvis was the son of Hall S. TOOLEY, c1821 Logan Co KY - ?? Muh??, and Lawraney Susana ADCOCK, c1823 TN - Apr/May 1898 Muh. I am trying to verify the parentage of Lawraney -- we have Ancel ADCOCK b.1797 SC and Elizabeth ?, b. 1801 NC. There is also a real mystery about who Hall's parents were --- John TOOLEY and Elizabeth SHELTON or James TOOLEY and Sarah JOHNSON, but that is unlikely to be decided by Muhlenberg County information. Nonetheless, any further information on ADCOCKs or TOOLEYs would also be appreciated. Matilda Carline GREENWOOD was the daughter of William Henry GREENWOOD, c1839 VA or NC - ?? Muh?? and Susan L. DUKES, Nov. 17, 1841 Muh. - 1900 Muh. Susan was the daughter of Elijah DUKES and Edna MOORE, and their families are well documented in Muhlenberg County. However, any information on William's death date would be greatly appreciated. I am also trying to learn anything I can about the family of my mother's first husband, Garrett Ford MILLER, c. 1904 Muh?? - c1940 Phoenix. I had much more information on Garrrett and his family before most of our house -- including all of my family history that I had collected since I was 10 years old -- was washed away in a flood here in northern Nevada in January 1997. (I haven't been back to Phoenix since the flood -- at least there I could read his birth and death dates off his tombstone!) I was fortunate that a rancher found much of my mother's history 4 miles downriver, but most of Garrett's information was absent. I have been in touch with some of his remaining family in Muhlenberg County, but they have no more information than I have. 3. In 1799, Walter Bridges received 200 acres of land on the East Fork of the Pond River in Christian county. He died in Christian county in 1806. I am trying to learn what happened to this land (in an effort to tie other Bridges names to his). Walter's wife was Mary Scott, daughter of John Scott. They had at least 3 boys: John, William, and Abney/Alney. The problem is that every Bridges had a son named John. I'm trying to learn which John/William got the land, if they sold it, where they went, etc. Any help in discerning what happened to that land would be greatly appreciated. Thanks much. Dawnene Young
