Lile/Lyle ( I have seen it both ways).....My grandfather was named after his mother.....AMANDA Marcellus Lile/Lyle....( reminds me of the song " a Boy Named Sue".....poor guy.....needless to say he never went by it..)... What was Velmas fathers name?.....I do have some files charts that I got from Carol Brown.....if they were related it might be on there..... Isn't "genealogy" interesting...:>)... Margaret

    2. I was born in Louisville....:>)..1944...... Both my parents were born in KY....Mom was Muhlenberg co...Greenville......and dad was born in Webster Co., Providence...... My father moved us up here ( Michigan) in 1949....... My names from the area are......Lile/Lyle/Crunk/Dukes/Reed/Lee/Groves/and a few more....:>)... Usually the head of household is listed.....seeing that is the most important one.....if you put in a certain first name with the last name that is probably the only one you get but if you put in the last name they usually have the families......BUT then it isn't always like that.... I really like ancestry but they do NOT have everyone on file from the census..I wish they did.....also they do make mistakes. I have found a few..... I would think for what you pay they woud be better in some areas...... I do hope that I have been helpful...... Have a great day...:>). Margaret

    2. Well that is a new one on me. I did not know that a sheet is several pages long. That explains why I saw some page numbers on one page, but when I went to the next page there were none. I was really getting confused. Well there you go, it just proves you never stop learning. Thanks ! God Bless Pam

    1. Re: [KYMUHLEN] Question on Census
    2. Thanks for th help again, I found the names but unfortuneatly they are not who I am looking for. But that does not mean they might be related somewhere down the line. I was hoping to find him as a child age 2 in the 1870 Census. When you do a look up for a Census does it always give the head of household? Or all the names listed as you put in the search? God Bless Pam

    2. I have names from the 1870 Census with the county Muhlenberg and Location 1 is S. Carrollton Prec. 1 and the other is Court House Prec. 3 and Page Number. How are we supposed to find anyone when there is no page number. There are 322 pages and I need page 429 and page 478. I understand when it is copied it is supposed to be stamped with ancestry.com stamp of page numbers. Now what? God Bless Pam

    2. Hi Ernie, My dad chewed and smoked till he was 88 yrs. when he passed away. He was born in Muhlenberg and his dad and brother were both killed in the undergrounds around Luzerne/Graham. After losing both of them, he left KY at about 17 yrs. of age, deciding he hated the mines. However, I'm sure his habit started in KY since apparently most miners did chew and/or smoke. He did return many years later and worked for Peabody in the strip mines. I went down one time in one of the few remaining undergrounds with a friend just to see one. After that experience - I decided one might do anything to keep their sanity day after day! L. Livers Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio Searcher Researching: LOSTUTTER, WILKEY/WHELCHEL, DREW, OVERTON

    2. Hi Ernie, if you put in "Five Brothers tobacco" in Google it tells you how strong it was. You wonder why anyone would want to chew or smoke it. My Dad chewed in the mines but I don't know his brand. My Doss ancestors were in Muhlenberg Co also. Then my Granddad and a couple of his brothers went to WV to work in the mines there. The people in Muhlenberg Co are so helpful. Anna

    2. Thanks! I was in Google when I got your note. Thanks again for the answer to the source of Five Bros. Coiincindence too that Finzer came from Switzerland. Our family probably originated there too although we've always been considered "German." The whole family existing in about 1800 settled in Muhlenberg and vicinity. I wonder how my Dad decided on Five Bros. I credit it with convincing me not to smoke. It made me sick as a boy. Ernie

    1. [KYMUHLEN] Five Brothers Chewin' & Pipe-smokin' Tobacco
    2. Anyone remember Five Brothers? Is it still sold in Ky.? Maybe. My Dad chewed it in the mines in the'30s to the '50s and smoked it in his pipe outside the mines. It probably killed him with cancer. No Black Lung for him. He worked in Muhlenberg and Perry, plus others. Ernie Heltsley

    1. Re: [KYMUHLEN] (no subject)
    2. Hi Ernie I went to Google search engine and found out that it was put out by John Finzer and Bros. The Co. was founded in 1866. Finzer and his family migrated from Switzerland and for several years they were the largest tobacco co. in Louisville KY. It was eventually sold and became part of the American Tobacco Co. in 1901. Go to Google Search engine and put in John Finzer and Bros and there are several things pertaining to them. Hope this will help.
