    1. Re: [KYMUHLEN] Dukes and Groves.
    2. Thanks Kim..... I will check out the Groves.....I need to start somewhere on them..... I have a picture of Amanda Jane that died in 1818 and also a picture of her head stone.......she is buried in the same cemetery as my grandfather, Amanda Marcellus Lile... My grandfather died at my aunts in 1962 in Indiana but wanted to be buried where his mother was.......Dukes/King Cemetery...... If anyone would like a copy of these pictures I would gladly send them....:> )... I don't recall off hand the relationship between this Amanda J or Charity but I think I have it somewhere in my files....... Margaret

    1. [KYMUHLEN] Dukes and Groves.
    2. Kim
    3. Hi All, I dont really do genealogy anymore, but still read the posts. I just wanted to get my two cents (def. not sense) in. Dukes family: John H. and Josiah W. were the children of Josiah and Nancy (Moore) Dukes. Josiah W. m. first Charity A. Moore (Nov 3 1851) then Amanda Jane Moore(Apr 17 1884). Amanda was married first to John H. Dukes(Jan 17 1855), then his brother Josiah W. Amanda was born Apr 24 1836 died Dec 9 1918. Josiah b. Mar 31 1832 died Feb 25 1908. Charity A. Moore born July 22 1825 died Mar 29 1881 John b. ca 1837 no date of death but I was verbally told he died in the civil war. I don't know if this is true or not. I don't know what the relationship is between Amanda and Charity. According to my records Josiah and Charity had the following children: Amanda J. Josephine Samuel H. Nancy A. Susan M. John H. and Amanda had: Calvin Francis M. (Male) Wilmon (male) Malissa Jane (my line) George W. John A. Groves family: Dont know if this helps but I have an Isaac and Franke Groves with the children Rachel (b. ca 1857) Isaac (b. ca 1862) and Sherman (b. ca 1867) I don't have more than this on this line it is not my direct line and I never tried to follow it. 2. Margaret, you're right about the abundance of Dukes in western Ky. My Heltsley ancestors are related to a bunch of them but I wouldn't get to carried away about the royalty. I'm not. Ha! Ernie Heltsley

    3. Margaret, I read your post with interest. I noticed your gr gm's maiden name was Groves. Do you happen to have an Elizabeth Groves b. 1826 KY. She is my gg gm. Could be Muhlenberg. She died 1890 neighboring in Hopkins CO. She was married to William Henderson Buntin in 1842 Hopkins CO. I am looking for her family and have been for 30 years. 2. This is really great...:>).....They say that you can throw a rock in Muhlenberg Co and hit a cousin...lol........I believe it...... My mom was born and raised in Greenville...... My grandfather, Marcellus, married a first cousin the first time.....Lillie Dukes...I have a copy of their marriage license.....Lillie was the daughter of William F. Dukes..( something Carol Brown sent had the middle name as Jackson.????...) and Mary Francis Wells.......the license has F tho..... I was just looking at William and Mary's marriage license and it has that his father was born in TN....and her mother, Wells, was born in Christian Co......... That first marriage of my grandfathers produced one daughter and ended in a divorce.....his second marriage was to my grandmother, Rebecca Elizabeth Lee...( her mothers maiden name was Groves)... This is such a small world.......I have lived in Michigan since I was 4 years old and never got to know any of my relations.....so sad.... You tell your hubby that his cuz in mid-Michigan says hello....:>)...... I see that the Dukes married a lot of Mores.......and a few Wells...... Did you know that the Dukes line goes back to Edward 1.......king of England?......also looks like Joan of Arc also..... If you would like I can send you copies of what Carol Brown sent me....it is very interesting.......I believe that she has it down right because this is her line of work at the Muhlenberg Annex......library.... It has been great...:>).... Margaret

    2. I believe your grandmother Charity Dukes and my husbands grandfather Benjamin Franklin Dukes had the same grandfather who was Josiah Dukes that married Nancy Moore who no doubt is the one your grandmother was named for. Dot

    1. Re: [KYMUHLEN] Question on Census
    2. I just got the matter straight, Josiah Jr. Dukes was married to Charity Moore so that is your line. Josiah Jr. was a brother to David M. Dukes who was the grandfather of Velma Dukes. So we do have the same line. Its a good family. Dot

    2. I show a Nancy Jane Dukes that married James Owen. I also show that John H.Dukes married Amanda Moore. I do not show Amanda as a daughter of Josiah Dukes, could it be that there were two Josiah Dukes? I came to Greenville to teach my first school and married Howard Harkins, son of Howard T. Harkins and Velma Dukes. My mother Harkins (Velma Dukes) was one of the most wonderful women I have ever known. She could do everything so well, and her family were all quite respected as leaders in the community and church. Sincerely, Dot
